Their Day Authors note: Please, I need feedback. This is my first ever Blue Heelers fanfic and I would love to write more but I need to know if I can improve drastically in any area. Thanks for reading. Disclaimer: I do not own any of these characters. They are the property of channel 7, Hal McElroy and Southern Star productions. I also have no ownership of any of the songs I've used. ********* This was it. Their big day. P.J has been to many a wedding as a guest or best man but today was his and Maggie's. He sat down of the edge of his bed taking in the atmosphere. His house was full of all his mates. Best men Tom and Ben plus Adam, Nick, Jack and Pat Doyle. They were all busily getting dressed into their tuxedos and preparing speeches. P.J couldn't help but smile from ear to ear. After today I'll be married to the most beautiful woman in the world P.J thought to himself. They would no longer have to check if anyone was watching before they kissed. Everyone at his house was in a state of panic and he wondered if it was the same at Maggie's house. Which it was. Maggie's House "Maggie hurry up we have to finish your hair" Chris said checking her watch. "Just a minute" Maggie answered "Hey aren't brides supposed to be a little late anyway?" Chris smiled "Yeah but at the rate we're going we're going to be late for your funeral as well". Right then, Maggie's bedroom door opened. There were 'ohs' and 'ahs' all round. Maggie looked absolutely stunning in her white satin and lace dress. "You look beautiful!" Jo said in awe of Maggie's dress. "Better than beautiful Maggie" added P.J's mum Helena. "Thanks everyone, now Chris, how are we going to fix my hair?" P.J's House "P.J, snap out of your dream world and get ready" Yelled Nick from outside his bedroom door. "It's Maggie who's supposed to be late not you". "Thanks Nick" P.J replied while straitening his tie. He looked at the photo of Maggie beside his bed, smiled and left. Ben couldn't help but feel a little out of place. He knew that he loved Maggie but also knew that she didn't love him back. He shook his head thinking of how stupid he was to have lead himself on. P.J and Maggie made the perfect couple, anyone could see that. He told himself that he must be there for them as a friend if they needed anything. Maggie's House "Maggie where's the hair spray?" "Dash I put it on your bed" "Ta" Maggie was as nervous as anything. She loved P.J more than anything else in the world. She'd imagined this day ever since she was a teenager but even more recently since P.J's proposal two months earlier. She remembered Nick and Zoe's wedding. Being a bridesmaid in their small but sweet service was moving. Maggie smiled as she recalled catching Zoe's bouquet and then looking immediately at P.J and smiling. He was the person she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. There was a knock at Maggie's bedroom door. "Maggie dear I have something for you" Helena called. "Yep coming". Maggie opened the door to be greeted by a huge bunch of White roses and daisies. "Oh my god, where did these come from?" Maggie cried with a look of bewilderment on her face. "Here's your bouquet. P.J had it especially made for you with your two favourite flowers. He also asked me to give this to you" Helena added. She handed Maggie a small box in covered in red wrapping paper. Maggie opened it to find a gold necklace with a gold heart on it. On it was engraved 'Mags, love forever P.J'. She had tears in her eyes as she put it on. P.J's car (Ben, Pat and Adam went in the other car) Jack finally broke the long stiff silence. "So P.J, how long did it take you to ask Maggie out?" "Three whole minutes Jack. I pulled her over 6 years ago for an RBT and introduced myself, as did she." "What she turned you down?" asked Tom who was driving the car. "Yep. She turned me down for two years at least" "So let me guess, was it the mine?" Asked Nick deviously. "Oh Nick, what do you think?" P.J retorted with a wry smirk. "The mine?" Jack queried, not understanding "Long story Jacko, never you mind" P.J laughed. St Stevens Church The church was packed with all Maggie and P.J's closest friends and family. Pat brought Evie, his new wife. Mick was also there to see his big sister get hitched and P.J's cousins Alexia and Tim were there too. As always, Father Brian was dressed immaculately and smiled as P.J and his 'best men' came in the door. "Hi P.J" "Father" "Tom, make sure you're ready to grab P.J if he falls" "All under control Father" Maggie and the rest of the bridal party arrived in the hired car and walked slowly towards the church. Chris popped her head inside and signalled to P.J who in turn, nodded at Pat who got up and went to join his daughter. P.J drew a deep breath and told him self that this was to be one of the best days of his life. The organ began to play and heads turned towards the entrance. Emma Stewart, the flowergirl was the first to enter wearing her gorgeous lilac dress. Ben's face lit up and he grinned ear to ear. His little girl looked absolutely fantastic. He still wished he was the one marrying Maggie. Jo, Chris, Dash and Zoe were next to walk down the aisle. This time it was Jack, Tom, Adam and Nick who were the ones smiling eagerly. They were all wearing Lilac shoestring strapped gowns that made them all look like angels. Any head that wasn't already turned towards the doors soon was as many guests gasped as Maggie and her dad made a graceful entrance. It was lucky that Tom was there to grab P.J's shoulder as he gazes at Maggie as she walked down the aisle. She was more beautiful than he'd imagined and in his thoughts, she looked so beautiful. Her white satin dress shone as the sunlight penetrated the stained glass windows. He couldn't help but smile as Pat gave his only daughter away and she grabbed his hand. Father Brian began the service. