Jiro’s family grew, in 1059 Jiro’s second brother, Senzo, was born. Three years later, in 1062 Jiro’s youngest brother, Shiro, was born.
While growing up, Jiro was a quiet boy, he only spoke when spoken to and usually did as he was told. When Jiro was ten years old, his father decided to give him his shakuhachi.
“Jiro, I want to give you something,” Kazuyuki motioned to Jiro. Jiro stopped practicing on the wooden dummy and walked to his father.
“What is it, father?” Jiro asked.
Kazuyuki extended a bamboo rod, a little over a foot long, and said, “My father gave me this when I was your age. I want you to have it now.”
Jiro took the shakuhachi in his hand and looked at it for a moment, “Why me, dad?”
“I chose to give it to you, because you are the most mature of my children, I feel like it being in your hands it will be taken care of,” replied Kazuyuki.
“Domo arigato!” Jiro thanked him, while bowing.
“Continue practicing, while I find that older brother of yours,” Kazuyuki stated, as he walked away.
Jiro placed the shakuhachi down and continued to practice on the dummy.
