PROMINENT ANTE-BELLUM
CITIZENS OF OUR COUNTY
Men who gave
Oglethorpe fame for its Exceptional High Class of the Most Noble Citizenry.
As remembered by Mr.
J. S. Baughn
Editor Oglethorpe
Echo; The map of Thos. B. Moss shows the homes at a more recent date, but
during the existence of slavery, plantations were much larger, but I will say
many who were the first to enlist and who made the best of soldiers, were not
slave owners.
To the southeast of
the fairground was the home of Charles Robertson, who like his father, was a
brick mason, and in 1849, while building the chimneys to Wash. Birdsong's
house, where R. L. Callaway now lives, he was badly bruised by a chimney
falling on him. Soon after he moved to
Paulding County. The next house on the
road has had so many occupants that I hardly know who to name. It was known as the Tucker place. J. D. Tucker lived there quite awhile. Mrs. Elizabeth Howard, after the death of her
husband, Robert Howard, in 1855; moved there and remained till her death, only
two years later. The Colquitt place,
afterwards known as the Downer place, was the home of Thomas Downer, after Mrs.
Colquitt moved to Louisiana in 1859.
Half a mile southeast was the home and final resting place of Pleasant
Robertson, who raised three sons and several daughters.

During the War of
Northern Aggression Sarah was brave and took her children in a wagon to Alabama
where Elijah had gone to start a business.
She is said to have thrown all the silverware in the well before leaving
everything behind to escape the Yankees.
she bravely got through the war zones and was helpful to the Confederate
soldiers who assisted her along the way.
Sarah was instrumental
in the erecting of a soldier memorial that is at the Seth Salem Cemetery in

Notes for SNOWDEN ROBERTSON:
These notes on Snowden
are from "Memoirs of Georgia Volume 2 1895" "Chapter 6 The Bench

It states "
Snowden Robertson, physician and surgen, Dallas, Paulding Co., Ga., son of
Charles and Mary(Wilkes) Robertson, was born in LaGrange, Troup Co., Ga., in
1840. " I am not in agreement with
the name of the mother. Marriage records
indicate that Charles was married twice.
First to Sarah E. Wilkes, Feb. 11, 1840 in Troup Co., Ga. Second to Mary D. Trammel Dec. 27, 1847 in
Oglethorpe Co., Ga. Since Snowden was
born in 1840 Sarah Wilkes would be his mother.
According to the notes Pleasant Robertson was his parental grandfather
who migrated from Petersburg, Va. to Oglethorpe Co., Ga. in 1808. Pleasnt was married to Clasy Perkins in
Oglethorpe Co., Ga., in 1808.
The note stated that
Snowden's mother was the daughter of Moses Wilkes who migrated to Oglethorpe
County about 1810. She was born in 1820
and married in 1839, but the marriage records show 1840.
She died in 1842.

corner of seventh Avenue and Twenty First Street, long since built up with
residences.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF
MR. & MRS. J.D. ROBERTSON
BY: J. JAMES
DATED: 4-24-1923
John Dobson Robertson
was a son of Eligah Robertson of Georgia, where J.D. was born 1840. His Mother's people were named Millner. His parents moved to Florida just prior to
the outbreak of the Seminole Indian War in 1856, when the Indians came to their
community and killed two children. J.D.
and two brothers started without delay to join Col. Leslie who was trying to capture
the Indians. Mr. Robertson remained with
this Company until the last of the Seminole tribe was taken in 1858. In 1860 his parents moved to Jonesboro, Ark.,
where on 12/22/1861 he married Miss Eliza C. Dibble. She was born on the shores
of Lake Michigan near Milwaukee on 5/3/1839.
In 1867 they came to Johnson County, Texas, settling on the farm of Jose
Metze, west of old Pleasant Point.
Mr. Robertson, being a
bricklayer by trade, here built and burned a kiln, the first brick that was
made in Johnson County, and Mrs. Robertson taught a small school on the Metze
farm, the first school in Cahill area.
In 1882 Mr. Robertson
came to Alvarado and bought a small farm just west of the College, and
continued his trade of making and laying brick, and many walls and chimneys yet
stand as evidence of work well done.
