Pat (25) returns to lead a hot shooting FEC past EBC.  Arnold (26) returns to lead a now very quick Fec2 past CBCOC. Wal JL Melvin (24)  pounds the inside on his fellow church members at FV. In the second game of a Wal JL double header, Keith (23) gives a rude welcome to Sunrise.  Amazingly, Wal Jas holds Herald to only five points in the second half and presents a win in Ryan's (7 points, including a dunk) second to last game with us.  Our prayers go with Ryan Chan as he leaves sunny California for a new job up north.

Fec2 has little trouble with the MPCBC press and Johnny (16) and Ken (14) break down the man defense, though Gary (14) and Jason (14) keep the game close.  Wal Jas is in the zone with a career high 9 triples in the first half, Tim (11) and Nick (9) getting three each, and CBCOC, led by Jason (16), is taken out early.  With the regulars out, FV puts together a mixed team featuring Ivan (13), Ted (12) and Steven (10), that is still too much for an offense-challenged Sunrise team that is in for a long season.  With Michael (17) connecting on three treys in the first half to keep the game close, Herald then wears down the elder EBC in the second half, as their 6'3 twin towers King (10) and Eugene (5) help keep 6'4 David (13) in check.

David Chou (26) puts in 19 first half points and Jojo (17) connects from outside to get EBC the big lead that would get as much as 30 points before Fec2 makes some treys by Jeff (17) for a more respectable lost.  Jason Lee (22) and newcomer Matt (12) have good games, but with Wal Jas shooting blanks from three land (2 for 15 in the second half), FEC just wins as Peter (17) and Jimmy (10) lead the way.  MPCBC gets the win over Wal JL and Kelvin (30) behind their press and the sure hand of Gary Lai (27).  Gary Nguyen (22) scores and Jason Jue (14) gets the rare four point play to get CBCOC the lead with seconds to go, but Herald ties it up and wins in OT behind Johnny Lam (19), newcomer Wilson (17) and Mike (10).

MPCBC      63           Sunrise          42          (34-18)
Herald        45            Wal JL          34          (26-16)

Both teams show their offensive skills, but the 9-5 difference in  treys pretty much seems to be  the reason for the Fec2 win over FEC.   A blistering first half by EBC- Andy (11), David (10), Duc (10), and Jojo (7) - takes out Wal Jas in the first half.  FV gets big outputs from Mike (17), Jay (13), Huy (11) and Jumbo (10), while CBCOC has only Jason (15) and Greg (13), so match goes to FV.  MPCBC's  John (17) and Joe (14) along with Gary (12) enjoy the easy pickings of Sunrise.  Mike (15) and Herald's press suffocates the too slow Wal JL.

Edgar's (14) inside presence helps keep Fec2 at bay in this contest of our two quickest teams.  With Joseph forced to play hurt, and only Hector (25) making shots, MPCBC is no match for EBC's David (30), Duc (16) and Jojo (15).  Kelvin (21) hits a trey at the buzzer to take the game into OT, where Wal JL finally takes the lead and win over FEC.  CBCOC adds some new players but it is Peter (23) who comes up big and easily gets past hapless Sunrise.  FV can match Herald's speed in this game of cold shooting, or is it defense?, and FV wins the upset, with only Jumbo (11) in double figures for the two teams.

It took a whole first half to get used to a new team for CBCOC missing some regulars, while FEC has its normal line up and wins behind Peter (14) and Kevin (14).  The Zee brothers, Kelvin (30) and Howard (12), work together to just get Wal JL past a fiesty Fec2 led by Jack's (13) four treys.  EBC shows up with ten veterans, including David (21), to continue the season long education for Sunrise on how to play basketball.  Jumbo is out injured and FV's  three game winning streak is snapped by Wal Jas behind the sharp shooter Tim (17) and too quick Jason (15).

