JJ was born in Hennessy, Oklahoma and raised in Phoenix, Arizona as a rancher.  He came to Chicago in 1962 and worked as a pattern maker.  Later, he formed a group called "The Barrier Breakers" which was then renamed "The Western Perceptions".  The band played clubs throughout Chicago, Wisconsin, and Denver, Colorado.

The band was hired by Hugh Hefner and became the first Country & Western group to play on the Playboy Club circuit all over the United States.  JJ has played TV shows, numerous Midwestern clubs, State Fairs, and even State Prisons.

JJ recorded on the Mountain label in Denver and Nashville.  He also did benefits for Nursing Homes, Veterans Homes, and the Boy Scouts of America.  He has written many of his own songs.

JJ played throughout the Illinois River & Fox River Valleys and all the surrounding Northern Illinois communities for the past 35 years.