In 1888, being advised
to take an invalid son to New Mexico; he started in a wagon following the Ft.
Worth & Denver RR. which was then under construction. Passing Amarillo, which at the time consisted
of only 2 or 3 shacks and a boxcar for a station. At
Tascosa they turned into New Mexico, where they entered a valley of
wonderful possibilities and grand scenery.
They passed Mesa Rotunda, with its many caves, and found a location in
the Charco Valley, where they built a cabin of pine and cedar logs. This was 140 miles from Amarillo - their
nearest railroad point, and there were only two other families in the whole
community. It was a "health
country". But occasionally there
was a death; there was no doctor, preacher or priest. Mrs. Robertson conducted several funerals as
best she could, one of them being a neighbor living 40 miles away. At another time she was called to visit a
sick lady 60 miles away, and thus she served her people, far and near as
doctor, nurse, minister and midwife, and she was a postmistress. On one occasion they were returning from
Liberty, their post office 23 miles away, and were attacked by a large pack of
wolves. Mrs. Robertson shot into the
bunch, which checked them, and by plying whip to their horse managed to escape.
Later he built a large
and substantial rock house, hauling the doors, windows, flooring and shingles
from Amarillo 140 miles away.
During the summer
months he followed his trade, and worked two seasons for the big syndicate
"A.I.T." ranch on the Texas plains, and spent one season building
coke ovens at coal mines in New Mexico.
More settlers came
into the valley, and the need of a post office was met by the appointment of Mrs.
Robertson as Postmistress, and she named the Post Office Dobson, Mr.
Robertson's middle name. (The writer
finds the place yet on the map, about 20 miles southward from Tucumcari.) Mrs. Robertson had to drive 20 miles to the
nearest Justice of the Peace to make her bond as Postmistress, and the post
office was in her home.
While Mr. Robertson
was away at work, as above stated, Mrs. Robertson and children were alone most
of the time, but had good neighbors, even the cowboys proved to be quite
gentlemanly and kind to them. Some of
these were graduates from eastern colleges, and one was the son of a well known
Texas U.S. Senator.
After the full
recovery of the invalid son, Mr. Robertson and family returned to Alvarado,
where he lived until 3 or 4 years age, when they went to Chicago for his
health, and later went to the Colorado mountains for the same purpose, but
returned to Ft. Worth were he died in 1921, and where Mrs. Robertson remained
till her death 4/22/23 at the age of 84.
After the full recovery
of the invalid son, Mr. Robertson and family returned to Alvarado, where he
lived until 3 or 4 years ago, when they went Chicago for his health, and later
to the Colorado mountains for the same purpose, but returned to Ft. Worth where
he died in 1921, and where Mrs. Robertson remained til her death 4/22/1923 at
the age of 84. Remembered and love by
all who knew her, and them, the writer here gives testimony to his high
appreciation of these good people, and especially the high literary attainments
and culture of the deceased Mrs. Robertson.

As you will see from the births and
marriages, Anna Cora Robertson Moorhead was my mother; and Sarah Ann Milner
Robertson was my Grandmother, who was from Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Grandfather, Elijah D. Robertson, was a fine
brick-mason and did brick work on several bridges over rivers, etc., and I
notice from a newspaper write up (copy enclosed) that his oldest son followed
his footsteps.
Walter Robertson is dead, but the
following are his sisters and brothers: Mrs. R. W. Poole, #5 63rd. St.,
Birmingham, AL., Mrs. Minnie Moore, #5 63rd St., Birmingham, AL., Mrs. G. W.
Miles, Atmore, Al., and John Robertson, Senatobia, Miss.
Grandfather Robertson, Grandmother
Robertson and Aunt Lou and her baby and two of Aunt Fanny's and Uncle Plato's
children are buried in the Beth Salem Cemetery in old Boligee on the same lot
my Mother and father are buried on.
There aren't any markers on any of their graves and that is why the
preacher couldn't find them. I want to
have stones put on all the graves if I ever am able to do so.
