Castle Lake is reputed to be a great swimming hole, but was too too cold when I was there.  It is a glacier-formed lake, carved out be the movement of the glacier eons ago.  Melting ice echoes off the mountain, causing a constant weird shushing sound.
Plants!
back to index
of course I dawdled on paths taking pictures of plants!  Above Calochortus elegans, Elegant star tulip, only documented in Siskiyou and Trinity Counties(which is why I pronounce this plant with such authority)
Above, on the top, is a berry that I can't remember but my friend Koa does.  Below the berry it looks like a  Mimulus, or monkeyflower.
To the left and bottom right are mystery plants.
This funky customer above is an equisetum, or horsetail, when left to its own devices.  We use them here in LA in "architectural" landscapes where we trim masses of them into box shapes.  But they're so much more Dr. Seussy and fun this way.
