Instructional Methods

Goal:  The learner will make Soupe Mast.

Methods for mastering Motor Skills:

These steps guide the learner through the performance of the skills needed to make Soupe Mast.  With corrective feedback and repeated practice, the routine become progressively smoother and more automatic.  The three elements essential to motor skills instruction are executive routine, repeated practice and corrective feedback.

I choose the Progressive Part Practice, which involves mastering step 1, then practicing step 2 along with step 1, etc.  Learners will need to complete step 1, then follow on to complete step 2.  Using the Progressive Part Practice makes sure students master each substep for success.

This objective is primarily a motor skill, but some intellectual skill is required to recognize and blend the ingredients.  The learner will watch the exercise as the instructor performs the steps in order.  The learners will be actively engaged by answering questions along the way, such as defining the ingredients and describing when the ingredients are blended into the yogurt.  This initial participation will lower the learner’s anxiety of unfamiliar ingredient terms and show the logical thinking process and trial/error skills used when selecting the ingredients.  The instructor’s explanation of what the steps do in simple terms will also help.    The students may choose to practice in pairs to help them feel more comfortable and also provide the opportunity to talk each other through the process and monitor how the steps are completed.  The instructor will probe for understanding as the learners work through the steps and will also ensure that each step is completed properly.  These questions techniques will help the learners see the logic in the step sequence and keep them focused on the task.

Job aids of printed instructions are also used to provide learners with lists of steps or information needed to successfully perform the motor skill.  The steps require the learners to correctly do each of the substeps in order to successfully make Soupe Mast.
