March 20, 2005 Games                              Half Time

Wal JL          53          Fec2           51         (27-18)
EBC              55          MCC           46         (29-19)
IEC               56          Wal Jas       40         (25-21)
FEC              72          MPCBC       48         (41-28)
Herald            53          CBCOC      46         (26-19)

Wal JL orders a not so young Ken Chung to take at least 20 shots and he delivers but he must be at home aching in pain right now.  EBC wins with a balanced attack from its guards Jojo, Duc and Andy and center Andrew, while MCC's reliance on the three comes short.  IEC has almost nothing with the long ball game, so Vincensius, Jimmy and Stanley adjust, take the closer shots, for the W.   Pat erupts with 24 in the first half, Bob owns the paint, and FEC has one of those explosive games that make them so dangerous and frustrating to opponents.  With just eight players instead of their usual 10+, Herald gets three players, Angus, Michael, and Johnny in double figures, but the results are the same - they win again.

Fec2 is leading at the half with four players and avoids the forfeit when Jackson and Jack arrive at half time from their once a year all FEC outdoor tournament..  EBC looks awesome the first half but IEC's second half defense wins them the game.  The first half is a shooting fest, but the second half gets ugly as both teams are whistled for fouls, 12 on MPCBC and 10 on Wal JL.  With no players in double figures, CBCOC wins with everyone contributing.  Herald continues to dominate with a quick 20 point lead and four players in double figures: Angus, Michael, Eugene, and Terry.

Karson celebrates his return to the Walnut League with an IEC team high 21 points.  Its tough defense the first half at 18-15, but Gary can't be stopped as MPCBC gets its first victory of the season. Andy ties the game with two treys with two seconds to go, but Jay wins the game on a deuce at the buzzer.  FEC escapes with the win as it watches CBCOC steal the ball and  just miss a lay up at the buzzer.  Herald has the only easy win of the night, building a 17 point lead at the half, and even coach  Danny gets to play a few minutes.

Three in a row, what is the secret of how Fec2 beats FEC?  Jason Lee is a step too fast for MPCBC and Ed Fung comes up with some key baskets.  Jojo hits his first four shots, all treys, Andrew is solid, and Jon delivers 12 second half points to get EBC past CBCOC.  Robert's 19 offsets Billy's 18, but IEC again takes over in the second half.  Herald does it the other way, running off to a big first half lead and then has to survive  a furious FV comeback led by Michael.

Jason Chin gets out of his shooting slump to help MPCBC avenge their first round playoff lost to EBC last season.  Jason Shan and Ryan Chan join Jason Lee in double figures to score a blow out over MCC.  FV keeps fouling, sending FEC to the line for 27 free throw attempts (where they converted only 11).    Herald is actually down at the half but Johnny (10) and Michael (9) have the big second halves to keep the perfect win record.

New addition Hector puts in 14 points in the first half and Gary 10 points in the second to lead MPCBC past Fec2.  Peter returns from his three game injury to help Pat and FEC win to a 4-2 record.  Wal Jas gets to .500 by beating a FV team that can't get untracked from showing up late because of traffic.  Whether its because of their defense or just bad shooting by MCC, CBCOC can't believe they have a 26 point blowout.  Angus hits a game winning trey with seconds to go to keep Herald on top of the standings.

With the balanced shooting of Jason (15), Grey (13), Gary (12) and Peter (9), CBCOC spoils the return from football of a rusty Tim (17) and the last second heroics of Dan (20, including three straight treys in the last minute).  Pat (31) and Jimmy (15) help FEC take advantage over an IEC team missing their entire front line up and ice cold first half three point shooting (only 10 points total in the first half).  Paul fouls out guarding the quick Wal Jas, but it doesn't matter, EBC wins with Jojo (19) and Andrew (12).   MCC holds FV to 12 points in the first half using the great shot blocking and boarding of Kaman and Charles, but are worn down as FV scores 36 in the second half behind Michael (24) and Quoc (12).  While Ken (21) and Mel (18) do their job for Wal JL, they have no help; in contrast Herald has Johnny (15), Ryan (14), Terry (13) and a better supporting cast and predictably the easy win.