Ken (20) connects on six treys, Arnold (20) adds two more, and Jamal (13) another one and Fec2 crushes an out of synch FV, led by Ivan (11) and Jay (10).  Jason (14) and newcomer Albert (12) score, and the the D of MPCBC allows no Wal Jas player to score double figures.  Without David, EBC uses their potent outside game (Andy 22, Duc 15, and Jojo 12) but Wal JL takes the win behind Brandon (18), Kelvin (14) and Melvin (12).  FEC has the two point lead and the ball with less than 30 seconds to go, but Herald steals the inbounds pass and Terry (26) hits the trey to put Herald on top.  Johnny added (10) for Herald, while FEC was paced by Pat (17), Peter (17) and Bob (15).

MPCBC goes to the charity line 21 times and while they just cash in on 10 of them, and that with their advantage in threes, is enough to get them past FEC.  Hector (14), newcomer Phong (12) and Gary (10) lead MPCBC while Bob (18) and Peter (14) are top guns for FEC.  EBC blows out to a 47-16 first half lead and the win is in the bag, though CBCOC gets within 9 in the second half.  For EBC, its David (37), Jojo (14), Duc (14) and Andrew (12) doing the damage, while for CBCOC its Kyle (23) and Peter (18).  Its a repeat in the next game as Wal Jas runs out to a 36-9 first half lead over Sunrise.  Matt (20) and Andy (14) do it for Wal Jas and coach Terry (25) is all Sunrise has.  Herald jumps out to a narrow 26-20 cushion at the half, and just hangs on to win over Fec2.  The points are spread evenly for Herald with Johnny (10) in double figures, while Fec2 is lead by newcomer Jamal Marks (19) and Arnold (10).

MPCBC builds a quick double digit lead behind John Huynh (17) and Gary Lai (20), but CBCOC makes a dramatic comeback in the last minutes and Jason Jue (16) is Mr Clutch, sinking the game winner, a trey from the baseline.  Jay Lee (14) is the go to man as he hits what looks like might be the winning shot, but there are 15 seconds left, and Jimmy Woo (15) answers at the buzzer with a trey again from the baseline, and FEC just beats FV.  With Edgar stopping the inside game of Wal JL and the three game of Wal Jas on - Andy (15) with three, Nick (10), with two, and one each from Hanley and Tim,  Wal Jas has its first win ever over Kelvin (31) and Wal JL.  Mike (18) and Johnny (14) lead a wave of Herald shooters to spank Sunrise, though Sunrise looks decent on the offensive end, scoring their most points ever in our Walnut League.

Both teams are missing their star centers, but its obvious FV has no chance without theirs as they are crushed by EBC.  EBC is led by 14 apiece from Duc and Andy.  CBCOC plays the spoiler again as they knock Wal JL out of the running for top seed (they did it last week to MPCBC).  Newcomer Kota (10) leads a balanced CBCOC point talley.   Peter (16), Bob (14), and Pat (13) pace FEC as they put the hurt to our rookie Sunrise team.  MPCBC shows their stuff with 11 treys and a superb defensive gem as they ruin Herald's bid to be the outright top seed.  Gary (15) and Mac (11) are the top shooters but it was a team effort for MPCBC.

Team Stats and Scoring Leaders
Playoffs Begin Soon...

Seeds will be set after all teams complete nine games.  The tenth game will be purely for fun.  The top eight teams will compete in playoffs, and whoever wins three games will be the champion.  With Herald's lost to MPCBC Oct 16, there is a jam for top seed which will be awfully complicated for me to figure out, especially if MPCBC wins again Oct 23.  In fact, there is not much difference in the top eight seeds.  It looks like the race for the champion of this season is wide open ... another season of parity.    Even CBCOC which missed the playoffs by one game and the lost to FV was really just as good as everyone else.  We should know more next week as far as seeds go, but I don't think we can know who will be the champion until the last game ends.

This coming Sunday features MPCBC vs FV and Fec2 vs Sunrise which will bring all teams to the nine game completion.  Fec2 will almost certainly beat Sunrise, bringing their record to 5-4.  What will happen between MPCBC and FV is anyone's guess.
Stay tuned for further developments...
Nov 6 Games

Wal Jas, MPCBC, EBC and FEC advance.  Defending champion Herald is taken out.  So we will be crowning a new champion in two weeks.  Only two teams will be left standing after next week.  Who will it be?  EBC and FEC have won the title before, but never in a playoff series.  Wal Jas and MPCBC are hungry and want that taste of championship and the bragging rights that go with it.  Stay tuned.