My Mother always kept up with every one of
her family, brothers and sisters, as long as she lived. She died April the 19th 1921 and I have sort
of lost tract of most of them since. I
never saw Grandfather Robertson, but after his death Grandmother lived with my
Mother, her baby child, till her death in 1936.
I was a thirteen year old girl when she died, but I still remember lots
of things she told us kids about her past life before and during the war. I have some pictures of Grandfather and
grandmother that I prize very highly.
They must have been taken in their later years for the one of
Grandmother looks exactly like she did when she died. I still retain a very bright picture in my
mind of just how she looked for she and I were wonderful pals for we both loved
outdoors and we rambled and rambled, just us two, as long as she was able. I still go over to the old home about twice
a year and have all the graves cleaned off.
It isn't much over fifty miles. I
am going over there this Monday, April 8th, to have the graves cleaned off
before Memorial Day, the 26th of April.
I could probably tell you a good bit
more if I could see and talk to you face to face. It seems that several of Grandmother's
brothers were Baptist preachers, and that one brother had the first gin in
Oglethorpe County, Georgia. I am today
writing the Circuit Clerk of that county for what information he can give me on
the Robertson family. As you have no
doubt heard, the government is doing quite a bit of this kind of work now, and
I am hoping they have accumulated quite a lot of information. I will let you have all information I get as
soon as possible.
I am sorry I can not give you any more
information on our family tree further back than I have. If you have or get any information I don't
have, I will appreciate your sending me a copy of it as one of my daughters
wants to try and trace our family tree as far back as possible. If I get anything else, I will send it to
you.
Any time you or any of the family are
over this way, drop in to see us. And,
should you ever go over to Charleston, S.C. I have a daughter, Mrs L.W.
Secrest, at 117 Ashley Avenue.
Hoping to hear from you again soon, and
with best wishes, I am,
Sincerely,
Mrs. J.T. Whitaker
(Anna Cora Moorhead
Whitaker)
P.S. I found a letter of Mother's from Charlie
Robertson's(Aunt Vick's son) and enclosing it for you to read if you wish. Please take care of it and return to me.
Aunt Victoria Robertson's children were
named Thomas, Edward, Emily and Charles.
They were all living in New York City the last I heard.
Aunt Ella married a Martin and the only
children that I remember were Paul and Lillie.
Aunt Ella's husband was a brother of Uncle Plato's wife. Uncle Plato's and Aunt Fanny's children were
named Cora, Delia and John. Cora was the
one you mentioned in your letter. They
all lived in Howell, Ark. and Little Rock.
Maybe Cora could supply those.
Uncle John and Lida, his wife, lived in
Texas. They had several children but I
only know the names of one, Edward.
Uncle Willie married a Miss Belle
Saunders of Sumpter County, Alabama.
They had eight boys but only two lived, namely Henry and Jim Robertson,
who lived in Oklahoma.
Aunt Vick married her cousin, also a
Robertson.

Born to Samuel G. and
Rebecca Workman Robertson on May 20, 1893, at Rock Hill, Union County, South

Jeptha Thomas Barrett September 26, 1915.
In September 1985 they
celebrated their 70th anniversary. They
went to Fort Myers, Florida when that area of Florida began to develop into a
region for growing vegetable and flower crops for the winter market in northern
and eastern cities. The Barretts were
recognized as pioneers and had recently been honored as such.
Mrs. Barrett's
pleasant personality, friendliness and high good humor made her welcomed and
entertained by relatives and friends on her frequent visits to Heber
Springs.
She is survived by her
husband, Jeptha T. Barrett, and son and daughter-in-law, Max and Alice Barrett.
Interment was in Ft.
Myers, Florida on Friday May 16.
Obituary for Anna M.
Barrett
LONG-TIME FORT MYERS
RESIDENT DIES
Anna M. Barrett, who
along with her husband once farmed the area south of Fort Myers now known as
Miners Corner, died Tuesday. She was
92.
She and her husband,
J. T. Barrett, would have been married 71 years in September. J. T. Barrett still lives in Fort Myers at
the Calusa Harbour Health Center on First Street.
