Dear Colleagues,
Greetings from the Headquarters
I feel privileged to write to you. I am overwhelmed with confidence because of
the dedication of the honorable members to the association with over 400
registrations for the last annual conference, which is really a record. I
learn that my predecessors have been men of great character, quality and
ability. I am thankful to you for the confidence shown by the members on me. I
know that the expectations are high. I hope that I can do justice to the members
and the association.
I am aware that newly elected executive committee members will be the live wire
in the activities of the association. Many of the practicing Orthopaedic
surgeons in Kerala are not members of KOA or IOA. So the priority should go to
the membership campaign. But without your co-operation we cannot achieve this
target. Our strength is in numbers, especially at the national level. At
present only 35% of KOA members are IOA members. We should aim to increase to
100%. The district clubs have a lot to do in this regard. All executive members
should help in hand to hand for the success of the association; this should be a
role model for the country.
Poor people of our nation suffer till death, because they cannot afford costly
surgery like Arthroplasty. We have the expertise to do advanced procedures like
spine surgeries and arthroplasties, but the cost is prohibitory. In future, we
will be increasingly
prevented from determining who will really get the benefit. So in a situation,
where the care is determined by the cost factor, we as surgeons, by virtue of
knowledge and skill have the duty to cure some and console others. I seek your
help and opinion in this regard, what we can do for the poor people of our
nation, who have no money to buy even the implant. I request all the organizing
committees of the future KOA conferences to dedicate at least 1% of their profit
to help the poor. We learned the art of clinical medicine and the basics of
Orthopaedic surgery from poor people, lying on the floor of many teaching
institutions. But what did we give them back, once we all became great surgeons?
We have a detailed protocol for the activities of the association, thanks to the
previous honorary secretary of KOA. It is my request to each one of you to
follow the same, so that, it will not become obsolete. Any changes, if
required, in the protocol can be made in the next annual general body meeting.
Training the young surgeons should be the responsibility of the association.
Many young surgeons after passing out from a teaching institution work in a
small set up and many never improve, from what they have got from the parent
institution. It is my request to the established surgeon to train the young
surgeons at least in short courses.
This letter is from your Honorary Secretary, who has taken charge recently. I
write these words, with sincerity to the core. Hope together we can make our
association strong, self reliant and the best in the world.
Thanking you.
Jai Hind