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the presence of God to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony. Marriage is a union that lasts forever. It is a bond that these two people Margaret Anne Doyle and Patrick Joseph Hasham will share for the rest of their lives. P.J and Maggie have chosen to recite their own vows to express their love for one another. Maggie" Maggie turned to face P.J. "P.J, ever since I met you on the highway 6 years ago I've never felt more comfortable with anyone more than you. I love you more than anything else in the world. I promise to love and care for you and be loyal till the day I die" Maggie had tears welling up in her eyes. "Maggie, I have never loved anyone more than you and I never will. I will never hurt you and I promise to love you forever, cherish you and be faithful for the rest of my life." P.J vowed. By now many Kleenex's were in use after the vows were exchanged. "Love is immortal but the wearing of wedding rings is a symbol of the union between two people. I now ask Maggie and P.J to place the rings on each others hand". Both Maggie and P.J picked up the single gold banded rings off the silk pillow that Maggie's young cousin Joey held and placed them on each others finger. "Now with the exchanging of vows and the wearing of rings I now pronounce you husband and wife. P.J, you may now kiss your bride". This was the moment they'd hoped would come ever since they first started going out. Maggie looked deep into P.J's sea blue eyes and knew this was where she belonged. They shared a short passionate kiss and looked up to see the whole church applauding. The next half-hour was full of photos and the signing of the marriage register. After this was all complete everyone headed down to the imperial for the reception. The Imperial Tom, Nick, Dash and Pat all gave moving speeches describing what a wonderful couple Maggie and P.J made. Tom spoke of their professionalism and dedication to policing and how for a long time, no one would have thought that they were an item, despite them having the perfect chemistry. Nick talked about P.J's first attempt to ask Maggie out when they first met. Dash spoke about how they needed each other and how Maggie helped P.J through his HIV scare and how P.J sat by Maggie's side while she was in a coma. Pat told of when Maggie was growing up she could never find someone who was her ideal partner and how that was because he wasn't there. Of how that 'he' was P.J and that you could see it in their eyes. He wished them all the best. It was then time for Maggie and P.J to give their thank you speeches. P.J went first. "Well, first of all, I'd like to thank you for being here for our very special day. I've always said that friends and family are the most important things in the world. Money is great of course but it comes second to me. Secondly, Chris, thankyou for letting us hold our reception here (everyone claps), you've always been a great friend. Last but definitely not least, thankyou Maggie for putting up with me for the last 6 years. I haven't always been the easiest copper to work with. The last four years have been the best years of my life because I've been fortunate enough to share them with you. I love you more than anything else in the world and I know that we'll have a great life together." Everyone in the room smiled and clapped while Maggie tried desperately not to cry before smiling and leaning over to kiss P.J. It was now her turn. "Um, I have to agree with P.J about having your family and friends close to you. I couldn't ask for a better wedding. Everyone I love and care about is here. Everyone except my mum. But I know she's here with me in spirit and I know that she'd be happy that I've finally found the person I want to spend the rest of my life with. Chris, you've been a bit like a surrogate mother to me ever since I came to Mt Thomas and thankyou for helping me through everything plus letting us have the reception here. Tom, Jo, Dash, Nick, Adam and Ben, thankyou for being fantastic colleagues. You've always stood by me when I needed you most. P.J, I have no idea where I would be without you. Your love has given me the strength to be who I am and I'm very grateful to have found you. I love you more than you will ever know I'll be happy spending the rest of my life with you." Maggie now had tears of joy falling down her cheeks. She had the biggest smile on her face. She sat down and P.J pulled her into a hug. He to had a huge smile on his face. After eating the lovely food Chris' chefs had made and after mingling with everyone and after cutting the cake Tom, who was the unofficial MC for the evening announced that it was time for Maggie and P.J's first dance as husband and wife. "Usually this dance is done to the Bridal waltz but P.J and Maggie have decided that they would dance to a song that they feel describes how they feel towards the other. They have chosen 'Now that I've found you' by Human Nature. Tom pressed play on the CD player. *************** How can I Believe that my Heart would find someone like you You see The real me No in betweens I had nowhere to hide You took away the walls around me Made me feel safe to share the truth Chorus: I see the heavens open A heart that once was broken Is holding nothing back Now that I've found you You hold me like a prayer You touch me everywhere A lifetime just 'ain't enough to love you true Now that I've found you Believe We're meant to be Our chemistry will last forever Through the years We'll see some tears We'll conquer fears Together we will grow Looking in your eyes they tell me I no longer have to feel alone Chorus You see me The real me You believe in me Chorus *************** "P.J I love" "I love you too Maggie" The then danced to 'You're where I belong' by Trisha Yearwood After another couple of hours of dancing and mingling Maggie tossed her bouquet. She threw it high in the air and it landed in Jo's lap. She went very red and immediately looked at Jack who also went red and smiled back. The rest of the evening was full of old stories and introductions to family members neither Maggie nor P.J had seen. The time came for Maggie and P.J to go so they got changed and said there farewells before driving off into the night to catch a plane to Perth for their 2-week honeymoon. Both Maggie and P.J knew they had just embarked on a journey that would last the rest of their lives. THE END