The Barretts and their
son Max, moved to Fort Myers in 1925 from Heber Springs, Arkansas. They bought
and farmed the land now known as Miner's corner at Gladiolus Drive and McGregor
Boulevard.
For almost 10 years,
J. T. Barrett worked as a foreman for Iona landowner Lyman Frank. Then he rented 10 acres, bought a cow and
mule, and grew eggplant, squash and cucumbers.
Eventually Barrett seven acres of prime land now known as Miner's
Corner. By the time retired in 1958, he
owned 200 acres of farmland and about $200,000 in tools and equipment. He eventually sold everything.
"I always had
Anna there by my side," he said about two years ago. "We were a team.
I would have never made it without her."
Notes for JEPTHA THOMAS BARRETT:
Obituary
J.T. Barrett, 96,
pioneer loved farm
By Amy Sheehan
News-Press Staff
writer
December 1, 1989
Longtime Fort Myers
resident Jeptha T. "J. T. " Barrett, who at one time owned and
cultivated all the land now as Miner's Corner died Tuesday at 96.
"All the land
from McGregor Boulevard to Kelly Road - he owned it. Of course, it was known as Barrett's Corner
then," said his son, Max Barrett of Fort Myers. "He had a little grocery store on it
that his nephew Howard Barrett ran before he sold it."
The years Mr. Barrett
spent caring for his crops were among the best in his life, his son said.
"If anyone ever
did love farming, he did. When he got up in the morning to go into the fields,
he was just the happiest thing in the world.
The noise of a potato digger or a potato planter were the most beautiful
sounds to him," he said. "In
the middle of the night, if he heard a little rain, he'd get up and put on his
slicker so he could go dig ditches or whatever was needed. He definitely put in 150 percent."
Born in Quitman, Ark.,
Mr. Barrett worked as a young man making deliveries in a mule-drawn cart.
In a 1985 News-Press
interview Mr. Barrett described meeting his wife at a party.
"I got her to
dance a jig with me. I fell in love that
night," he said.
The two were married
in 1915 and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary before her death.
During the early years
of their marriage, the couple eked out a living farming corn and cotton in
Arkansas, while Mr. Barrett's brother-in-law, a Fort Myers real estate broker,
tempted them with tales of Florida's fertile soil and clement climate.
Unable to resist, the
couple loaded up their model-T Ford and moved here in 1925 with their
6-year-old son, Max. For the first 10
years, Mr. Barrett worked as foreman on Lyman Frank's farm, making around $25 a
week. But after hearing about a
government loan program for farmers, he quit his job and with a borrowed $700,
bought a cow and a mule and rented 10 acres of land where he grew eggplant,
squash and cucumbers. After some years,
he decided to concentrate on potatoes, the thin-skinned, white-fleshed variety
known as Red Bliss.
He later bought those
acres, the first of many land purchases, including the 7-acre parcel from
McGregor Boulevard to Kelly road. Known
for years as Barrett's Corner, it was renamed Miner's Corner after it was sold
in 1967.
"I bought that
land for $7000 - $200 down and the rest $100 a year without interest. That's how cheap land was in the
late'30's," he recalled in the 1985 interview.
When he was 65, Mr.
Barrett retired. He and his wife moved
to a house they designed and built, and he dedicated himself to a variety of
quiet pastimes including fishing, tinkering with electronics and listening to
music, said his daughter-in-law Alice Barrett of Fort Myers.
Church was a big part
of his life as well and he was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian
Church in Fort Myers, his son said.
"He was a devout
Christian person - a very compassionate man. He really worried about
others," he said.
His survivors include
his son Max of Fort Myers and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be
between 7 and 9 p. m. Friday at the Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home, 1600
Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers. Mr.
Barrett's Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church,
2438 Second St., Fort Myers, and memorial contributions in his name may be made
to the church at that address.

Notes for WILLIE GLENN ROBERTSON, JR.:
Letter from Willie
Robertson's wife dated 4/25/85. James
Robertson, Jr has the letter.