FEC is led by Jimmy's 19 points and holds on to third seed with a 6-3 record in a rather easy win over Wal Jas. 25 seconds to go, and CBCOC has the ball for the potential tie or game winner, but is unable to get a good shot off, giving IEC the close win.  Johnny (23), Ken (20), and Nathan (10) are the stars, but it was a team effort in the win over EBC (and the first loss ever for David Chou in Walnut).  It looked physical but most of MPCBC's injuries were from a soft ball game in a win over foul plagued (both Mike and Quoc fouled out) FV.  MCC can't miss (four players in double figures) while Wal JL does miss and its a blow out early on.

Both MPCBC and CBCOC came in with two game win streaks, but a big game from John (19) and consistent Gary (16) offset Jason (22).  With Jimmy (17), Luwin (14), Kevin (12), Peter (11), and Leo (11) having outstanding shooting, FEC leads the entire game, up by double digits with less than two minutes to go when things fall apart - Andrew (10) hits two treys, Andy (24) hits two treys, and then the game winner for EBC when David (25 points in his debut return) rebounds a missed free throw, puts it back in and is fouled for the three point play.    MCC wins their first game behind the great shooting of Robert (21) and the all around play of  Kaman (17), but their team quickness is what surprises Fec2.   FV plays great defense, especially on Melvin (7), but have no answer for Kelvin (24), and Wal JL breaks a three game losing streak.  Stan (23) goes inside while  Marten (19), Karson (13), and Brandon (8), combine for 9 treys and IEC has the big game to end Herald's seven game win streak.

For this game, FEC has Bob's inside game (14), Kevin's speed (12) and Leo's tenacity (12), and MCC can only counter with Benji (15).  Kelvin hits five treys and 8/11 freethrows to lead Wal JL over cold Wal Jas.  MPCBC wins its fifth in a row behind Gary (20) and Jason (19), as Herald is unable to compete after Terry is hurt early in the first half. With four IEC players in double figures- Stan (19), Brandon (17), Billy (17), and Karson (11), its hard to beat them, but Fec2 gives it a good try with Dan (21), Nathan (12) and Jackson (12).  Behind by one point with seconds to go, FV finds Jumbo Quoc Tran open underneath for another one of those exciting finishes that brings heartache for one team and a thrilling high for the other.

Our two high school phenoms, Johnny (20) and Edgar (17), play big parts in this game with the edge going to Fec2.  The big three of EBC, David (19), Jojo (19), and Andy (15), get the win over the big three of FV, Quoc (17), Michael (17), and Jay (14).  Down three with the ball, CBCOC's Jason scores, but its just inside the three line and Walnut JL escapes with the win behind Ken (16).  Kelvin (20) and Melvin (17) have great games but down three with the ball cannot get the shot off at the end, so IEC wins with a balanced team effort led by Karson (15) and Billy (12).  In the second double header of the nite, IEC's Billy is unstoppable in the paint with 30 points, offsetting great games by Hector (22) and Gary (20).  The quick defense of MCC holds Herald to a season low 40 points and just enough offense with the major contributions from Robert (11), Kaman (10), Benji (9), and Keni (8).

Playoff News -

Matchups. Every game will be exciting and anything can happen.  IEC is the clear favorite, but CBCOC played them tough when they met in regular season, losing only by two points.  Stanley (13.9 PPG) has a hurt ankle, so that might be significant.  But IEC still has the league's most dominant center in Billy Min, ranked 4th in PPG at 17.6.  Sagging in the middle is not an answer as IEC also has the league's top three point trio in Karson Cheng (3.0 TPG, ranked 1st), Marten (2.1 TPG) and Brandon (1.6 TPG).  CBCOC also has the outside shooters (Greg Yip, 1.9 TPG, and Jason Jue, 1.6 TPG), a sound center in Henry and a skilled point guard with Gary, but will need a huge offensive output to get the upset win.

Herald faded in their last three games, but no one takes them lightly.  They have the league's top defense, and are led by super smooth Terry Tam (13.8 PPG), reliable Johnny Lam (10.3 PPG), and CCBL three point champion Ryan Chan (1.8 TPG).  Herald beat Fec2 during the regular season, but it would not an upset if Fec2 wins this first round matchup.  Johnny (12.0 PPG) is amazing at point guard for a young high schooler and makes everyone around him better, including three point specialists Ken Ly (11.1 PPG, 2.0 TPG) and Dan Tom (10.4 PPG, 1.9 TPG).  Because they rely so much on the threes, as the treys go, so goes Fec2.   This might be the closest game of the night, but Herald should advance to the next round.

