This is a continuation of my Jack/Jo series but this one has a bit more substance than the others! Title: Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil Author: Anne Summary: Caroline Lawson and Jeremy Hasham witness a brutal murder. Can these two children help the Heelers solve the case...before it’s too late? A little girl, about three, in denim overalls and a yellow T-shirt, with her brunette hair swept up in pigtails chased a little blonde boy wearing jeans and a red shirt. ‘Caroline!’ Jo admonished her daughter. ‘Don’t chase Jeremy. That’s not nice.’ Caroline turned around and stared defiantly at her mother. ‘He started it.’ Two year old Jeremy Patrick Hasham turned around and glared at his friend. ‘Didn’t.’ ‘Did too,’ Caroline told him, placing her hand on her hips. Before he could retort, PJ swept his son up in his arms. ‘Don’t argue with your elders.’ 18 year old Madeline Stewart and 13 year old Emma Stewart wandered into the Imperial, being followed by their 9 year old brother Josh and their 2 year old half brother David. ‘Dad tried to fix the plumbing again,’ Maddie sighed, dumping her overnight bag on the floor. ‘Can we borrow the showers Chris?’ Chris smiled, used to this, ever since Ben tried to become the home handyman. ‘Thank god PJ never tried to do that,’ Maggie smiled. She was not impressed at being put on paperwork at six months pregnant, but knew the boss was too overprotective anyway. She grinned happily to herself though. Jo was already three months gone and she would soon be able to comisserate with her. ‘Or Jack,’ Jo nodded. Her husband, having just come off duty with Tom and their new officer, Senior Constable Terry Shevler had just caught the tail end of the conversation. ‘Or Jack what?’ he asked. ‘We were just saying that you should never attempt to be a home plumber,’ Jo explained to him. Jack kissed her softly and picked up his daughter. ‘After what Ben did? No way.’ ‘I heard that,’ Ben said, coming in with his wife Julie. Julie kissed her husband. ‘It’s okay Ben. We know you try.’ The members of the Mt Thomas Police Station and Chris burst out laughing, and Ben grumbled to himself. Maddie and Emma headed for the showers. ‘Big date tonight?’ Jo asked Ben, sitting her daughter on her lap. Ben rolled his eyes. ‘Maddie and Emma tonight. Don’t ask!’ ‘Girls..yuk!’ Josh said. Jeremy and David giggled and copied him. ‘Lovely age,’ PJ commented. ********************************* Caroline and Jeremy were playing in the backyard of Ben Stewart’s home. Emma was supposed to be watching them, but was on the phone with a new boy. ‘Play detective?’ Caroline asked. Jeremy shrugged. ‘Spy?’ Jeremy nodded eagerly and they wandered over to the back of the yard. Caroline stood on the box and hauled Jeremy up beside her. ‘Not tall enough!’ Jeremy whimpered. Caroline muttered something to herself and spied a hole that Home Handy Man Ben still had to fix. It was just big enough for her and Jeremy to fit through. She took his hand and led him through it. They rounded into the neighbours yard and sat behind some bushes, their eyes peeking out. ‘Where’s the money!?’ a man yelled, pushing the other man to the ground. A third man stood watching, his eyes dark. ‘I swear, I don’t know! I didn’t take it.’ The first man took out a knife. Jeremy whimpered and Caroline stuck her hand over his mouth. ‘Finished him off. Good,’ the third man said. Caroline heard Jeremy sneeze and the men start walking. Pulling her friend along, they ran inside to Ben’s with the words “Tell anyone and we’ll kill you too!” echoing in their ears. ********************************** ‘I didn’t mean to leave them! I was only gone for a minute!’ Emma cried, as Ben and Julie sat her down firmly. Jeremy and Caroline sat silently on the sofa, not moving. ‘Emma, something has happened and these two are very upset. We need to know if you heard anything?’ Ben asked her gently. ‘I was listening to my Discman after I rang up Jordan. I didn’t hear a thing.’ ‘Jo and Jack are down at the station,’ Julie said, coming in. ‘Maggie and PJ will be back from an interview soon.’ Ben nodded. ‘Okay, we’ll take the kids down there.’ He picked up Caroline who slumped in his arms. Julie took Jeremy who whimpered. ‘Emma, I want you to stay here till Josh and Maddie come home. Tell them what’s happened okay?’ Emma nodded. ‘I’m really sorry.’ ************************* ‘Hey Ben,’ Jo said, lifting her daughter from his arms. Caroline clung to her mother. ‘What’s going on?’ Julie sat down on a chair and held onto Jeremy who wanted his mother. Ben sighed. ‘Emma wasn’t watching well enough and these two saw something. Neither of them has spoken or anything since.’ Jo looked immediately worried and moved her daughter so she could look into her eyes. ‘What happened darling?’ Caroline looked back at her, expressionless. ‘Bad man,’ Jeremy said slowly. Jack looked at his daughter. ‘Is that what you saw honey? A bad man?’ Caroline nodded her head and leant back into her mother. Jo hugged her daughter closer and looked at Jeremy. ‘Did he see you?’ ‘Only backs,’ Jeremy said, snuggling closer to Julie. ‘We ran fast.’ ‘We’re here!’ Maggie said, herself and PJ racing in. Maggie picked up her son. ‘What happened?’ The group explained the story so far. ‘Do you remember anything Caroline?’ PJ asked her. ‘She hasn’t said a word since they came inside,’ Ben told him. ‘She’s probably in shock. We better take them both up to see Mel Carter and check them over.’ Jo nodded and when she attempted to put Caroline down and get her coat, the girl clung to her like a monkey and wouldn’t let go. Jack helped her and got her coat on. ‘Let’s go.’ ************************************* Mel nodded. “PJ was right. It is shock. She’s seen something terrible and isn’t going to talk. She was probably also scared into not saying a word.” “Well, is she going to be okay?” Jo asked, stroking her daughter’s head. ‘She should be fine. If it’s shock, it will wear off. If it’s not, it’ll take a lot of reassuring. I’ll give you a couple of mild sedatives. She might not sleep tonight.’ Jack accepted the bottle. ‘How are you?’ she asked Jo. ‘Me? Fine,’ Jo replied. ‘I want you to come up if anything happens, okay? This kind of thing can affect parents too and it’s not good for baby.’ Jo nodded. ‘Thanks Mel.’ ********************************* ‘Hi Jeremy,’ Mel smiled at the little boy. ‘Hi Dr Carter,’ Jeremy replied. ‘Your uncle Ben tells me that you and Caroline saw something bad this afternoon.’ Jeremy nodded. ‘Why don’t you tell your mum and dad?’ Jeremy ran his tiny finger across his throat. ‘Bad man.’ ‘He said he’d kill you if you told?’ Jeremy nodded. He snuggled into Maggie’s embrace. ‘That’s probably what has upset Caroline too,’ Mel said. ‘He seems to be fine though. Just a bit quiet. He may start having nightmares though.’ PJ nodded and took his son. ‘Thanks.’ ************************************** Jo rocked in the rocking chair in Caroline’s bedroom. Her hand rested gently on her protruding stomach, the other one, on Caroline’s arm. Jack came into the room, in his boxers and rubbed his eyes. ‘Jo? It’s three in the morning. Have you been in here all night?’ Jo nodded. ‘I didn’t want her to wake up and be scared.’ Jack took her hand. ‘Here, let’s swap. You and the baby need some sleep.’ ‘I’m fine,’ Jo protested. Jack squatted down in front of her. ‘Jo, listen to me. It’s not good for you, or the baby. Please, let me watch her. Trust me.’ Jo nodded and Jack kissed her gently. ‘Go to sleep,’ he said, giving her a playful nudge. He took a seat in the rocking chair and watched Caroline. ********************************* Much the same was happening at the Hasham’s. PJ had finally convinced Maggie to go to bed and he was on guard, in Jeremy’s room. Jeremy was fast asleep, every so often giving a little snore, which Maggie claimed he inherited from his father. PJ watched Jeremy’s innocent little face. ‘I swear, if I ever catch that guy,’ he said to himself. Jo placed Caroline on the seat in the station. Maggie sat Jeremy on the other one. Caroline whimpered and climbed onto her mother’s lap. ‘Okay guys, we need to know what these fellows looked like,’ PJ said, as he and Ben sat down. Tom stood behind. Caroline said nothing and Jeremy shifted slightly. ‘Okay, was he tall, short, middle sized?’ Ben asked. ‘Like Uncle Jack,’ Jeremy said. ‘Was he as tall as Jack?’ PJ asked. Jeremy shook his head. ‘Almost.’ Tom went to answer the phone as they continued. ‘Daddy’s hair,’ Jeremy offered. ‘Same colour?’ PJ said. Jeremy nodded. ‘And a little bit more.’ ‘Good work guys. Was he fat, thin?’ Ben asked. Jeremy pointed to Ben. ‘Like me?’ Ben said. Jeremy nodded. ‘Yeah.’ Tom walked back over. ‘Ben, PJ? A word.’ Ben and PJ headed into his office. ‘Forensics finished with the body. He was stabbed fourteen times in the chest and stomach. His name is Michael Regin. He was a drug dealer.’ ‘The kids saw that?’ PJ asked. He sighed. ‘Great. Drugs again.’ They all went out to the room. Jack saw the look on PJ and Ben’s face. ‘What’s going on?’ PJ beckoned him into his office. ‘Keep going Ben. Mags, you better come too. Jo, Caroline will want you here. Jack can tell you later.’ Jo nodded and hugged her daughter close. *************************************** ‘Okay, crime scene is going over the place and so far has come up with about a thousand dollars in cocaine. But there has been no sign of anyone matching Jeremy’s description,’ Tom explained to them. ‘Is Caroline talking yet?’ PJ asked Jack. ‘No.’ ‘She might remember something that Jeremy doesn’t. She’s a year older than him,’ PJ said. He whacked his fist against the wall. ‘Damn it!’ ‘Calm down, PJ,’ Maggie said, placing a hand on his back. ‘Mags,’ he said, looking at her, and stopped when he saw the look on her face. ‘Guys, can you give us a minute?’ Maggie asked, turning to the rest of the people in PJ’s office. Nods came all around and one by one, they quietly exited the room. Maggie turned to PJ. ‘Do you remember when I was in Witness Protection?’ ‘How could I forget?,’ PJ sighed. ‘Do you want to have the same experience with Jeremy?’ ‘Of course not!’ he cried. ‘Well, then keep your mind on the job. Stop wishing it didn’t happen, because it did, and we can’t change that. We have to find these guys and put a stop to it.’ Maggie took a breath and stared sternly into her husband’s eyes. PJ sat down and nodded. ‘Alright.’ ************************************* Jack turned the page of the book again, making sure Jeremy and Caroline were watching. They came to the final page when Caroline curled up against her mother. ‘What is it sweetheart? Jeremy, can you see him?’ Jeremy nodded and placed his little finger on a picture of a dark haired man, looking grimly at the person taking the camera. ‘Good work Jeremy, Caroline,’ Ben said. He turned to Jack. ‘We better show PJ.’ Jack nodded and the two men went into PJ’s office. ‘They found him PJ,’ Jack said, handing him the book and pointing to the man. ‘Recognise this man?’ ‘Yeah, I recognise the bastard,’ PJ growled.
