Postcard 4 to Joseph and Family
Dear Joseph (and everyone in the Alipranti Family),
After Ephesus, Mr. Mike and I visited the northwestern part of Turkey. There used to be a city there called Troy. Legend has it that during a war between Troy and Sparta (now in Greece), soldiers from Sparta hid inside a giant wooden horse which they gave to Troy as a gift. When the Trojans let the horse past the city wall and into the city, the Greek soldiers jumped out and attacked the city.
I do not know if the legend is true, but they made a movie called Troy, and in it they used the giant wooden horse in the first photo and then left it in Turkey (a sort of modern-day Trojan horse from Hollywood).
We also visited Gallipoli where thousands of Australian, New Zealand and Turkish soldiers died during World War I. Mom and Dad can explain what World War I was. The second photo shows one of the memorials to these men. I think a better memorial than granite and marble would be if wise leaders followed the lessons of history to avoid war except as a last resort to prevent even greater calamities. Some wars are necessary, but sadly, the battle of Gallipoli was an unnecessary battle in which 10,000s young boys were killed for nothing.
The town we stayed in is on the waterfront and is very peaceful. We sat by the water and sipped tea and watched the fisherman catch fish. The third photo shows this.
Please share this email postcard with the rest of your family by having Monica or Thomas read it to all of you. I will address my next email postcard to Monica.
