A collection of greatest hits |

The Monkees Greatest Hits-released in 1969 on Colgems. A rather boorish looking LP cover looking pretty much the same on the back cover with the colors reversed. No logo,no pictures,no bios or linear notes,no real reason to buy this album. By this time, aside from watching the reruns I was starting to expand my musical horizons to the likes of Grand Funk Railroad,Chicago,Eric Clapton,The Allman Bros. Band and Edgar Winter. I was getting older and Monkeemania subsequently fizzled out as I entered my high school days. |

The Monkees Greatest Hits-released in 1976 on Arista. Bell Records, aquired in 1970 by Columbia Pictures Industries changes its name to Arista and the Colgems label is history. At least this album had a photo of the group in its 1966 heyday, much better than the haphazard 1969 Colgems attempt. Sadly,Monkeemania couldn't survive the 1970s thanks to disco, heavy metal.the Bay City Rollers(for the girls) and KISS (for us guys). On the bright side Micky and Davy tour the country with Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart as Dolenz,Jones,Boyce and Hart and meet some old fans along the way. |

Then and Now, The Best of The Monkees -released in 1986 on Arista. For all of those(including myself) who missed out on the original Colgems and Arista greatest hits compilations, this served as a breif retrospective to the 80s generation who the Monkees were just twenty years earlier. It is interesting to note that there was talk back then of producing a "New Monkees" series just a couple of months prior to this release with new actors and even a New Monkees LP and CD on RCA but that idea never ever got off the ground. People wanted the original Monkees and that's what they got in 1986. You can't beat the originals they always say..and it ever holds true! |