Dear Jimmy,
Thanks for sending me
the further notice about plans for the June 22 Robertson reunion at the Civic
Center in Springhill. Had really hoped I
might be able to join you for that but have found that my only daughter, who
lost her husband after a lingering illness last August, has rented a beach
house for that very week in order to get our immediate family in the area
together so of course I will have to to be there for that. I think grand daddy Robertson must have been
officially named Willie as he went by the name of Will but my husband was
always called Willie by his family members.
My husband was one of 6 children named Fred, Elizabeth, Marie, Blanch
and Acree( now all deceased but my other note to you gave addresses of those I
had in next generation). My husband and
I had 3 children, namely W. Glenn, an
automobile salesman in Alexandria, VA., Grace Sibley Veal, school librarian in
Athens, GA., and Thomas Adger with an office for physicians' placement at
Tysons' Corner in Venice, VA. Glenn has
2 sons named William, a Sr. at Vanderbilt\T and Benjamin Adger to start college
at the Univ. of NC(Chapel Hill) next fall.
Sibley also has 2 sons named James McDonald and Ransom Robertson who
attend the University of Georgia. Tom
was my 11 year late blessing before my Willie died in 1956 and he now has 2
daughters named Jessie Lan and Megan.
I'd really appreciate
some report from you about the reunion and hope it proves so successful that we
follow up. I might be able to attend would be forth coming later.
Sincere good wishes
with your exports and do let me know if you are ever coming into the area so we
can meet personally.
Signed Grace L.

Letter from Willie's
Wife Dated February 20, 1985
Dear J.R.
Sincere thanks for your
personal note of Feb. 10 along with the notice of planned Robertson family
reunion at Springhill, LA., possibly June 22.
Will you believe that I have a good friend here in Chester, SC who has
sisters living in Ruston and Spearsville who have been wanting us to come visit
them - so that looms as a real possibility that i may find it possible to join
you then? Of course lots of things hinge
on that possibility, but I was so glad to hear of those advance plans and want
you to know of my interest and desire to be included as a part of the Robertson
clan. Grand Daddy Will (as we called him
after our first two children were born) was one of my favorite people, who I
admired a great deal. Was really sorry
to have missed seeing your uncle Samuel when he came by and left a note, then
later wrote me that he hoped to get back in this area again in connection with
his work. I am enclosing some
information about other Robertson connections in this area with whom I keep in touch. There will be no need to send notices of the
reunion to my three children as I will share what information you send me with
them but doubt very seriously there would be any chance of their considering a
trip your way at that time - but having names and addresses of relatives is
something we all need to keep abreast with, I feel. My younger son, Tom's wife is expecting a
baby within the month, so that is something for us all to look forward to. I also have 4 grandsons between the ages 18
and 21, two each by the other children, then a dear little grand daughter born
Christmas Day in 1977. Altho in my 70s I
continue to play golf and enjoy some traveling, including a short but
delightful winter since Christmas. so continue grateful for reasonably good
health following my 18 years of work with the Dept. of Social Services after
Bill's early death while the children were still of school age. Will look forward to hearing further from you
as later plans develop.
Sincerely and
appreciatively,
Signed Grace L.
Robertson

I have had recent
phone contact with Aunt Annie in Fort Myers, FL. for encouraging report that
both she and Uncle Jep continue in surprisingly good health. Their son Max and his wife Alice's move back
there several years ago has been a real God - send for their retirement
years. I have written her of my letter
from J.R. with notice of the planned reunion and urging that Max might be able
to plan to attend. I so enjoyed
visiting in the Barrett's home several years ago at the same time Glenn and his
wife Lucille were also there as they tried to brief me some on some of the
Arkansas and Louisiana connections. I do
have a good bit of family information
compiled by W.G. Sr. during his declining health years, which I am now looking
over with added interest as to what he found out of some background and the
descendants of the 12 children by Samuel Robertson - and which might prove
helpful to others in the future, so would try to bring a resume of that if it
looms at all possible for me to attend the reunion.

This is an article by
Rosalie Warren
Robertson:Michelangelo
of Brick
The Italians had their Michelangelo -
but Phillips County has its Wille Owen Robertson, an artist when it comes to
laying brick.
