Notes from Hugh Akridge
John B Akridge was
commissioned a Captain in August, 1861 in the early stages of the Civil War. He
helped to establish a company of men known throughout the war as company K,
21st Georgia Infantry.
Wounded three times
before the fatal wound at Drewry's Bluff, VA.
John never married or
had children
From the History Of the
Doles-Cook brigade, Captain John B. Akridge was recorded as "a splendid
officer, an excellent gentleman and a brave soldier".
Some reports state John
B. receiving wound and dying same day, other reports have him to die a week
later upon arrival at the Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. Research fails to find his grave site at the
Chimborazo cemetery in Richmond. Perhaps
he is buried near Drewry's Bluff, VA.
Company K, 21st Georgia
Infantry was also known as Bartow's Avengers.
At the Seven Day's
Battle, General Richard S. Ewell wrote on his report of the conspicuous bravery
shown by Captain John B. Akridge among others.

Historical Society Quarterly, Vol. 8 # 3, Fall 1995 pg.8
From Four years on the
Firing Line by James Cooper Nisbet (edited by Bell Irvin Wiley)
(At the time of this
incident, Jackson's command had inflicted much damage on the Yankees, forcing
them to divert reinforcements from McClellan's Peninsular Campaign. Jackson is now in a tight spot, nearly
surrounded by the enemy. He has
entrusted General Ewell's division ( of which the 21st is a part) to stop Union
General John C. Fremont's attack. They
are now at Cross Heys, Virginia and it is early June of 1862. At this time, James Cooper Nisbet was Captain
of Company H (Dade Co) John B. Akridge was Captain of Co K, and Foster 1st Lt.
of Co K).
But to return to the
charge on the 8th New Your. As we jumped over the fence, I heard the sharp
crack of a small pistol and saw the weapon in the hand of 1st Lt. Kinch R.
Foster of Co K. Just then one of his men
a mere boy, turned and said; "Lt. you shot me" His captain, John B. Akridge, accused Foster
of shooting the boy. The Lt. denied it,
and the boy's Captain appealed to me. I
said: "That can be attended to
hereafter; we have plenty of Yanks to fight now, come on!"
After the battle
Akridge took up his charge against Foster.
As I witnessed the affair, Captain Akridge insisted on my going with
them back to where the surgeons were operating.
When we reached the spot, there lay the boy, Tate, against a tree,
waiting for his turn to be put on the table.
When the wound was examined it proved to be slight and in the fatty part
of the back. The surgeon's probe
extracted the ball, which was a .22 caliber, rifled to fit Foster's little
pistol.
Then old Akridge swore
like the "army in Flanders' and his remarks about Foster made things look
blue, and gave the atmosphere all around there a bluish tinge. He said Foster was so scared he didn't know
hes own men from the Yankees; and divers other things about " an officer
that would carry such a damnable little weapon!" There would have been a serious personal
encounter between these two but for the Yank's proximity.
Old Captain Akridge's
(he was about 32 at the time) affection for him men, especially for this boy
Tate, reminded me of Uncle Toby's for his men in Flanders, particularly for
Corporal Trim."
In his report of the
battle of Cross Keys, fought June 8th, 1862, Major General Ewell says,
"Brigadier Trimble's Brigade bore
the brunt of the action and is entitled to most thanks.
Bartow Avengers ( the
following was taken from the History of Doles-Cook Brigade, Henry W. Thomas, 1903)
Co. K, 21st Georgia Infantry, Bartow Avengers" was formed in Chattooga
County, on August 28, 1861 and went on to become part of one of the most battle
hardened regiments of the war. The 21st
was with "Stonewall" at Chancellorville, with Early during the
Shenandoah Campaign, and with Lee throughout Virginia and at Appomattox).
May of 1862 found the
21st with Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley. Two days later, May 25, we were
rushed into Battle of Winchester. In
this battle the Federals w4re strongly posted behind a stone fence. Repeated charges had been made on this stone
fence and repulsed, and the day seemed almost lost, when the 21st Georgia was
ordered forward to make an assault and carry the works, which they did in fine
style. The remainder of the division
following poured over the fence after the enemy, who was completely routed, and
the day was saved to the Confederates.
