The flip side of the '50s/'60s seasoning phobia are the recipes by spice companies. In this cookbook, "Spicy Barbeque Sauce" by McCormick includes onion flakes, celery flakes, pure ground black pepper, allspice, chili powder, cinnamon, paprika, mustard, nutmeg, "Season-All," "Barbeque Spice," garlic salt, and optional red pepper and cayenne. ...Wow.
The cook is obviously overwhelmed, his face distorted into some hideous death mask grin -- a cross between Jack Nicholson and Emeril. Sweat's pouring off of him. And who can blame him, with that ingredient list?

You know, I tell myself, these cookbooks are from a different time; they don't really mean what they seem to. But as logical as that all sounds, there is still something very funny about Trix Cereal being called gay. I mean, come on... look at that rabbit. You can't tell me you've never wondered about it.
And that brings us to the end of "Let's Eat Outdoors." Tune in next time for more fun in the Jim Smith Archive.
