Don't Unsubscribe Yet!
Greetings!
Welcome to the first edition of my new on-line newsletter. This is essentially a fancy group email to my family and friends, so please don't unsubscribe. You are receiving this for a reason!!!

The newsletter will incorporate my photo albums, calendar (nothing there right now), updates on friends and different alumni groups, travel and events (such as Caribbean sailing excursions, political gatherings, parties, etc.), and a new political blog, where you and I can discuss the issues and politics of the 2004 Election and beyond. I will also deliver my end-of-year photo wrap-up via this newsletter.

I encourage you not only to contribute stories and photos, but also to visit my political blog to discuss issues with me and respond to my views. I actually enjoy the give and take. The focus of the next 10 days will be the 2004 Election, but after November 2, I promise to tone it down. So if you hate politics, please bear with me for the next 10 days.

So in this edition:

  • Political Blog - Election 2004 Best Websites
  • Debate Parties in New York City
  • SAIS Bologna Alums Gather in Washington DC
  • The New York Sailing Season Ends
  • Adrienne Granger pays a visit to the Big Apple
  • Stanford Law School News - Reunion Underway; Carlos Watson

Thanks for staying tuned, Jeff

Political Blog - Election 2004 Best Websites
by Jeff Jordan
Some of my favorite (nonpartisan) Election 2004 websites:

For objective reporting on the rhetoric of both sides in the Presidential race is http://factcheck.org . Another that I have heard is good is http://spinsanity.com, but I have no personal experience with them, and they do admit to being former progressives.

A fabulous issues site can be found at http://www.publicagenda.org/issues/issuehome. cfm.

For state-by-state polls (since we know it will come down to the battleground states), this site has a decent electoral map at http://www.realcle arpolitics.com/Presidential_04/RCP_Electoral_Count_Ch art.html and summarizes all the latest polls in all the battleground states: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/bush_vs _kerry _sbys.html.

For a nearly complete list of US political sites, visit http://www.nytimes.com/ref/politics/POLI_NAVI .html.

I would be interested if anyone else can recommend any similar nonpartisan websites? Please respond at my blog (until I figure out how this system of web products will all work)

Debate Parties in New York City
by Jeff Jordan
On September 30 and October 5, 8 and 13, I gathered together friends, colleagues, and friends of friends for four debate watching parties. Oddly enough, we had our biggest crowd at the VP debate (25 people turned out in our small group). For the three presidential debates, we averaged about 15 attendees.

SAIS Bologna Alums Gather in Washington DC
by Jeff Jordan
A visit by Carsten Wallmeier from Germany inspired a bunch of SAIS Bologna alums to reunite in Washington, DC this past weekend. SAIS stands for the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze (who just died at the age of 97) School of Advanced International Studies. We all studied together in Bologna Italy 1996-97.

For many of us, it was the first time getting together in seven years. Thank you again Paul and Steffi for putting me up for the night.

The New York Sailing Season Ends
by Jeff Jordan   (The Caribbean Sailing Season Begins)
The 2004 New York sailing season has come to an end. Alas I missed most of it, or rather watched it from my office (photo to right taken 10/06/04).

The winter season is shaping up to include one or two sailing trips to warmer climates -- perhaps bareboating in the BVI or Belize over New Years, and the Grenadines and/or Tahiti in February. My dad would also like to gauge interest in a Seychelles trip in July. If you are interested in joining us, please drop me a line.

Ado Visits New York
by Jeff Jordan   Adrienne Granger pays a visit to the Big Apple
Adrienne Granger, a friend for nearly 2/3 of my life now, paid a rare visit to the Big Apple September 30 to October 3. She in fact arrived at the first Debate Party and was able to reserve a table for the rest of us.

Highlights of the visit included lots of eating and walking, a visit to the Met and the Boathouse in Central Park, the Oyster Festival, and watching Avenue Q (Sesame Street for adults) on Broadway.

Stanford Law School News
by Jeff Jordan   Reunion Underway; Carlos Watson
Reunion Underway - The SLS Class of 1999 Reunion is underway in California, and sadly I am not there to celebrate with my fellow alums, but I do send my greetings and hope that one or more of you will put together a photo album and forward me a blurb that I can include in a future newletter.

Carlos Watson - Fellow alumna Beverly Watson and all of us are proud of her brother Carlos Watson, a CNN political analyst, for his great insights into the 2004 Election and coverage of the conventions and debates. Bev is excited to announce that Carlos will be launching his interview special on CNN this Sunday, October 24th at 10pm EST/and 10pm PST called Off Topic with Carlos Watson. He will interview U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama, international model Heidi Klum and basketball player Shaquille O'Neal.