Following closely on the hellos of the battle of Winchester came the
battle of Strasburg, in which the regiment took an active part. Soon thereafter came the battle of Cross
keys, in which the 21st Georgia drove the enemy from the field and captured a
stand of colors for which the regiment was publicly thanked and highly
complimented by General Ewell."
Of all the regiments
engaged in the war between the States, North and South, the 21st Georgia was
the third in number killed in battle.
The regiment that lost the greatest number was the 8th New York, and
they were killed by the 21st Georgia."

Notes for LEVI Y. AKRIDGE:
[jim2.FTW]
Notes from Hugh Akridge
on Levi Y. Akridge:
At one time Levi Y.
Akridge owned property in then Pulaski County, Arkansas next to his brother
Ezekiel.
This property was very
near the Toltec Mounds close to England, Arkansas. At his death, his only possessions were his
horse and saddle.
It is believed he gave
Elizabeth Akridge, daughter of Ezekiel Akridge a parcel of land, 200 acres,
before he left Arkansas to return to Georgia.
It is believed he is buried in Chattooga, County Georgia.
Levi was murdered in
front of the Courthouse in Summerville, Georgia on March 17, 1875 by a former
county judge and his son. The story is
there was bad blood between Levi and the judge for many years and it finally
came to a head.
Notes from Valette
Notes for Levi Y.
Akridge
Shortly after Judge
Francis A. Kerby was appointed tot he bench, six young men, who were part of
the radical element now running the KuKluxKlan in the county, took it up on
themselves to visit the home
of a black family near
Holland to chastise a man named Squire Allison who had evidently had some
unkind things to say
about the Klan. During the encounter
Allison ran from his home, but was caught
by the group of
disguised riders and his head split with a saber being carried by one of the
men. Later
on the same night, as
the wounded Allison was trying to make his way back home, he had the
misfortune of running
into the Klansmen again. This time he
was shot and left for dead. Although his
wounds proved fatal, he
did not die immediately. He recognized
some of his assailants and lived long
enough to identify them
to his landlord before his death.
Sheriff Harris Garrett
was notified of the incident, but was either unwilling or else unable to do
anything about it. Law and order had generally broken down in
the county by this time. Many men
seldom ventured outside
their home without carrying some type of weapon, usually a pistol, and usually
concealed.
Since the sheriff did
not take action against the men who killed Squire Allison, the incident was
reported to Maj. Gen.
Alfred Terry, the Union military commander of Georgia. This is when Judge
Kirby enters the
picture again. he made a trip to Atlanta
to see Gen. Terry and within a few days a
company of Federal
troops was dispatched to the county and quartered in the courthouse in
Summerville. After being in the county for Only a few days,
the troops mustered in the middle of the
night and went to the
home of Levi Akridge in the southern part of the county. There they dragged
Akridge from his bed
and hauled him off to the county jail.
This opened a can of worms. On
one hand,
Akridge was a known
troublemaker. He had been involved in
all kinds of trouble and probably
belonged in jail. On the other hand, martial law had been
suspended. The military had no legal
right to
go into anyone's home
without a warrant, and they evidently did not have a warrant in this instance.
Also the soldiers
wouldn't tell Akridge what he was being charged with. Before the night was over, the
Federal troops had
violated just about every principal of due process. As word spread of the Akridge
arrest, the mood in
certain quarters of the county became rather ugly.
Some time after Akridge
was arrested a group of between 150 and 300 masked men appeared at the
home of Judge Kirby and
demanded he arrange for the release of Akridge.
When Judge Kirby
protested, he was
reminded he was responsible for the troops being in the county and he had the
choice of securing
Akridge's release or else he would be hanged.
Off Judge Kirby went to the Federal
commander and obtained
the release of Akridge. The result of
all this was: (a) Levi Akridge left the
county for a time,
going to Texas to live; (b) Judge Kirby was removed from the bench by Gov.