When Robertson lays a brick patio, walk
or driveway, it surely is a work of art - and just like the creations of
artists with easel and brush, many people can recognize his work at a glance.
He's 70 years young - and has been
laying brick for 52 of those 70. it's a
family affair, however, his two brothers - R.D. Robertson and Ray Robertson--
bricklayers, along with his late father Reese Dodson Robertson, his grandfather
Samuel Robertson and his great grandfather, T.H.B. McClure.
Not only does Robertson lay brick - he
tells good stories. His grandfather,
Samuel Robertson, fought in the Battle of Helena on the side, of course, of the
Confederacy, and Wille tells this story:
During the battle, he
says, his grandfather men were camped on Crowley's Ridge near Helena. In addition to having been caught in a
downpour, they were also hungry-- and Samuel set about to remedy at least part
of their problem. He spotted a Yankee
gunboat docked on the Mississippi. He
slipped through the lines, boarded the gunboat, and stole two sides of
meat. He put them under his slicker and
made it safely back to camp.
After the war, Samuel went back to his
home at Heber Springs, made his brick, fired them in his own kiln, and built
houses -- many of which are still standing.
He tells another story of his great
grandfather putting up Frank and Jessie James for the night. According to Willie, the two outlaws came to
his great grandfather's home near Heber Springs and wanted a place to stay for
the night. He gave Frank and Jessie
supper and breakfast, fed their horses, and never let on that he knew their
identity. His great grandfather said the
James boys were just looking for a place to stay and moved on the next morning.
In 1924 and 1925, Waverly Woods and the
Crestwood subdivisions were being developed and Willie and his father came to
the area and laid bricks for many of the homes.
Some contractors with whom he worked
included E.T. Walker, Harvey Walters, Val Oldham, and Kesl and Sons. But wages were only $1.12 per hour so Willie
left Philips County and went to Memphis, where he worked on many
buildings. He worked at the Naval Air
Station, the power plant, and in residential areas where 20 to 25 homes were
being constructed at a time.
He served two years in the Navy and was
discharged a Lieutenant. He also taught
brick masonry to veterans in Memphis.
He has worked all over the state of
Arkansas laying brick on Post Offices, Courthouses, school buildings and laid
most of the stone on the fine arts building at Monticello College. He laid brick on many schools in Russellville
and Sherffield, Alabama and also Charleston, Indiana.
In and around Helena, Willie helped his
father build the fine walls in the old Perkins(Chrysler) plant in the 1920s -
where Mohawk now stands, the Long Bell Hardwood flooring Mill(where H&M
Lumber Company is now), the Greco Service station (1927) which is the Two State
Monument Company now, and the old Plaza where the Public library is now
located.
In later years, the 1950s, he laid brick
on the J C Penney building, the Bobbie
Brooks Garman factory (where the fair was held for years and also used as a
prisoner of war camp in World War II), and the Barger Cafe.
Some of the homes Willie has laid brick
on is the Jessie Peter (brother of Miss Lily Peter) home at Ratio now owned by
Brooks Griffin, Earl Wells Jr. on Perry; Harland Ross, Carlos Smith and J.W.
Dennison homes on Stonebrook Road, the
Earnest Cunningham and Roy Warren on Valley Drive and John King Jr. on Avalon
Place in Helena, just to mention a few.
Willie has a very good assistant, Mr.
Ralph Reddick who is 82 working working with him. Mr. Reddick has assisted Willie and his
father for sixteen years. He mixes the
mortar with the care of a fine gourmet cook, and Willie knows the consistency
will be just right.
The brick Willie donated to the West
Helena Museum was retrieved from the old (1800) Jim Bush buildings being torn
down behind the First National Bank to make way for a parking lot. The buildings were later owned and occupied
by Helena Electric Company and the James Zambie Cafe, until they were razed
several years ago. The brick was
probably made by slave labor and is hand made with the print of the paw of a
dog in it. There was a brick factory at
one time in Helena.
Willie and his wife live on North Sixth
Street in West Helena. He has tried to
retire because he loves fishing more than laying brick, but people keep calling
him for his artistic work. He says, I
don't hunt work, it finds me.