FEC returns as one of our top teams this season, with an offense ranked 2nd in our league.  They feature the league's most explosive shooter in Patrick Yang (19.5 PPG, ranked 3rd), star center Bob Shih (12.7 PPG), and the outside shooting of Jimmy Woo (11.9 PPG).  And at any time Kevin, Peter and Leo can come up with the spectacular high light plays.  This is the one team that Wal JL does not want to meet as they have lost three in a row to them, probably more if we go back farther.  While Wal JL has super star shooters in Kelvin (21.1 PPG), Ken (13.9 PPG), Melvin (12.0) and Keith (10.0), the team is prone to turnovers and ranked last in team defense.  Much to the chagrin of this writer, FEC will be the favored team to win.

Number four MPCBC will have the toughest matchup of the night.  MPCBC had a great season, going 6-4 behind the great play of consistent Gary Lai (16.1 PPG, ranked 5th) and newcomer Hector Lopez (11.3 PPG).  Though they had a tough season at the three point line, MPCBC can light it up at any moment if given some breathing room, and can beat anyone.  They beat EBC regular season, but that was before the return of gifted 6'4 David Chou (23.0 PPG, ranked 1st).  EBC was already dangerous in Jojo Ma (11.6 PPG, 2.6 TPG), Andy Wing (10.3 PPG, 1.7 TPG), and Andrew Lee (10.1 PPG), and now it is even worse for the rest of us.  Good luck MPCBC, you will need it.

Wal Jas and FV will play in a non-playoff post season game.  With this season's additions of Michael Nguyen and Jay Lee, FV has improved in every facet of their game, but this time didn't make the playoffs.  Perhaps blame can be on that one game they lost to Wal Jas when the team showed up late.  Though Wal Jas has always been an entertaining team, they have regressed the last two seasons.  Notwithstanding, the important thing is to have some fun with your guys.

Please note commentary is for fun and not meant to disparage any team or player.  Please let me know if I have stepped over the line.

************************************************************

All teams enter post season play, however only the top eight teams enter the playoffs for a chance to be league champs.  First round of playoff begin July 10.  Second round is July 17.  The third and final round which features the championship game will be July 24.

IEC enters in as top seed.  Herald is the second seed, winning the tie breaker against FEC because of their victory in their head to head regular season matchup.  So FEC will be third seed.  Fourth seed will be MPCBC.  We had a tie for fifth seed, but based on point differentials against the other teams, EBC will be seeded fifth and Wal JL will be seeded sixth.  Fec2 goes in as seventh seed.  Four teams tied for the eighth seed but based again on point differentials between the teams, CBCOC takes it.  Stay tuned for matchup previews...
July 24 Games

Congratulations to Herald, champions of Spring 05 Season.  With IEC starting three players and only getting their fifth player in the late second half, Herald had an easy time scoring in this technically forfeited game.   Johnny Lam (17) and Michael Wong (14) toke advantage of the missing front line of IEC and had game highs for their team.  Terry  (11) and Jason (10) also scored double figures but it was the usual team effort from Herald.  Brandon (26), Karson (15) and Jeff (15) were just outmanned and IEC fails in its quest for their fourth Walnut championship.  Herald gets their first title in its third season with us, but can they repeat?  If they can keep their team intact, their chances look good.

It just toke them some time to gel.  MCC started out the season with a 0-6 record, then went 5-1 including a win over Herald.  So they end the season with a blowout over Fec2.  Robert (25) was on fire as was Kaman (22).  Fec2 was led by Ken (19) and will retool for next season, looking to recapture the magic two season ago when they ended up as number one.
MPCBC was thinking about the 72-48 trouncing they took from FEC way back in March and came into this game with a full court press.  Everyone was hustling, but Gary (12) and Jason (10) led the team in scoring.  FEC was led by Bob (16) and Peter (10)  but lost the game at the charity line as the team went 5/15.  Both MPCBC and FEC will be next season's  prime candidates to take the title away from Herald.

EBC had an easy time behind the dominant play of David (19). No other player scored in double figures, but almost everyone put in points.  As long as David is in the line up, they will win most of their games and potentially go all the way.  Wal JL was missing its top four scorers, so asked Jason Lee (20) to help out and Howard (16) had some nice buckets.