Bulloch and replaced by
R.D. Harvey or Ringgold, the man who was originally supposed to have been
appointed as the judge; (c) the commander of the Federal troops who released
Akridge was court-
martialed; and (d) what
had been simply and absence of law and order now became anarchy, which
existed in the county
for a short time.
The release of Levi
Akridge from jail, and his subsequent flight to Texas did not end the matter
between Akridge and
Judge Kirby, Akridge was back in
Chattooga County within three for four years.
On March 17, 1875 Levi
Akridge was gunned down on Commerce Street, at the very steps of the
county courthouse. Three men were indicted for his murder. They were: Former Judge Francis A.
Kirby, his 21 year old
son, Lawson Kirby, and Jefferson Johnson, Jr. (who was the husband of his
cousin Armintia Price
Johnson).
Akridge had returned to
Chattooga County and was living on the land owned by Jefferson Johnson in the
south end of the
county, between Sardis Baptist Church and Chattooga River. Akridge and another
tenant on the Johnson
farm, J.E. Thomas, became involved in a law suit of some sort, and Akridge
employed former Judge
F.A. Kirby to represent him in the Thomas suit.
When the case was
settled, Akridge felt that Kirby had somehow cheated him out of $15.00 and he
made no secret of his
displeasure. He told a number of people
that Kirby had "stole" the money from
him and he referred to
Kirby in a number of unpleasant ways.
While there may have been other
underlying factors, the
murder of Akridge apparently came about because of the $15.
The events that would
lead to the death of Akridge were set in motion on the night of March 16, 1875.
At about 10:30 PM
Lawson Kirby arrived at the home of Jefferson Johnson in the Chattoogaville
community to tell him
the Levi Akridge had "abused" him, his father and Johnson on the
proceeding
day.
The next day, March
17th, Akridge, Raymond W. Allen and two others were to go on trial in
Summerville, charged
with creating a riot. on this same morning as Lawson Kirby w3alked down the
street in Summerville,
his hat blew off his head and was "whirled" up to a grocery store
where Levi
Akridge happened to be
sitting on the steps of the store. At
that point Levi Akridge approached
Lawson, and in what
Judge Kirby described as "a furious and violent passion," cursed
Judge Kirby "for every bad and vulgar character he could think." Meanwhile, Judge Kirby was in Thompson Hiles'
store
where he commented to a
group that he was "ready for him".
That same morning, Jeff Johnson Jr. had
gone into Hiles store
and bought buckshot shells for his shotgun, commenting that he was expecting
trouble. While Judge Kirby was still in the store,
Lawson arrived and told his father what had just
happened in his meeting
with Akridge, and expressed, concern that Akridge would try to do his father
harm. Meanwhile, one of the men who had been in the
store went to Akridge and told him that Judge
Kirby had said that he
was "ready for him" either deliberately or unwittingly "adding
fuel to the fire"
Meanwhile, Jefferson
Johnson had arrived in town, apparently just before noon, and Judge Kirby
"went
over and brought him
and Mr. L.E. Wheeler (another relative by marriage) and some other young men to
dinner with me." After the group had finished their lunch at Judge Kirby's
home, they all went back downtown toward the courthouse. Johnson arrived at the courthouse first
because he had ridden Mr.
Wheeler's horse while
the others had walked. He tied the horse
and walked over to where Akridge was
sitting by the door of
the courthouse. Some of the witnesses
say Johnson was "reeling" as if he was
drunk. Johnson asked Akridge if he "had
anything against me," and Akridge replied that he did not.
Akridge then asked
Johnson the same question. Johnson
replied, " yes, God damn, I have.
Yesterday
you cursed Judge Kirby,
Lawson Kirby and myself." Akridge
replied, "I didn't curse you." Johnson
then said, "you
are a God damned liar!" With that,
Akridge said, "Jeff, I don't want any difficulty with
you. You and I have made an agreement to let each
other alone, Jeff. I don't any
difficulty with
you." With that Akridge turned and walked
away. Johnson stepped in front of him
and said, "God
damn you, have you
cursed me?: With that question, Johnson
is said to have pulled a Derringer from
his pocket and pointed
it at Akridge. At this point, some of
the bystanders intervened and took
Johnson's pistol. Then Judge Kirby arrived and, according to
his letter, "said to Mr. Akridge in a mild
and supplicating way
the following words, arranged in my mind before I saw him: Levi, when or
where did I ever injure
you in money, property or character?
