In the playoffs, anything can happen.  One single game can change the status of a whole season.  A team blown out in one game can come back and return the favor.  I think we can honestly say that in our league, there is parity.  The top seven teams are pretty much even.  Would anyone argue that if we did this all again, we would get different results?  Be that as it may be, this season is history and we are left with these facts.

Fec2 will go on the books as the champion of this season.  Relying on outside shooting and opportune fast breaks, Fec2 was able to win three straight playoff games in dominating fashion.  The last time Fec2 and FEC met, Fec2 was cold and FEC was hot.  This time was the opposite.  Jerome hit the first shot on the first possession and Fec2 never looked back.  With Arnold hitting three treys and Rob getting four transition layups, the early lead went to 10-2, and after ten minutes it climbed to 21-4.  Defense was big as Fec2 played an aggressive man to man, while FEC used a very soft man to man.  It was 28-14 at the half.  FEC was able to score more in the second half, but Fec2 kept the cushion at 15 points and FEC was never able to threaten.  Congratulations to the fourth seeded Fec2, who ended the regular season at 5-4, but took out the numbers one and three seeded teams, to go 3-0 in the playoffs.  For Fec2, Ken scored 4, Danny scored 8, Jackson scored 2, Jerome scored 4, Arnold took MVP with 20, Rob scored 10, and Tim scored 7.  They hit 7 treys and connected on 4/11 at the charity line.  For FEC, Bob had 5, Kevin had 2, Pat had 10, Jimmy had 11, Nathan had 8, Peter did not score and Luwin had 2.  As a team, FEC had three treys and made 7/16 free throws.  FEC may have lost the game, but they had a fine season, with the best overall record of all our teams.

Number 7 seeded Walnut Jason can lay claim to third place, via their first win ever against EBC.  While they have always had the advantage of youth over age, their lack of experience showed, up until the later part of this season.  They finally grew up and played to their potential, taking advantage of their speed yet finally playing like a team, with contributions from everyone. Captain Jason Lee chose to start himself on the bench and Walnut Jas ran out to a 24-19 first half lead.  The ball was evenly spread, with Brian scoring 5, Jason Shan scoring 8, Ken scoring 9, Preston did not score, Ryan scoring 2, Andy coming up big with 10, Eric scoring 6, and Jason Lee scoring 12.  They hit three treys and made 1/5 free throws.  There is room for improvement on this team and perhaps next season they will continue to grow.  Again, EBC was hurt without the presence of key players, Paul had 2, Glenn had 7, Andrew had 12, Jojo had 12, Linc did not score, Keith had 4, and Kent had 6.  They had five treys and attempted no free throws. EBC also is to be congratulated on having a fine overall season.

The third team of the evening to get revenge on a regular season lost is MPCBC over CBCOC1.  Last time, MPCBC couldn't throw a pea into the ocean, it was so bad.  This time, they were on fire.  They led 43-30 at the half.  Everyone on MPCBC was hitting, while CBCOC only had Ryan.  Ryan was unstoppable, making 32 points, a season high.  But all five MPCBC players were in double figures, the two Huynh brothers, John and Joseph matched each other with 14 points, Whalen had 13, Jason had 12 and Gary in the zone with 21.  As a team, MPCBC had nine treys and 11/15 free throws.  For CBCOC, Ryan had 32, Reuel had 9, Gary had 5, Jason had 9, Keith did not score, and David had 2.  They made six treys and 3/5 free throws.  Congratulations to both teams on fine seasons and they look to get even better the next one.

Terry finally played a complete post season game for Herald and led them to victory over Wal JL, despite a stellar offensive effort by Kelvin Zee.  It was the closest game of the nite and tied at the half 26 all.  Down a few points with a minute to go, Wal JL sent Herald to the line repeatedly and had a chance to tie or win the game with a second to go, but their desparation shot at the buzzer went wide.  Newcomer Jonny led Herald with 19 points, Terry had 16, Tab had 10, Joe did not score, David had 2, Donald had 4, Jason had 2, and Angus had 7.  They hit only one trey and 5/16 free throws.  Kelvin led Walnut with 30, Tony had 11, Jimmy had 3, Andrew did not score, Jeff scored 10, and Quinten had 2.  Wal JL had 4 treys and made 14/20 free throws.

