Learn@Hand Overview

What is Learn@Hand?
Learn@Hand is self-paced, Internet-based training offered by handtech.com. There are no books to purchase, no scheduled classes to attend and no additional charges what-so-ever. Because the courses are Internet-based, the courses may be taken anytime, day or night, 365 days a year. And because they are HTML designed, there is no downloading of the courses to a hard drive and no CDs to install; and, they can be taken through a variety of platforms including a MAC.

How are Learn@Hand courses sold?
Learn@Hand courses are sold in 12-month subscription plans. By subscribing to one of these very affordable plans, a student is provided with unlimited access to all courses in that plan for the entire length of the pack.

What makes these courses high-quality?
Our courses are based on sound principles, from extensive research in instructional design, adult learning and information processing. All courses are designed so that new knowledge and skills will be remembered and retrieved for future use.

Courses are divided into units. Each unit consists of:
A well-defined set of learning objectives. A series of interactions that teach the stated objectives. A means for evaluating whether the learning objectives have been met. Many of these Learn@Hand courses carry the coveted MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional Approved Study Guide) and MOUS (Microsoft Office User Specialist) logos. This means that strict development guidelines have been followed in the courseware development process and that the content of these courses has been reviewed and approved by Microsoft as study aids for these professional certifications.

Do the courses contain a testing component?
Within each Learn@Hand course, the student is provided with the option of taking a pre-test to help determine what areas of a topic the student has not yet mastered before the course is taken. This eliminates the need for a student to take an entire course if it is unnecessary. A post-test can be taken to determine the student?s mastery of the topic once he/she has finished a course.

What?s the average time needed to complete a course?
Each PC course takes an average of 2-4 hours to complete. Each Technical course takes approximately 4-8 hours.

Is any type of plug-in needed?
All courses may be taken without a plug-in; however, for enhanced interaction within a course, it is recommended to download and install the Macromedia Authorware Web Player plug-in first, a one-time download. Also, to view and print extra documents that come with some of the courses such as the printable exercises and student guides, Adobe Acrobat is required which can also be downloaded from within the course. (These extra documents are not required to take a course.)

Flexible Timing Learn@Hand courses are ready when you are - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You control the pace -- learn quickly or take your time. You can focus on what you need. Skip what you already know or don't need or take courses repeatedly -- it's your choice.

Delivery
Each course provides students with the same easy-to-use and intuitive course presentation through a web browser (i.e. Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer). No downloading of course files is required before, during or after a course is taken by an online user. This keeps local hard drives free of unnecessary files. Each course page is a separate HTML file, making it easy on network bandwidth, and making it possible to navigate within a course one page at a time on demand. Small page size (average of only 16k) ensures fast response time through the Internet, Intranets, and Local Area Networks without negatively impacting production network performance.

Easy-to-Use Navigation Bar
A Navigation bar in upper right corner of each page in a course gives navigational access to move forward or backward through a course, as well as access to other course components. You can control your learning speed.

Skill Assessment
Generates a customized learning path based on the results of a pre-test of your skills before taking a course. The pre-test identifies individual strengths and weaknesses, allowing you to take only the units you haven't mastered. Allows testing at any time and is available from within each course. Tracks your scores by unit. Initial, current, and best scores are tracked. Scores are available to view on screen or to print immediately. Provides a post-test. You'll know how well you've mastered the material once this test is complete. Allows any course to be taken and your best score to be compared with the Mastery Level Score. The questions challenge you with a variety of formats, including multi-step simulations, true/false, multiple choice, and fill-in-the-blank.

Simulations
Use the free Macromedia Authorware Web Player (formerly Shockwave Authorware) plug-in, enabling you to run the optional simulations found in the courses. Simulations are multiple-step, with realistic screen representations, so you can see how the application really works. Include hints and step-by-step instructions to assist you through the simulation. Simulations may be replayed multiple times for a better understanding of the illustrated concepts.

Index List and Search Functions
You can view an entire course outline. You maintain control of accessing any section, anytime. Search function allows for quick and easy lookup -- excellent reference tool for just-in-time learning.

Master Index
You can quickly review topics and indexed items of all courses and instantly go to the subject in another course while never leaving the course you are currently accessing.

Glossaries
A great reference for obtaining definitions of unfamiliar terms.

Exercises
Give you valuable hands-on experience. Can be combined with the supplied sample files, allowing your new skills to be tested by completing an exercise within the actual application.

Supplied Sample Files
Include sample documents, application files, programs, and programming code. Can be copied into a document or compiler, enabling you to practice with these files and save time by using them in a document or program of your own. Use a split screen approach (the ability to see both exercise instructions and live application on one screen) to ensure full understanding. Allow code analysis and provide sample output, enhancing your learning experience.

Course Location Title Bar at the top of a course indicates what course the student is taking. Status Bar at the bottom of the page shows exact location of where you are within a course (unit and page number).

Global Bookmarking
Tracks your progress in a course. The next time you access the course, you will return to the same location within the course. You don't need to remember either where you stopped or how to return to where you stopped. Can be bypassed if you are only using the course for reference and do not need to bookmark.

Certificate of Completion
If you have mastered all the units within a course, you will see a certificate button on your scores page. You can then view or print a certificate that shows your mastery.

Continuing Education Units
Learn@Hand courses offer the opportunity to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from accredited universities. The process and all necessary forms are available from the Navigate Bar on each course.