Wal Jas            59             Fec2            54              (30-30)
MPCBC            58             Wal JL         45              (30-29)
EBC                 31              FV              21              (17-14)
FEC                  56            Herald           44              (30-24)

Jason (18) and Andy (16) put the ball in the hoop and Edgar's inside defense makes the difference for Wal Jas as ten treys (four each from Jack and Ken) from Fec2 is not enough.  Brandon (23) doesn't get enough help as Wal JL and their awful freethrows falls to MPCBC and their outstanding trio of Jason Chin (18), Hector (16), Gary (13).  Its ugly, but EBC will take the win as Andy (15) for EBC and Jay (12) for FV are the only ones who are able to score. Jimmy (15) and Pat (22) come out shooting aggressively and FEC prevents Herald from repeating as champions.

Kyle (22) catches fire in the last minutes to bring CBCOC to a tie with FEC, but Luwin rebounds the missed shot and hits the winning shot at the buzzer.  Wal Jas prevails over EBC behind the inside play of Edgar (13) and the scoring of Tim (19) and Jason (12).  These first two games will not count in the playoff seedings, as the regular season ends after everyone plays nine games.  Hector (14) and Gary (12) are the double point scorers as MPCBC upends the bigger FV led by Jumbo (16).  Fec2 finally gets past a winless but game Sunrise; Ken, Jackson, and Jamal each have 12 for Fec2, while Sunrise is led by Henry (12) and Evan (10).   This completes the regular season and playoffs begin in two weeks.

With a dazzling display of both offense and defense over Walnut Jason,  MPCBC will be one of the teams playing for the championship this Sunday.  Hector was the hot hand the first half, shredding the 3-2 zone defense with 14 points including two treys.  Joseph contributed two treys and Jason Chin added another.  Gary had five, Wally had two free throws, and John chipped in with four points, totaling a big 33 point first half.  Down by 15 points, Wal Jas switched to a man defense for the second half.  But it was no help.  MPCBC adjusted with Gary playing the post, and there was no one who could stop him, as he came up with 14 second half points.  John also liked the man defense as he came up with 10 second half points.  Jason added four.  Wal Jas had a great season, getting their best record to date and look like their time may soon be coming.  But not this season.  They were able to stay with MPCBC for the first five minutes with three consecutive treys from Tim and another from Jason, but after that it got ugly for them, scoring only six more points in the last 15 minutes of the first half, and looking at a 33-18 half time deficit.  They managed to play pretty even with MPCBC in the second half, but that of course was not what was needed.  Jason Lee led his team with 17 and Tim added 13.  Congratulations to Wal Jas for a fine season.  MPCBC will move on to see what the future holds for them in next week's championship game.

During the regular season, FEC posted a big win over EBC but that was with Pat, and tonight they would not have his services.  And too bad they had to meet EBC when their shooters were on fire.   45 first half points!  EBC has done this already two times in the regular season, but that was with Daivd.  Jojo Ma would come up with five treys for this game, with three of them in the first half.  If it was just him shooting that would be manageable, but what you going to do when everyone on EBC is making shots?  Andrew was unusually aggressive tonight, coming up with 15 first half points.  And then both Kent and Paul added a trey each.  Duc was also on, putting in two treys and a deuce for 8 first half points.  Harrison added two.  Despite the offensive barrage of EBC, FEC was only down 13 at the half, as Jimmy paced FEC with 13 first half points including three treys.  But EBC continued their hot shooting in the second half and just cruised, getting up by as much as 20 points.  Jojo ended up with 23 points, Andrew 21, Duc 10, Harrison 9, Paul 7 and Kent who had to leave early (he was on call) ended with three.  For FEC, Jimmy had the nice touch with 20, Peter completed a fine season with 17, Bob had 10, Kevin 8, Gary 5 and Luwin with 4.  Congratulations to FEC, another impressive season as one of our league's top teams.  EBC will move on to meet MPCBC for the championship game.  It should be a monster game.

