Chinese  Crested  Information
The information on this page is for the benefit of those considering a Chinese Crested as a new member of the family.  They are a small member of the toy breed, reaching no more than 12-13 inches height; cannot take the cold; thrive on attention;  and love to be treated as equal members of the family.  Unfortunately, employers have never heard of "Pupternity Leave" so if you are employed on a steady basis, this may not be a good time for you to raise a new puppy unless you have someone at home to share the responsibilities when you are away.

The Chinese Crested Dog has the distinction of availibility in two types of coat.  The "Hairless" has no body hair except for the top of his head, the back of his neck, his feet and the end of his tail.  The "Powder Puff", has a full coat as pictured to the left.  Both Hairless and Powder Puffs can be born in the same litter and frequently are.

Research; Time; Attention; and  Resources are key elements to consider when thinking of bringing a new puppy into the home.  Research the breed to know as much as you possibly can about caring for them; and research the breeders to be sure you are buying from a reputable Kennel that cares about the breed standard, health and well being of their dogs.  Always remember that it takes as much effort to love and care for a poor example of the breed, as it does to love and care for a good example of the breed.  A good Breeder will be happy to answer any questions you may have; provide information on the breed; and refer you to other breeders if they do not feel that they have the puppy you are searching for.

Time is all important.  New puppies of any breed need socializing, housetraining, and lots of love and support in their new environment.  It is strongly recommended that you introduce your new puppy into the family at a time when there is limited intrusion.  It will give them time to adjust to their new surroundings and new owners in a less stressful environment.  They will need your undivided attention when they arrive as opposed to the attention of the 30 members from the family reunion.
   The
resources needed for puppies homecoming are as varied as your financial resources.  The proper size crate is a must--to keep puppy safe; to keep your golf shoes safe; to assist in housetraining; and to have a safe place for puppy to stay when you have to leave him/her home for limited periods of time.  You will want a puppy lead; stainless steel, or ceramic dishes; the food recommended by the breeder;  some toys to keep him/her company at night; and grooming brushes.
Even if you don't plan on showing your dog, puppy classes are a great way to assist your dog in becoming a well socialized canine citizen--a fun time for you and your dog---and a chance to meet other dog people--which I must add  "Are the greatest people in the World."
Although this is limited information, we hope it has been helpful and we do hope that your next dog experience will be a wonderful one, whatever the breed.
