From Carlsbad we drove through Guadalupe Mts. National Park. New Mexico is much like Arizona in that large amounts of land are dedicated to National Parks and Forests. In Arizona 43% of the state is owned by the Federal Government. The Guadalupe Mountains are very beautiful.



Almost as soon as you leave the beauty of the park, you drive on to the starkness of the Salt Flats.



Although they appear barren they were quite valuable in days gone by.



It almost looked like the ground was covered with snow (except that the temperture was in the 100s).
