El Malpias (The Badlands) is located just south of Grants New Mexico. It is a huge lava field that is from 2000 to 150,000 years old. This picture was taken from a bluff overlooking the lava valley below.
It is very difficult to walk across the lava so for many years it went unexplored. Our grand kids tried walking on it but didn't get very far.
Just to the east of the lava field is one of the largest natural arches in New Mexico.
In 1950 uranium was discovered near Grants and was mined there until the 1980s. In Grants there is a uranium museum. Under the museum is a replica of an old uranium mine.