Herald            45            Wal JL           36                 (20-12)

Bob (24) puts up 18 first half points on mostly offensive rebounds to pace FEC to a lead they would never relinquish.  Jimmy adds 14 and FEC finally wins one against Fec2.  Ken scores 12 and Danny scores 13 to lead Fec2.  FEC was whistled for 16 fouls, while Fec2 got called for 12 fouls.  FEC made 6/8 freethrows, while Fec2 made 9/17.  Next week, FEC finishes the season with CBCOC, while Fec2 finishes with EBC.

CBCOC continues their hot shooting from last week, behind Jason (15), newcomer Kevin (15), Greg (13), and Henry (10).  With their big men no showing, EBC only has Jojo (14) in double figures, but has contributions from everyone to keep the game close.  EBC had 18 fouls, while CBCOC had 10 fouls.  From the charity line, CBCOC shot 9/20, while EBC shot 4/7.

For IEC, Stan (18) and Karson (12) get thier team out to the first half lead with ten each.  MPCBC fights back into the game as they connect on six treys in the second half, Joseph (11) getting three, Hector (7) adding two, and Mac (6) getting one.  Its anyone's game with seconds to go, but MPCBC misses their last two shots, and IEC escapes with the win to advance to the championship game next week.  MPCBC had 16 fouls, while IEC had 14 fouls.  MPCBC made 5/12 free throws while IEC made 11/22.  Stan went inside and was sent to the line numerous times but only made 6/14.  Billy didn't show up to the game until ten minutes left in the second half.  MPCBC will complete the season with Wal JL next week.

After getting blown out by Wal Jas in the regular season, MCC gets revenge by posting the five point win.  Robert (15) supplied the points but 6"2 Kaman (10) was huge, blocking numerous shots and was surely the shot block champion of the season.  Wal Jas was led by the high schooler, Edgar (11) and Jason (10).  MCC committed 15 personal fouls, while Wal Jas committed 12.  For freethrows, MCC shot 4/9, while Wal Jas shot 12/23.  This completes the season for Wal Jas, while MCC finishes the season next week with FV.

The refs reward Herald's aggressive defense with tons of steals but punishes the defense of Wal JL with tons of whistled fouls. Herald is sent to the line a nite high of 25 times, where they convert 14.  Wal JL is sent 12 times, mostly in the last few seconds when the game is over, and convert 5.  The difference of 9 freethrows is the difference in the final score as Herald wins 45-36.  With Melvin (9) straddled on the bench due to fouls, and Kelvin (13) having an off night, Wal JL is behind the entire game.  One of the keys to the game was Wal JL getting a T for profanity, which turned into a five point basket for Herald, as they make the foul shots, the T, and then the deuce on the possession.  Michael (10) and Tab (10) led Herald to the win, and will meet three-time champion IEC in the finals next Suinday, in a repeat of last season's finalists.

Herald will come in as the underdog, but have earned the right to meet IEC and can upset.  Congratulations to both Herald and IEC for stellar seasons, it is only fitting that the two best teams in regular season meet for the championship.  (FEC is deserving as well).  Of special note, this will the last game for IEC in our Walnut league, as team members have been finding their Sunday schedule just too busy.  This season we have T-Shirts for the winners.

July 10 Games

MPCBC           55                     EBC             54                (18-27)
Wal JL             56                     FEC             42                (29-17)

Herald              51                     Fec2             45                (25-31)

MPCBC pulls off a major upset upending the much taller EBC by one point.  The starting front line of EBC featured 6'4 David Chou, 6'5 Thomas Dale, 6'0 Andrew Lee, not to mention 6'1 Paul Barber off the bench.  Not one player on MPCBC stands over 5'10.  MPCBC made up for the difference with hustle and team play.  David Chou (19) got EBC off to the first half 27-18 lead with 17 points but for some reason,  David scored only 2 points in the second half.  Hector (21) scored 15 second half points and Jason (8) added 8, getting MPCBC even with EBC in the second half.  With a minute to go, Jon Lee (8) broke open for a transition layup and suddenly MPCBC was up by four points.  Jojo (12) responds with a trey and the lead is one.  MPCBC comes up empty on their possession and with just a few seconds left EBC has the ball with the chance to win or tie.  But MPCBC plays tough D on Jojo and his shot is short at the buzzer.  Congratulations to MPCBC for an astounding display of basketball on both sides of the court.   MPCBC will move on to meet power house IEC and will need to duplicate the same effort to get past them.  When they last met a few weeks ago, they put a lid on the outside shooting of IEC, but had no answer for the inside game of Billy Min.

