1968 Firebird Air Conditioner Power Feed Wire |
A 1973 engine fire in my '68 Firebird caused a replacement of the original factory air conditioner power feed wire and in-line fuse. I wanted to return this circuit to it's original look. I researched the factory wire and searched for replacement parts. |
The power feed runs a high current fused + connection directly from the alternator to the AC Relay. The relay switches in power for the AC/heater blower motor and the AC compressor clutch solenoid. The 1968 Firebird Wiring Diagram AC Circuit (right) and Fig 1A-29 from the 1968 Pontiac Diagnostic Manual (not shown) provides the circuit information. |
Wire: Alternator to fuse holder - 10 ga black double red stripe stranded Fuse holder to relay - 12 ga black double orange stripe stranded Fuse: 30a In-line fuse holder |
A piece of my remaining factory 12 ga black double orange wire. The orange is a pair of thin striped on opposite sides of the black wire. I searched, without success to find this color coded wire. I ended up masking some 10 and 12 ga stranded black automotive wire with tape and used Testors red and orange model enamel paints to simulate the original wires. |
Thanks to fellow enthusiast Yellowbird (via a posting in the firstgenfirebird.org website) for a picture of the factory original fuse holder. I searched and finally found a close match holder. I mixed some model paints to match the ivory look of Yellowbird's fuse holder |
Here's the AC power feed wire and fuse replacement now installed in my '68. |