Video highlights of these two semifinal games should be posted up sometime this week.

In a non playoff game, CBCOC prevailed over Sunrise in  a close game 51-47.  With Terry playing major minutes in the first half, the two teams were tied up at 22 all.  For CBCOC, Peter led his team with 16, Henry had 14, and Darren had 11.  Sunrise played their best game of the season, led by  Terry with 14 and Edward with 11.  For next season, CBCOC will look to get back into the playoffs and Sunrise should be better.

In a consolation game, Herald and Fec2 locked horns in an overtime game with Herald finally winning 67-61.  Terry led Herald with 26 and Eugene had his best game ever, exploding for 19.  Fec2 had to borrow Peter Chang, which is allowable in post season non championship games, and Peter put in 18.  Jamal led Fec2 with 20 and Jack contributed 14.  Herald will return next season as a pre season pick to challenge for the top spot.  Fec2 will spend the off season looking for a consistent lineup in order to compete at the top.

Congratulations to EBC, Summer/Fall 2005 Walnut League Champions.

Last season, MPCBC knocked EBC out of the playoffs with a 55-54 win.  This time EBC wins, as they come out quick and MPCBC comes out a little flat, missing their shots for the first six and a half minutes.

At the 13:30 mark, EBC had run out to a 12-0 start, with Andrew scoring 5, David 4 and Jojo a trey.  MPCBC then called a time out and came out with a full court press and quickly scored 4 points by Gary and John.  EBC then called time out at 12:43 and soon David scored another deuce, for a 14-4 lead.  But then David got into trouble, picking up three quick fouls, one on a double technical and another on an offensive foul and was forced to the bench for the remainder of the half.  Meanwhile, Gary connected on four straight free throws to get MPCBC within 14-8.  The teams exchanged baskets with Harrison for EBC and John for MPCBC.  Next, Henry from EBC hit a deuce and then Andrew stole the ball going coast to coast to up the lead 20-10.  Jason scored a basket and two free throws in the last minutes of the first to pull MPCBC within 20-14.

In the second half, David got an offensive rebound and a three point play at 19:31 and EBC was up 23-14.  A minute later, Mac got MPCBC to 23-16.  EBC then scored eight straight points, first a trey from Duc, then a three point play from David and another two free throws from David.  At 14:08, Gary got David to commit his fourth foul sending him to the bench again, and MPCBC then scored 8 straight points over the next four minutes to pull within 31-24, six from Gary and two from Hector.  At 9:26, Jojo hit a big trey, then Gary quickly answered with a deuce and the score was 34-26.  The two teams then exchanged treys, first another from Jojo, then Gary, then Paul, and then Hector, ending up 40-32 at the 4:07 mark.  No scoring occured again until 2:44 when Andrew hit a deuce, answered by Francis with a deuce, and then a deuce from Harrison.  It was 44-34 and David returned.  But Jason hit a trey and it was 44-37 at 1:38.  At 1:20, Jojo was sent to the line where he connected on the first free throw, missed the second, but David got the rebound for a deuce and EBC was now up 47-37.  Hector quickly got a trey at 1:10, but Jojo connected on two more free throws as did David, and MPCBC could not score again and finally called the game with twenty seconds left.  Though the speed and press of MPCBC caused major problems for EBC, MPCBC could not overcome the bad start.  The height difference was major as well, with a rebounding difference of 32-20 and no one to counter the 6'4 gifted David.   A ferocious game, both teams are to be commended for their smart, skillful and hard play.

Unable to contain David and Jojo, and having an extremely off shooting night, MPCBC loses to EBC (see next box for recap).  With 21 treys between the two teams, it comes down to a 4-2 score in an OT win for FEC over CBCOC.  FV ends the season on a positive note with an easy win over an improved but still needing more help Sunrise.  One second left is all Herald has left to tie or win the game, but the shot is wide and Wal Jas comes out with the win.