No need to shed tears for EBC, they already have a few Walnut league championships and will be back again next season trying to collect another one.  Next week, EBC meets CBCOC in our consolation games.

Number three FEC met number six Wal JL in a repeat of last season's first round matchup, and last time FEC beat them 49-39.  This time, Wal JL gets the win, but for good reasons.  The most glaring was FEC missing the services of their number one scorer in Pat Yang who had recorded a 19.5 ppg average.  With Kelvin Zee (27) sizzling from all over the court, and the rest of the guys, Ken (10), Keith (10) and Melvin (9) having decent games, you would have expected a blow out.  An inadvertant horn from the scorer's table led to a wide open trey for Ken.  But actually, FEC was always in the game, and only in the last minute was the win secure.  Jimmy Woo (14) and Peter Chang (10) led FEC, but FEC just missed some of their shots.  Leo had a subpar game, playing hurt with an injured hand, but props go to him for trying to help his team.   FEC will go on to play their sister team Fec2 in our consolation bracket.  Wal JL will move on to tackle another team they have not had success with, Herald.  Will Wal JL be able to again take advantage of a team without their best shooter?  Herald's Terry Tam is out in Hong Kong proposing to his woman and won't be back until next season.

CBCOC was on fire the entire game, scoring 36 points in the first half and another 30 points in the second half.  The only problem was that IEC put in 44 points in the second half.  For CBCOC, Greg Yip  (28) was the man, with 11 in the first half then another 17 in the second half.  Gary (11) also was outstanding wowing the crowds with spectacular assists and shots.  Jason (11) chipped in three treys and Henry (8) was great in the post.  IEC went to the trey and their prayers were answered, as both Brandon (20) and Karson (23) each had six treys.  Stan (15) also added one trey but was more effective on drives to the hoop.  Billy (12) attracted all the attention freeing the shooters.  We had great games all night, and this one was the best, some very fine basketball from some very skilled fellows.  CBCOC will meet EBC next week.  Meanwhile, IEC takes their act to MPCBC, which promises to be another big shoot out, with treys raining from all over the gym.

In our nonplayoff game of the night, Walnut Jason just pummeled FV.  Without team leader Jay Lee, FV played some pretty ugly basketball.  In contrast, Wal Jas looked like, well if you could compare this to the show Beauty and the Beast, then Wal Jas was a beauty.  It was 34-10 at the half, and I am glad that FV took their beating like men, finished the game, forgot about it, and went out for some fun at Maxim's.  Jason Lee (18) led Wal Jas with layups that were just blurs up and down the court while Hanley (15) had his best game for this team swishing the soft jumpers.  Ryan (12) impressed the ref and the ref thought perhaps Ryan could play JC basketball.  Andy added 10, Ed 6, Edgar 4 and Preston had a pretty layup.  For FV, Michael had a few highlights to tally 16, Jumbo added 9, but thats about it for FV.  These two teams have dates with MCC in the next two weeks for further nonplayoff bracket games.

Number two seed Herald potentially had a problem without their main man Terry (13.8 ppg), out in Hong Kong for two weeks.  But Fec2 was also in trouble, without Ken Ly, Nathan, Tim, Jordan and Dan.  For Herald, Michael who had averaged 5.6 points for this season, stepped up, forgetting the treys, and went strong to the hoop for 18 points.  The rest of Herald was pretty balanced, with all players scoring between 2-6 points.  Leave any of them open and they make you pay.  Fec2 lead for some parts of the game, but the team game worked for Herald as they advance to round two next week with an appointment with Wal JL.  Fec2 had to call upon subs Danny Do (11) and Clarance Yeung (15) to fill in for all the missing, and they did well leading the team.  Johnny (8) had a tough nite as his jumper was just a bit wide, but he has many years of great basketball ahead.  Fec2 will try to find enough players to meet FEC in next week's consolation bracket game.  There is a bit of a personal rivalry there so it should be fun.
