Postcard 3 to Francis and Family
Dear Francis (and everyone in the Alipranti Family),
After we sailed for a week, Grandpa flew home and Mr. Mike and I visited some other parts of Turkey.
The most interesting place we visited was the ancient city of Ephesus. It is more than 3,000 years old. Under the Roman Empire, Ephesus was the capital of Asia and one of the largest cities in the Empire with over 200,000 people living there. Ephesus is also mentioned in the Bible. It is mentioned in Acts as the place where Paul came and preached for many years and likely wrote parts of his Testament. And Ephesus is mentioned in Revelation, which was written by John of Patmos, who spent time in Ephesus and probably died and was buried there. Patmos is an island nearby where he wrote Revelation, but we did not get to visit it.
There are many buildings in Ephesus, including a large theater where Paul preached. The first photo shows the theater.
The most famous building in Ephesus is the Library of Celsus. The second photo shows what remains of the library. It was one of the largest libraries in the ancient world, with more than 12,000 scrolls.
My favorite building, however, contains the public toilets. In the third photo, Mr. Mike tries one out.
Hats off to you, Mr. Mike!
Even thousands of years ago, Ephesus had underground pipes for running water and for sewage. I think that is amazing!
Please share this email postcard with the rest of your family by reading it to them, or if you can't, then ask Monica or Thomas to read it for you. I will send my next email postcard to Joseph.
