Course Descriptions: English 2 English 2H Reel Narrative AP English Literature |
English 2English 2 extends the focus on World Literature begun by students in their freshman year at the Seminary, with particular emphasis on British Literature. Through discussion of the literature, and through both formal and informal writing assignments, it is my goal in English 2 to continue to develop students' critical thinking skills and powers of written expression. To this end, students engage in journal writing, written on-line discussions, interpretive and analytical essay writing, and creative writing. Additionally, all sophomore students participate in an extended poetry workshop taught by a local Buffalo poet. Each student's best poem from the Workshop is published in an annual Sophomore Poetry Anthology.Texts for English 2 in the 2002-2003 academic year include: Romeo and Juliet, which all Sem students see on stage at the Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada, Jane Eyre, Dracula, A Doll's House, The Women of Brewster Place, Oedipus the King, Antigone, The Bible As/In Literature, The Lord of the Flies,and In the Time of the Butterflies. Students also read several works of short fiction drawn from Discovering Fiction and poetry selections from Sound and Sense. English 2HEnglish 2 Honors extends the focus on World Literature begun by students in their freshman year at the Seminary, with particular emphasis on British Literature. We extend the study of literature beyond English 2 by connecting ideas among texts and by connecting our study of literature to history. In addition to the works covered in English 2, Honors students in the 2002-2003 academic year will also read Heart of Darkness, and The Inferno. |
Reel NarrativeReel Narrative introduces students to the visual analysis of film. Students learn to read and analyze visual narrative in much the same way that they interact with literary narrative, by learning to interpret shots, camera angles, lighting, composition, framing, and editing. In addition to analytical writing assignments about film, students will be required to practice storyboarding and produce original films based on short fiction. In the course, we will study both films which are directorially important original screenplays and film adaptations of literary texts.Texts for the class include Emma, The Maltese Falcon, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, and Schindler�s List. Films for the class include Clueless, Romeo and Juliet, Citizen Kane, The Third Man, The Maltese Falcon, The Birds, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Blade Runner, Dead Poet's Society, Boyz 'n the Hood, Philadelphia, Schindler�s List, Dead Man Walking, The Usual Suspects and Mulan. AP English Literature & CompositionThis course is designed to prepare students for the AP Literature and Composition Examination which tests students� abilities to read and write analytically. The course emphasizes reading and discussion of classic literature, literary analysis, and AP preparation. Texts for the class include Wuthering Heights, The Time Machine, Mrs. Dalloway, Heart of Darkness, Metamorphosis, The Portrait of Dorian Gray, Macbeth, and British poetry. |
