February 22, 2007 2006 Year in Photos

Greetings from Pousada dos Duendes in the tiny town of Lenis in the northeastern interior of Brazil (about 420 kilometers west of Salvador ). After five days in Rio and nearly a week in Salvador, Mike and I badly needed a break from the big city and noise and crowds of Carnaval. Hence Lenis and nearby Chapada Diamantina National Park.

Today was the most exciting day so far. We zip-lined off a 75-foot waterfall, explored 2 kilometers into a humongous, undeveloped cave (i.e., no lights, stairs, etc.), and climbed to the top of sandstone butte named Pai Inacio. And to top it all off, I learned I am an uncle for the 7th time. My sister gave birth yesterday to her SEVENTH child, Therese Bernadette Alipranti, pictured with her proud (and fecund) father.

So an update on Brazil is forthcoming (you can get a sneak preview at Mike's website) and the links above, but as a housekeeping matter, I have to get the 2006 Year In Photos out the door thats THIS email. 2006 was a wonderful year as they go. Highlights include:

  • 8 trips to California, 7 of which included visits with my nieces and nephews
  • My Nanas 90th Birthday party in San Francisco (January)
  • 2 camping trips in August (Santa Cruz and Oregon)
  • Home for the holidays in December
  • Fun trips to DC, Boston, Miami, North Carolina, Texas, Vegas and the Pacific northwest, but 2006 is the first year in while that I did not leave the North American continent.

Enough words! Here are the photos from 2006. . . .

January
  New Year, Late Christmas, Nana's 90th birthday . . . .

The New Year began with friends along the rainy California coast near San Luis Obispo. From there, I drove south to visit my 6 nieces and nephews. We then all headed north to San Francisco to celebrate my Nanas 90th birthday party, which included a private screening of a 90- year retrospective on her life at a private theater designed by George Lucas.

February
Boston, indie film shoot, several goodbyes . . . .

In February, I visited my friend Faren in freezing Boston and volunteered for a very bit part in an independent film about a midget. (Shooting started at 6 AM in a freezing park in Brooklyn, while of course I was living in New Jersey.) I also said goodbye to my flatmate John and two good friends at work, Ben and Jen.

March
Miami, North Carolina, Austin, more goodbyes . . . .

In March, I visited Miami with Heidi and Tivie, saw my dad's cousin Diane in North Carolina, and fell in love with Austin, Texas. Also, several more friends left the firm.

April
California, deposition, airshow, goodbye to Kalyani and Joe . . . .

In April, I made another trip to California for a deposition and got some time with the Cronies and family, which included an air show with my nieces and nephews. Kalyani left New York for Oregon (another one moves to Oregon!). My friend Joe left the firm (for the second time).

May
Washington DC, Sophia visits, Frying Pan, deposition . . . .

In May, I visited my friend Sophia in Washington DC and we ran a 6K to raise money to find a cure for brain tumors. (Thank you all who contributed!) She along with some of her family members visited me a couple of weeks later in NYC and we did the Grand Tour. As the weather warmed, evenings at the Frying Pan became common. And who, but me, takes photos on deposition junkets, including opposing counsel? :-)

June and July
  Las Vegas, California, Sally's 80th birthday, goodbye Chris, NYC fireworks . . . .

June and July were pretty mellow, at least photographically speaking. I visited Heidi and Tivie in Las Vegas and saw my family in California, where we celebrated the 80th birthday of my Nana's cousin Sally. In NYC, we said goodbye to my friend Chris (who moved to Hong Kong) and watched the July Fourth fireworks with my friend Estelle.

August (Part 1 of 2)
San Diego, Temecula, Legoland, camping, Santa Cruz, Bay Area and family . . . .

August was so full, I had to divide it into two parts. I went west to visit my nieces and nephews, and my friend Heidi joined us with Tivie at the beach near San Diego, Old Town Temecula, and Legoland. My sister and I then took the kids north to the Bay Area where we visited relatives, camped for a few nights near Santa Cruz, and of course hit the rides at the Boardwalk.

August (Part 2 of 2)
  Oregon camping trip . . . .

I continued north to Oregon for a camping trip with some two dozen friends, friends of friends, and their children. The friends came from all phases of my life: my childhood friends Bob and Patrick, my friend Gillian from my year in Australia, Tami from my time at Genentech, and Kalyani from Stanford Law School and New York, among others. The weather was perfect, the food plentiful and lake was absolutely beautiful.

September
Erica and Russ wed, birthday party at Frying Pan, 9-11 anniversary, Jason visits, California trip . . . .

September was busy. My friends Erica and Russ were married. Then I had my birthday party at the Frying Pan in NYC. My friend Somer graciously performed. New York City and the world recognized the 5-year anniversary of 9-11 with the reading of the names of each of the victims. My brother visited me in NYC. And I returned to California for another deposition, which gave me some time with my Cronies and family. (Notice a pattern?)

October
Apple picking, "Halloween" deposition, Halloween with neices and nephews . . . .

October was fantastic. The weather in NYC remained perfect for apple picking or just going for walks. I went to California for a deposition on the Saturday before Halloween, so I showed up to the deposition in costume. Following a familiar pattern, I stayed over in California and went trick-or-treating with my nieces and nephews.

November
Hanging out with friends in New York, including Thanksgiving at Sonya's . . . .

In November, I hung out with friends in New York, from the lighting of the tree in Rockefeller Center to Thanksgiving at my friend Sonyas place. For a change, I did NOT visit California.

December (Part 1 of 2)
Charity events, Larry and Betty wed, Cengiz's and James's parties, Dad visits . . . .

December included a couple of charity events (Teddy Bears for Tots and the Legal Aid Society holiday party for homeless children). My good friends and sailing companions Larry and Betty got married in St. Thomas. That same weekend, my dad visited me in New York, where dragged him to several holiday parties and museums.

December (Part 2 of 2)
  Home for the holidays . . . .

In late December, I returned home to the Bay Area to visit the Cronies and celebrate Christmas with my family. Then it was off to southern California to celebrate a second Christmas with my nieces and nephews.