died February 03, 1990 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Notes for JAMES ROLAND ROBERTSON, SR.:
James grew up in
Shreveport, Louisiana. Ceder Grove was
the area of Shreveport he lived. 105
east 72 St.
James served in the
Navy SeaBees during World War II. He was
a Builder First Class Petty Officer.
James was known as
"Tubby" by his friends and family.
James was a brick
mason. He worked for International Paper
Company from 1950 to 1975 when he died.
He was a foreman in the plant, but still worked with his tools. Before
working for IP, he worked construction as a brick mason across Louisiana and
Arkansas.
James was also a
founding member of the Springhill Association for Retarded Citizens. He served as President and other
offices. He was also a member of
Louisiana Association for Retarded Citizens.
He held every office but president.
Along with his wife, Hilda,
started Camp LARCEE, a summer camp for people with mental
retardation. This camp ran from 1959 to
1978. He spent two weeks of vacation
each of those years at camp. Camp LARCEE
provided a place for people with mental retardation to have fun and
recreation. It also provided a training
ground for people who wanted to work with the disabled. Over the years a college course was taught to
the counselors. They could get two hours
college credit. Many of the counselors
went on to become teachers or go to work in the disability field. All of the family worked at camp.
James also helped many
people in the community. He along with
his family helped people whose homes had burned down rebuild their homes.
James and Hilda were
honored by the American Association on Mental Retardation- Louisiana with a "Significant Contributions of the
20th Century" recognition award August
5, 1999
The article about them
reads
"Hilda and James
Robertson(Jimmy) was a young family with a small son, soon to become the
parents of a baby girl that happened to have Down's syndrome. This even changed the lives of this family
and the entire community of Springhill, LA.
The efforts of these two people extended to the entire state of
Louisiana and other southern states. As
their little girl grew older, the medical community suggested that the family
put their child in St. Mary's School.
They packed her suitcases and went to the school. They returned home with their little girl unable
to part from her. Their world begin a
lifetime involvement of providing services for her and others with
disabilities.
Hilda and Jimmy
started the Evergreen Presbyterian program.
The facility was started with a few boys in an abandoned school. Now, Evergreen Presbyterian Ministries has
programs in five states serving over 600 people with disabilities an array of
services.
Hilda and Jimmy were
involved in getting the first public school special education class started in
Webster Parish. Their little girl was
enrolled in the class with ten other children.
Now there are several classes in every school.
They were both
involved in the local and state Associations for Retarded Citizens with each
one serving in leadership positions in both organizations. They both served on the Board of Directors in
both organizations. Three generations of
Robertson's have now served on the State ARC Board of Directors.
The local ARC with the
leadership of the Robertson's opened SPARC Center Workshop in Springhill to
provide training for the older person who needed job skills for
employment. They now serve 65 people in
a variety of jobs.
Their next major
project was Camp LARCEE - a two week recreation program for children with
mental retardation. It came into
existence in 1959 with twelve campers.
Counselors were college students that received three hours of college
credit for working two weeks at the camp.
In 1978, there were 160 campers attending the last camp at Lake
Bisteneau.
After Jimmy's death, Hilda
had a burning desire to provide for their daughter's future. Typical of Hilda, she went to the local bank
and borrowed the money to purchase a house and convert it into a co-ed group
home. This was the first co-ed group
home in the state and the only group home in Springhill. Bell Oaks, Inc. was formed with their
daughter as the first occupant. Now
there are three group homes and a large array of services for people with mental
retardation in the Springhill area.
Hilda and Jimmy worked
tirelessly to develop programs. They
enlisted family, friends, coworkers, businessmen, union and management people,
politicians, and students to assist in this work. This remarkable couple met their simple
goal. That goal was to provide a network
of excellent services for the person with disabilities to help them gain their
independence, enhance their self-esteem and dignity and personal worth as a
member of society."
This is a letter that
James wrote his mom and dad in 1944.
James R. Robertson, Jr. has the original Letter.
