And I thought "Ching Chow" was bad. Here's a typical edition of "The Correct Thing," Elinor Ames's modestly titled feature. If you can't read the text:

Afternoon visitor? Whether your visit is purely social, a club bridge or a meeting of the PTA, be sure you depart well before the homecoming hour of your hostess' family. The average man dislikes to find feminine visitors when he returns from work. Children, whether little or grown up, like a chance to talk to mother while dinner is being prepared. (And if you have a family, why aren't you at home to greet them?)

Ouch! So, either her readers are failed housewives, abandoning their family during the dinner hour, or too pathetic to snag a husband in the first place. Come to think of it, the title of the whole series is pretty confrontational. If it's not alright by Elinor Ames, it's not THE CORRECT THING. It's her way or the highway.

Speaking of women, here's some classy humor from the comics page. The fat, crabby women (as all women's rights advocates are, of course) on stage are all scared away by a mouse, belying the content of their sign. I think the husband in the picture above should share this comic with his wife, while she's fetching his slippers. I bet she'd get a kick out of it.