Tell me and I will make the amends
honorable and
publicly." Kirby said that Akridge
then thrust his fist in his (Kirby's) beard and
"chucked me under
the chin" and said, "you are a God damned rogue and a God damned
liar!" At this
point, Johnson and
said, "you told a damn lie."
At that point, each man is said to have swung at the other, "at the
same time nearly." L.W. Wheeler, Jeff Johnson Jr., Sheriff W.D. Kellett,
G.W. Crogt and others seized Johnson and Akridge and pulled them apart. Johnson then reached behind himself and
pulled a large pistol from his belt. Mr.
Wheeler and a man named Berry grabbed Johnson and took his pistol. Levi Akridge then turned to walk away again.
Meanwhile, Lawson Kirby
had obtained a shotgun from somewhere, possibly from Jeff Johnson,Jr.
and he walked to the
southwest corner of the courthouse with the double barrel gun in his hand. Mr.
Berry saw him and told
young Kirby, "Lawson don't shoot! Listen to me a minute!" Lawson replied,
"Berry, stand
back! Levi Akridge cursed me and my father and I am a cripple without
assistance." At
this point, the version
of Judge Kirby and the other witnesses begins to vary considerably. Judge Kirby
says that Akridge had
turned and headed back toward the group that included Kirby, however, not one
of them mentions Akridge having a pistol.
Raymond Allen, who had been talking with Akridge, is said to have walked
toward Lawson Kirby and young Kirby backed against the courthouse wall with the
shotgun in his hands. At some point,
Lawson pulled the trigger of one of the barrels. The gun fired, or misfired, according to
which version you accept. Some of the
witnesses thought Kirby fired into the ground, while others thought Kirby shot
at Akridge with the gun misfiring and only the primer cap exploding. When his first shot was fired, witnesses sat
that Akridge turned toward young Kirby and "squatted". He then began
to dart from one person to another, trying make his way toward young
Kirby.
judge Kirby had this to
say about events as Levi Akridge tried to make his way to Lawson; "when I
saw my son backed against the wall and heard him say what he said, I said, my
son, stand your ground. Don't run. By God, every dollar I have is
yours." judge Kirby added in his
letter, "The wicked words to my son, for which I pray forgiveness, were
used because I saw my son's crippled condition.
To run was certain death."
At the time his father had called to Lawson, Akridge had stopped behind
Mr. Wheeler, who jumped aside. When he
did, Lawson fired again, striking Akridge in the chest.. Akridge staggered back a few steps and fell dead. Lawson Kirby ran from the scene, and as he
fled Raymond Allen pulled a pistol and fired several shots at young Kirby, none
of which struck him.

Notes from Hugh Akridge
on Levi David Akridge:
Levi David Akridge
bought and sold land in Faulkner County, Arkansas before leaving as a young man
traveling to California. It is reported
that Levi only came back once to Arkansas.
He became a farmer and also helped his sister Dora and her husband William
Kirkman in the peach orchards. Levi
became quite successful and owned a large farm in Madera, California. Levi had a last will leaving his entire
estate equally to his half brother William W. Akridge, nieces Ella J. Baxter,
Lucy E. Alford, Etta J. Baxley. Levi's
nephew, William T. Kirkman, Jr. bought each heir's share for about $1500
each. Total value of estate was
appraised for around $18,000. Since the will would have to go through Probate
Court and possible other proceedings it seems the heir's decided to take the
offer of William T. Kirkman and get their money immediately instead of waiting
and getting much more.
It is quite certain
Levi had only one arm, but do not know which arm or how he lost it.
Levi died of cancer on
Oct 14, 1937. His remains were buried in
Brentwood Cemetery, Brentwood, CA., Funeral Director R.S. Jay & Son,
Madera, CA.