Playoff MVP: Arnold Koh, Fec2.  Season MVPs: Tim Kim, Fec2, Pat Yang, FEC, Jason Lee, Wal Jas, Jojo Ma, EBC, Joseph Huynh, MPCBC, Ryan Dayala, CBCOC1, Terry Tam, Herald.

Referees for the evening were Ton and David, from Johnny's crew.  They did a good job.  I play in other leagues and I believe we have the best crew.  True, they can't see everything, but overall, I am happy with them, so I have decided to continue with them for our Walnut league.  I remain open to your comments.

Preview of Nov 14 Games.

EBC and Fec2 hadn't seen each other since Sept 19 when EBC won 45-40.  Today, number 4 Fec2 comes away with the upset over number one seeded EBC and earns the right to play for the championship this sunday.  Jerome scored a deuce, Danny scored 6  Jackson tallied 7, Tim earned 12, Arnold 14 and Ken 15.  Down 21-22 at the half, they had a big 33 point second half to take the game.  Credit also goes to a tenacious man to man defense.  They connected on eleven free throws and hit five treys for a balanced attack.  EBC was hurt without two of their starters David and Andy and just ran out of steam against the quick tempo of the younger Fec2.  Andrew put up 17, Jojo 13, Jon 9, Robert 5, and Paul 2.

FEC came with its guns and probably remembered their blowout win Aug 29 against Walnut Jason.  But this was to be a different game.  Walnut Jason came out with a stingy man to man D, holding Pat, Jimmy,  and Nathan scoreless for the first half.  But FEC still had Bob in the middle, picking up all the missed shots, scoring 13 points. The score was 19 all at the half.  Nathan became aggressive in the second and scored 10 and a few shots finally fell through for Pat as he scored 8, his season low.  With less missed shots to rebound, Bob scored another 4 points to end with 17.  Kevin had 7, Jimmy ended with 2 and Peter contributed 5.  Eric led Wal Jas with 11, including two treys and should have shot more as he went 4/4 from the field.  Jason Lee had 10 shooting 4/15 had four turnovers, and fouled out.  Jason Shan shot 4/6 from the field and 0/3 from the charity line, all in the second half due to foul trouble, and ended up with 9 points.  Ken shot 2/7 for 8 points.  Preston missed his one attempt but had a big time block on Pat.  Andy missed his four attempts.  Ryan didn't get much looks, shooting 2/2 for four points, and fouled out. Brian made his one attempt for two points and also had two huge blocks.

The championship game pits #3 FEC against #4 Fec2.  They met last Oct 17 with Pat and Jimmy doing the damage and leading FEC to a dominating 53-37 win. Based on this lopsided win, FEC looks to win again.   Fec2 won't be able to run on FEC so they will need to hit their threes and consider a man to man D.  The level of play in our Walnut league has gone up over the last few seasons and FEC has also, with the addition of Pat a season or two ago and the addition of Nathan this season, to the already good nucleus of Jimmy, Kevin, Bob and Peter.  Fec2 will need a huge game to steal an upset.  They are capable of it.  On any given night, Jackson, Ken, Arnold, Danny, Jerome, Tim and Rob can score.

Walnut Jason and EBC will play for third and fourth place.  When they met Oct 3, EBC squeaked by with a 56-53 win, and that was with a full team.  This game looks to be an upset.  At center, Ryan should outplay Paul 10-2.  At the power forward spot, Andrew will outscore Jason S 14-11.  At the other forward, Ken has the advantage over the younger Jon 10-7.  Both teams are two guard strong, and Jojo will outscore Jason 17-13.  At the passing guard spot, Andy Wing if he comes will have the advantage over Preston 10-2.  The bench of Wal Jas is much stronger, with Andy, Eric and Brian vs Linc, Kent, Keith and Robert 11-4.  I don't expect David to show.  Prediction: 57-54, Wal Jas by 3.  But I could be wrong.

MPCBC and CBCOC1 will play for 5th and 6th place.  MPCBC led the entire game against Herald, unlike the last time, when it took sudden death to get past them.  At the half MPCBC led 23-22.  Jon had 2, Jason had 5, John was in fould trouble and did not score, Joseph led with 20, newcomer Gary contributed 12, and Wally had 13.  As a team they hit four treys and connected on 14/20 free throws.  Herald had three treys and hit 9/20 free throws.

