Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Dear Jeffrey,
I wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving and the continued blessings of family and friends. Our gratitude for these and the freedom to enjoy them are what this holiday is truly about. And eating like a pig too!

I'm back with the second issue of my newsletter. It now has a new (well, actually old) name -- Cronies Review -- but still the same old crappy content. (See the Q&A below for an explanation of the name.)

In this issue:

  • The View From New York: Blue City
  • Photo Journal: Campaigning and Cronies in Oregon
  • Upcoming Journeys: Sailing
  • Cronies Review Q&A
  • Holiday Plans
  • Some Helpful Links

So click on the photos and links, pretend to read the stories, provide feedback, and most importantly, keep in touch....

Warm regards, Jeff

P.S. If you missed Issue No. 1, it is available in the Archive.

The View From New York: Blue City
by Jeff Jordan New York Blue and Proud
I am relieved that the election is over. I had predicted in my Open Letter to Undecided Ohioans that it would come down to Ohio, and sure enough, it did. Still, there is something about certainty, regardless of the result, that allows one to move onto the next big thing. Certainly the process this time was much better than in 2000 (which was marred, ultimately, by the intellectually unsound U.S. Supreme Court decision that decided it, and which very few Americans actually read). So I accept the results this time and am ready to move on. Hail to the Chief!

My fellow New Yorkers, on the hand, are still trying to get over their bewilderment and grief. I see it in the faces of people, I overhear it on the street. Even people I hardly know say to me "we lost," making the numerically justified assumption that I am a Democrat because I am a New Yorker.

Despite the attacks of 9-11 (or perhaps because of them), more than 80% of Manhattanites voted for John Kerry. Some op-eds have wondered aloud whether people in the "red" states (where the chances of a terrorist attack are quite slim) voted the way they did because they simply don't care about New York's safety. Others, as exemplified by the British newspaper headline "How could 59,239,776 people be so dumb?" attributed the result to ignorance. In the throes of grief, these are seductive theories indeed. But I cannot let myself believe the former, and as for the latter, the exit polls for Ohio and for the entire nation simply do not support this theory (to the extent education level is correlated with intelligence) -- educated and less educated people split their votes pretty evenly. In short, a lot of smart, caring people voted for George Bush.

So what is it that has New Yorkers feeling so "blue" and so unlike the rest of America? I think, first, it is . . . . [Read on] [Comments]

Photo Journal: Campaigning and Cronies in Oregon
by Jeff Jordan
For the week leading up to Election 2004, including the Election Eve, I had the privilege of working with some great folks on voter protection issues in Eugene, Oregon and a bit in nearby Corvallis. While out there, I surprised my friend Patrick for his birthday. Several other Cronies from Portland and the Bay Area also dropped in to surprise him, along with his wife Shula, his mother and stepfather, and Tami and Phil (who totally coincidently live a block away).

The most vivid images from the trip were the fall colors, especially on the street between Patrick/Shula' house and Tami/Phil's house, and trick- or-treating with Griffin, . . . and of course the Kerry/Edwards signs on all the lawns (at least in Eugene).

Thanks to everyone who made the visit enjoyable, especially Patrick and Shula and the fine people at CarryOregon.

Upcoming Journeys: Sailing
Just a reminder that we are still trying to organize one or more sailing trips to the BVI or Belize over New Year's, and the Grenadines and/or Tahiti in late February. In each case, we would hope to fill a single boat with 5-8 people.

This should not compete with the sailing trip already planned by the Manhattan Sailing Club, which I went on last year and HIGHLY recommend, especially if you've never been to the BVI. Some friends and I would simply like to try someplace new (although I'm getting some pressure to go to the BVI again -- tough life!).

Click here for photos from last year's BVI regatta to whet your interest.

Cronies Review Q&A
Q: Why is your newsletter called the Cronies Review? A: This is the name of an old newsletter I and some friends published and distributed by mail in the 1990s (the older version had a "The" in the title). The "Cronies" were the friends and family who received the newsletter. While it is a word that is often used pejoratively, it literally means longtime close friends or companions, likely derived from Greek "khronios" meaning long lasting.

Q: What is the purpose of this newsletter? A: I'm fascinated by the use of technology to keep people connected. I also like to dabble in writing, photograghy, and fun (travel, etc.). This seemed like the perfect experiment to combine all of these interests. The Cronies Review will contain random topics such as reports on gatherings, travel, politics, photography, the arts, and New York perspectives.

Q: Can I unsubscribe? A: Yes, there's a button up top, but I'll get an email notification and track you down to ask why.

Q: Can anyone contribute to the newsletter? A: If you are interested, especially if it relates to one of the above topics, yes, please contact me with your proposal. Next month I am going to try to get a friend to write about being a Wyoming Republican in New York City. Should be interesting.

Q: I can't see any photo images in this email. What's up? A: It's most likely your email set-up. For HOTMAIL, click "Not Junk" to move it to your in-box or click one of the "Show Images" buttons at the top of the screen. For YAHOO, click "Show HTML Graphics" at the bottom of the screen and consider clicking "Edit Preferences" and reducing the Image Blocking on your Spam Protection menu. For GMAIL, click "Display External Images" at the top of the screen.

Q: Can I get back copies of the newsletter? A: Yes, I am placing them in an Archive, although many of the links will probably stop working in time.

Holiday Plans
For Thanksgiving, I will be hosting a family gathering in San Diego from 11/23 to 11/28. The family will be spending time at a rented house on the beach, so if you are in the neighborhood, please stop on by. It is sure to be fun with my sister's SIX children. [See my public calendar.]

For Christmas, I expect to be in the Bay Area, with perhaps a stop in Southern California on the way. Again, I would love to meet up with old friends.

For New Year's, I hope to be on a beach or sailboat somewhere warm, but I am still open to ideas....