Berkley,
California
November
25, 1944
Dearest Mom and Dad,
I am sorry I haven't written you before
now, but you know me when it comes to writing letters, I just never seem to get
around to it. This evening I borrowed one of the boys typewriters and am using
the good old hunt and peck system to write.
Maybe I'll get it written this time before I quit, like I usually do
when I start a letter to you.
How's Jimmy's foot where he dropped a
brick on it? God only knows how much I would love to see the little wart. You'll never know how lonesome a fellow gets
to see his own son. I have it all
figured out. When I come home, I am
going to spend the entire day there just having fun together and maybe I'll buy
him a complete outfit of clothes. That
is all I have been able to think of for the past several weeks. It is kind of hard now to realize I have a
son, I've been away from him so long now.
I can't even begin to imagine how he looks. The most outstanding thing I always remember
about him was the cute way he used to tell me, " Me fix it Daddy" and
I met Hilda and him in the train station that time, or rather when they met me
and he said, "Hi, Tubby", gosh it hurts to remember those little
things about him, but if I didn't have those sweet memories, what would I
have? When this old war is over, I'm
going to have a whole house full of them, dozens and dozens. Ha!
I'm still stevedoring. Working days now. But in another week or so, I'll go nights
again. It surely gets old. I'll be kind of glad to leave this place. I
don't like California anyway. It is
always so cold and damp. I keep a cold
all the time. I have one right now. I'm going to the pharmacist here in camp for
it every evening.. He is giving me some pills for it, so I guess it won't be
long now until I am rid of it.
I told the Chief the other evening that
I would be glad to do anything rather than do this stevedoring. He laughed when I said I rather keep the
stoves filled with oil than do what I am doing.
I've loaded enough stuff on ships since I've been here to feed and
clothe the whole of Europe and then some.
It isn't that the work is so very hard, it just gets monotonous.
I know you get tired of my belly aching,
but if I couldn't grip to you all, who would I gripe to?
Well, folks, I guess I will close for
tonight. Got to go take a shower (cold)
and get some shut-eye so I can get up when 5:30 rolls around in the morning.
Give my love to Hilda and kiss Jimmy Boy
for me and tell him Daddy is thinking of him and would give anything to be able
to see him.
All
my love, your Son,
(signed)
Jim

A Loss For Springhill
Springhill has lost
one of those citizens it cannot afford to lose. The sudden death of James
(Tubby) R. Robertson will leave a gap in the ranks of those who were always
willing to do something extra to make the community a better place in which to
live.
Robertson was no
political leader nor was he continually making front page news with great
pronouncements. He was a doer. He did and did and did.
Listing the things he
did would take pages, but two of his most shining accomplishments will live
forever.
Robertson was one of
the moving forces, probably the first and most insistent, in the founding of
the Evergreen Presbyterian Vocational School.
This school, now nationally famous, was the result of months and years
of night riding, sweat, and dollars from his own pocket.
Tubby was the founding
father of Camp LARCEE. Camp LARCEE is the state-wide camp for mentally retarded
children founded in 1958 at the state campgrounds at Lake Bisteneau. He, his wife, and a handful of others begged
food, funds and help from Springhill residents in order to offer the mentally
retarded summer camp. It was his concern
and effort that kept the camp going during the critical formative years. It was his labor that provided much of the equipment
for the camp. It was money from his own
pocket that financed some of the ventures.
Camp LARCEE is now
financed from all quarters and is considered a fixture in Louisiana. In fact it
is a model which many other states have copied.
So strongly entrenched is the camp that several universities in Louisiana
offer college credits to students who serve as counselors.
He was one of those
people who you knew you could call on for help and it was forthcoming. He never refused.
Tubby was not, as we
said, a politician or a business or industrial leader. He was a brick mason. He was good at his trade. One of the best. And, he used his trade and his skills for the
betterment of Springhill and the people who live here.
He was one of those
people who carried not only his share of the load, but he also carried the load
for others less inclined to care about the welfare of his fellowman.
His loss will leave a
void not only in the lives of his family, but also in the lives of the hundreds
and thousands of people around Springhill and in Louisiana that he helped in
one way or another.