CBCOC1 enjoyed an easy game against our league's weakest defensive team, Walnut Hanley.  David had 8, Ryan had 22, Reuel had 11, Gary had 6, Keith had 7, and Peter had 8.  As a team, they had six treys and connected on 2/4 free throws.  Very commonly, the league's weekly high scorer will usually be from the team that played Walnut Hanley and this week's benefactor was Ryan.  For Walnut Hanley, Howard had 16, Hanley had 15, newcomer Tim S had 13, newcomer Min had 6, while Tim T and Loren W did not score.  Walnut Hanley had eight treys and did not shoot any freethrows.
When MPCBC and CBCOC1 last met on Aug 29, CBCOC1 enjoyed one of its finest outings, with a 64-42 victory.  Four players on C1 were in double figures while MPCBC was stone cold.  Their cold shooting probably had something to do with the presence of Ryan.  With no true center on their team MPCBC is at a definite disadvantage.  It could be that their last game was just a fluke.  If the outside shots start falling, then it is anyone's game.  Should be an exciting game to watch.

The opponent for Herald is still to be determined.  Herald has fallen on hard times since their fast start.  They looked very intimidating their first seven games, including a win over FEC, the only team to do that.  But worn out over their involvement with the CAAA and CCB leagues, they have watered down their 6-1 start to now a 7-4 record. Playing the weaker teams in our league this week should give them a win and a positive note to end this season on.

Oct 10 Games

FEC, led by an unstoppable Pat,  is on fire in the second half, as it extends a tight 28-25 half time lead to stop EBC's 8-0 win streak.  Ryan returns from his injury and inspires Jason and Keith to bust out the threes to the delight of C1 fans.  Jason Lee finds the soft touch and Wal Jas upsets MPCBC despite a break out performance by Jason Chin (six treys).   The Walnut rims are also kind to Fec2 as they just can't miss, especially Tim and Arnold who round out our top five gunners for the evening.

Nov 7 Games

Playing man to man, Fec2 knocks off #1 seed with Ken, Arnold, and Tim doing the most damage.   FEC is surprised by the resurregent Wal Jas (three blocked shots including an amazing one by Preston) but maintains their course for the championship game.  C1 finds lots of opportunities to shoot and Ryan enjoys a three and a dunk.  Joseph leads MPCBC and entertains their fans with a convincing win.

Oct 24 Game Results

EBC maintains about a five point lead throughout the game and puts it away in the final five minutes.  David decides to add a little D to his game, and his blocked shots leads to some easy transition baskets for Jojo and Andy.  FEC builds a 36-23 half time lead behind Jimmy and Pat and withstands a 19 point second half outburst by Jason.  #7 Wal Jas uses the balanced attack of Jason, Ken and Ryan to earn the only upset of the nite, a very impressive win against a quality team.  Fec2 finds its shooting touch again, Danny connecting on six treys and Tim with two, to win in a surprisingly easy game.

Previews

EBC and Herald have cinched the number one and two spots for the league and will meet in two weeks for bragging rights of first place.  FEC owns the number 3 spot and in two weeks will meet either MPCBC or Fec2 or C1, depending on how Fec2 and C1 do this week.

If Fec2 wins, they play FEC again for third place, if they lose and C1 wins, we will have a three way tie for spot 4.  This will make it complicated to figure out who should play FEC for third place as the three teams are all 1-1 in head to head meetings.  What should we do to determine spot 4?  Maybe we will just wait and see how things turn out this week.

Wal Jas owns the number 7 spot and will meet either Wal JL or C2, depending on the results of this week.

The new season is coming and exacts dates will be out soon.   Let me know if you want to enter a team.  We  already have a request from Fountain Valley 1 for a spot. Hope everyone is having fun despite the heartache of losing sometimes.  Let me know any suggestions you have.
Aug 29 Games

FEC's inside game with Bob and outside shooting of Jimmy and Pat and Nathan's defense spell an easy win.  CBCOC1 finds the winning formula in Reuel's seven treys and Ryan's shot blocks.  EBC continues to do what has worked - get the ball to David.  Fec2 runs up and down the court shooting and having fun.

