Please do not go and see Sin City. Apart from the horrible dialogue and assinine acting, the movie has some of the most stunning misogyny I have seen in my young life. In short: it is a 2 hour paternalistic rape fantasy. I was so upset by it that I spent pretty much a full day feeling like shit. There are three main "stories." Be warned, it's graphic. Story one: Bruce Willis saves a little girl from a serial rapist/murderer who likes to mutilate his victims. Unfortunately, he's blamed for the rapist's crimes and goes to jail. Oh, but the little girl falls in love with him. Eight years later, Willis gets out, but the rapist wants to "finish what he started" so Willis has to go and save the woman. Again. Story two: Thug has a night with a prostitute and falls in love with her, but the next morning she's dead. So... he goes off on a revenge spree which leads him to a psycho serial killer who likes to abduct women, then carve them up and eat them (oh, and make them watch him eat them) and finally mount their heads on his wall. So... yeah. You get to see a bunch of women's heads mounted on the wall. Oh! But it's okay, because the thug kills the serial killer! So it's uplifting! Whatever. Story three: Clive Owen's girlfriend is smacked around by her ex-boyfriend, causing him to go after the ex. To get revenge (seeing a pattern here?) At any rate, it takes him into a part of town that is run by prostitutes. They're armed to the teeth and one of them is a freakin' human blender, but all the same, HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN SAVE THEM. So, you get the idea. Women are pretty much victims, victims, victims, and the good guys are men who save them and don't beat them unless they get in the way of revenge. It isn't surprising that Quentin Tarrantino has a directing credit on this film, and if I had known that ahead of time, I never would have set foot in the theatre.
