After falling out of his bed at the Imperial, he took up Ben's offer and is now staying at Ben's house, in a spare room. A Visitor, Welcome Or Not by Bonnie gravity_angle@hotmail.com Jack was awoken by a faint scrapping noise coming from the direction of the window. He opened his eyes and turned his head to see a figure pushing open the window and climbing in. As the figure moved into the moonlight he saw who it was. "Jo?" He exclaimed. "Hi," She replied timidly. She was dressed in jeans and a t-shirt and Jack felt rather stupid lying in bed in his pajamas. He shivered as a cool breeze swept through the open window and was about to get up and close it when he remembered he couldn't, his legs didn't work anymore, he was stuck in that damn wheelchair. Jo noticed this and walked over to the window and closed it, without saying a word, knowing that Jack hated being treated as an invalid. Jo then just stood there nervously watching as Jack struggled to sit up, and after a few minutes managed to pull himself into an upright position. He leaned his head back against the head of his bed and closed his eyes, hopping that when he opened them again Jo would be gone. She wasn't. All day he had listened to Jo and Tess argue about anything and everything that there was to fight about, and every one was getting well and truly sick of their non stop bickering. Ben had the late shift with Tess that night, and had offered to drive Jack home to Ben's house where Jack was currently staying, but not wanting to be an inconvenice he had declined the offer, and had stayed to try and get some leads on some recent burgs. He was extremely frustraited after 2 hours because he was still no closer to working out the burgs. With 5 minutes left till the end of Ben's shift, he gave up and was just about to convince Ben's to go home early when the phone rang with a report of another burg so Ben and Tess left to check it out. He didn't know how long they were gone for, but it was 12:35 by the time they got back, and Jack was really angry and frustraited by the time he got to Ben's house. "What are you doing here, and how did you manage to unlock the window?" Jack glared at her, wishing more than anything that she would just leave. Leave the way she came, *quietly*, without waking Ben, who would probably kick him out if he knew that Jack was having visitors, especially unwelcome ones. "Visiting," Jo said in answer to his question. "and this is how I opened the window." she produced a hairpin from her pocket and dropped it back in again. "Do you have any idea what the time is?" Jack said, getting angrier by the second. "Exactly 2:53AM." Said Jo brightly, sitting on the end of Jack's bed, but her smile faded when she saw the scowl on Jack's face. "Are you even planning on going to work tomorrow?" Jack didn't mean to shout, but the words just came out that way. "If so, why don't you go right now and leave me alone so that at least one of us can get some sleep?" Jo just sat there, with a shocked and hurt look on her face, from Jack's outburst. Suddenly the shocked and hurt expression vanished from her face, only to be replaced by an angry one. Without saying a word, she stood up and strode over to the window. Jo turned abruptly around and stared Jack in the eyes. "Fine! I should've known you wouldn't give a crap. I mean hey, I just thought we were friends, that's all. I thought I could talk to you, I thought you cared, that's all. Jo had spent the last hour contemplating wheather or not to come had talk to Jack. She was just about ready to chuck this whole job in. Her arrival hadn't been to impresive, and she was just getting over Maggie's death when Tess arrived, just to make her life a living hell. She had weighed up all her options, and was still trying to convince herself that a transfer wasn't *that* bad. Jack breathed out slowly. "I do care, and we can talk, about anything you want, just not at 3AM in the morning." Jack spoke softly, but was clearly irritated. "Anyway, what's the matter?" "One word. Tess. She's such a bith, what did I ever do to her? I just don't feel like this job is going to work as long as she's around. We're never going to get along, let alone be friends. I've had just about as much as i can take of her. This is going to sound really stupid, but i'm good at say stupid things. I havn't amounted to anything special. I'm not married, I don't have any kids, or a million dollar career. I'm in this imaginary world where everything goes right all the time and reality hits, hard. What wonderful things have I made out of my life?" Jo paused and walked back over to Jack's bed and sat down. "Exactly, nothing." Jack was a little taken aback by Jo's speech. What she had just said defiantly came from her heart, clearly worried her and just added to her stress levels. But she was getting a little too concerned about this. "Jo," said Jack, with a slight smile creeping onto his face. "You've got your whole life ahead of you, you're getting worked up over nothing really. I mean, it's not like your sixty or anything." Jo sighed a heavy sigh, "Well, I feel sixty." There was some meaning in what she was saying, Jack noted, she looked very tired and both physicaly and mentaly drained. "I being so stupid." Jo said. "No, I being very selfish. Here I am, complaining about my little problems, and you've got it as bad as it comes. I've been so worried over nothing, when you're a paraplegic an..." Jo bit her tounge. Too late. She turned away, not wanting to look at Jack. "Sorry." Was all she managed to say. They both sat silently for a few minutes. Jack didn't mind about the coment, he was sort of used to it now. Jo looked particually depressed. So Jack decided to attempt to make her smile and change the subject. "What? So your relationship isn't going too well?!!" A smile played on Jo's lips, then it faded. "What relationship?" she sighed, now taking the subject seriously. "Join the club!" Smiled Jack. Jo finally smiled. Jo reminded Jack of Molly. Molly had always smiled like that, and she was... no. Jack reminded himself. No, he wasn't going to think about her, she was now in the past, in the past, gone. He sat sadly staring into space, and Jo had a fairly good idea of what he was thinking of. It reminded her of everyone of her failed relationships. Jo sat there, also staring into space, unaware that her gaze had drifted over and become fixed of Jack. They were now staring deeply into one another's eyes. Jo realized what she was doing and suddenly became extremely interested in the floor. Thoughts and emotions circled around her head. She remembered how Jack had always been there for her and, even if he didn't always show it, Jo knew that he cared deeply for her. Jack was thinking the very same thing. Wordlessly Jo crawled up along the bad so that she was facing Jack. Her face was now just inches away from his. Jack made not attempt to move her. He could feel her warm breath on his face, their eyes locked together. Jo ran her fingers gently through Jack's hair and now had her hands wrapped around the back of his neck. Jack slid his arms around her waist and pulled her closer, slowly they moved closer together until their lips were just touching. Gently Jo kissed Jack and he the same, with all the love and passion that he had inside of him for her. Jack felt like never letting go, all thoughts of reality gone. They were focused on each other, and each other only, so involved with the other, that neither heard Ben whisper from outside the closed door. "Jack?" he repeated a tiny bit louderthis time, but no-one answered, because no-one heard. Ben decided to check on Jack just to make sure that he was alright, and that he hadn't fallen out of bed again or hurt himself. "Jack," He said, this time not bothering to whisper, and pushing the door wide open. "I thought tha... " Ben stopped dead when he saw Jack and Jo. He had meant to just just close the door and just walk away, but couldn't bring himself to move, due to shock. Jo pulled away instantly, climbed off Jack and moved to the open door, her eyes on nothing but the floor. She walked straight past Ben, out to the front door and disappeared into the darkness, tears flooding her eyes. Ben just stood there, unable to speak. Finally he managed to back out the door, closing it behind him. He stood in the hallway breathing heavily, and decided to take up the matter with Jack another day, hopefully never. Jack lay down in bed, staring at the ceiling, tomorrow work was going to be hell. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I hope you liked it!