Preview of Oct 24 and the Playoff Tournament

For the first time in Walnut Basketball history, we will have playoffs.  The top eight teams will meet in a three game tournament with the championship and bragging rights going to the team that ends up with three Ws.

EBC is the favorite, coming in with the best record.  The question is whether David will show up.  If he doesn't, then EBC will have to depend on the outside shooting of Jojo, Andy and Jon, and the inside offense of Andrew.  Still pretty good, but they will need David to go all the way.  The small gym at Walnut is a plus for our senior team, especially for Paul, and every season they have been one of the top teams.  Kent, Keith, Lincoln, and Rob understand the game and are experienced and calm. They should have no trouble, even without David, this first week against #8 Walnut JL.

Herald is seeded number two.  While EBC is a walk up half court team, Herald is the exact opposite.  They employ a pressure defense, often man to man, that quickly gets out on the fast break.  But they may be too tired from all the games they play on Sundays, because of their involvement with the CAAA and their own CCB League.  Super smooth Terry with his all around game and power forward Mike with his leaping skills are the stars, but they will need a total team effort to take three wins.  With the largest roster, Herald seems to have an endless supply of talented players.  They have a tough first round matchup against #2 Wal Jas, whom they lost to in their last game. But if their stars show up and they are not tired, Herald is the favored team.

Number three seeded FEC has the distinction of being the only team to beat EBC this season.  Not counting their forfeit game, they are on a seven game winning streak, and appear to have everything needed to take the championship.  Pat is the center piece of their offense, with the ability to shoot the three, or the midrange, and the drive to the hoop.  Jimmy is also dangerous and can score when FEC goes to him.  Bob is strong in the middle and picks up a lot of offensive putbacks.  Nathan is the premier defensive player of our league and there is probably no one in our league that can score much against him.  Peter and Kevin always have some highlight moves, and Luwin can hit the trey.  However, #6 MPCBC will probably bring in their whole team and there is no sure bet FEC will get past them.

We had a tie with 5-4 records for three of our teams.  However, Fec2 owns the tiebreaker with differentials in points in head to head meetings, and so are the #4 seed.  Fec2 has done a fine job in their first season with us and probably their first together as a team.  Jackson called in his pals from his UCLA AACF days and they have had lots of fun.  They have won big in quite a few games.  Everyone on their team has had big games, so they are comfortable with sharing the rock with each other.  Arnold Koh and Tim Kim have consistently been their top guns.  Fec2 is another one of our teams who prefer the uptempo run and gun game, and are not shy about bombing away from three point land.  They tend to have trouble with teams that emphasize defense.  In their previous meeting with CBCOC1, they won big, but Ryan Dayala was absent that game.  Fec2 will need Jerome to counter.  This first round match up could go either way.

CBCOC1 has been together many years and was one of the first teams in our league when we started about eight years ago.  They hold the distinction of winning our first championship.  Captain Jason Jue has been through it all and the friendships they have had in their teams are envyable.  The first thing you will notice on CBCOC1 is the talented center Ryan who stands around six foot six.  Dominant in the middle, sometimes CBCOC1 just stands around and expects Ryan to do it all, hurting their defense.  On offense, because he can shoot the three, he will go outside and have some fun.  But CBCOC1 is at their best when he stays inside.  Ryan tends to tire in the second half.  Reuel Chan is probably the best three point shooter in our league (maybe in all of California) and could average easily twenty points if he wasn't so unselfish.  A power forward would be helpful.  If Jason, Gary, Keith, Greg, Peter and the rest of the guys are on, they could make a run, but its an uphill battle for them.

The two most exciting games this season are owned by MPCBC.  In one game, they came back and beat Fec2 at the buzzer with a three.  In a game with Herald, they came back from double digits to tie and then win in sudden death.  They almost did it again when the ball rimmed out in a two point loss to Wal Jas.  MPCBC is a veteran team and one of the top teams from the PTABA league, where they are called Rice N Crackers.  Their trouble this season has been to field their full roster to their games, but expect the opposite for post season play.   While they don't have a dominant center, everyone on their team can shoot and they love the three.  Joseph, Garrett, and Jason have all had big games this season, though all the players have skills.  But FEC is a tough match up for them.  MPCBC will need high percentage shooting to get past them.

Wal Jas has gotten better over the season and are capable of beating anyone.  They beat #2 Herald and barely lost to a full roster EBC.   Why the improvement?   The biggest help has been adding 6-3 Ryan in the middle because he keeps teams from pounding it inside on them, and gives them a possible offensive rebound, a weakness in their past seasons.  Jason continues to run the full court and has one of the best finishes in the league, but he has also learned to pass the ball more, a complaint of some of his teammates in the past.  Adding Ken Chung has been pivotal and Ken had a big game in the upset over Herald last sunday.  Jason Shan has improved his shooting, seemingly physically a little stronger in his thin frame.  Eric and Brian Slinghuff have signed on to give them quality at the power forward spot.  Andy is capable and Preston is a good role player.  The odds are against them but the pieces are there and the young are gifted with the belief they can do anything.

Walnut JL is seeded last at number eight and are probably in over their heads.  While star shooter Kelvin has led the league a few times in highest scores, the rest of the team has been inconsistent.  Tony is solid in the front line but is overused due to lack of subs.  Jeff is probably frustrated with this team, after having fielded his league dominating IEC team the last two seasons.  Walnut JL has called upon Melvin Lim and Brandon Kwok to help out but Brandon is probably out because of the CAAA league where he plays on Teo Chow with EBC's David Chou. A recreational division would have been better suited for Wal JL.  They will be lucky to win one game in the post season and should just try to have some fun.

In fact, everyone should have fun.  Winning is good, but that passes with time.  Our reputations, character and friendships will last a lot longer.  You guys have been great.  Thanks for making our Walnut League so sweet.

Oct 3 Games

FEC rides a 29-16 halftime lead.  EBC continues to win, though again not by much.  Wal JL switches to a running game with some youthful roster additions.  MPCBC displays some great clutch shooting to come back from a 15 point deficit and win in sudden death.

Walnut basketball at its best with MPCBC Jason's winning trey at the buzzer.  Wal Jas is behind the whole game but presses to win in the last minutes.  Its close for about ten minutes and then FEC blows the game wide open behind the hot hand of Pat.  Herald enjoys a 41-19 first half and sweats out the win when Kelvin arrives for the second half.

C2 finds no defense in Wal Han and enjoys another easy win, led by Henry and Jojo.  MPCBC runs away in the last five minutes of a close game as Wal JL falls apart.  Fec2 is another new team that enjoys a victory welcome from a height challenged but game Walnut Jas.  Terry delivers on 13 of 15 freethrows in route to an impressive 28 points and come from behind victory for Herald over FEC.  Gary hits a trey to tie the game with eight seconds left but Jojo wins the game for EBC with two seconds remaining on a driving short jumper, capping off an incredible 30 point performance including six treys.

Tied 16 all at the half, but Jojo and Andy end strong to lead EBC in a close win.  The running game of Herald gives them lay up after lay up.  Fec2 plays the first half with four players to keep it within reach and takes the game in the last moments.  Wal Han wins the second half 27-22, but C1 wins the game with a dominating 32-15 first half.

Aug 8 Games

Defense led by Nathan wins the game for FEC as MPCBC has one of those off nights.  Its a lay up clinic for Fec2 as they run out to a 46 point first half over Ryan-less C1.  Scoring phenom David is back on EBC, but C2 plays impressively in their lost.  Herald cruises with a 23-0 start against an outclassed Wal Han.

Sept 26 Games

Brandon ties the game on a nice pass from Kelvin with seconds left to send it to OT.  Some nice shooting, especially from Garrett, overcomes MPCBC starting with four players. Herald jumps out to a 8-0 start, and Fec ties it at 19 all by half time, but Herald squeezes out the W with its quick D.  EBC extends a 17-10 half time lead, not needing its top two shooters.

Oct 17 Games

FEC only leads 23-21 at the half, but Pat scores 14 of his points in the second period and FEC tightens the D.  Wal Jas takes the lead early in the second half and gets the upset victory with a balanced team effort.  Just a two point difference at the half, then C1 goes long range with eight treys, four by Reuel, three by Jason, and one by Ryan.  Wal JL goes on a 16-0 run in the last two minutes to take the W despite a breakout game for Howard.
