Tartuffe written by Moliere American Airlines Theatre January 25, 2003
I've never seen a production of Tartuffe prior to this and I was pleasantly surprised. It was extremely witty and just as relevant today as it was in 1664 when it was written. It starred Brian Bedford and Henry Goodman. To see these two classically trained British actors was a treat. They spoke the language as if they spoke it every day. It was truly lyrical. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast was not nearly as smooth, but it didn't take away one bit from this show. The show flowed smoothly and never dragged, which can easily happen if classic theater is poorly executed. In a post show discussion with the actors, one audience member compared Tartuffe to the Bush administration. I see it, a wolf in sheep's clothing for sure! Now if we can only change the ridiculous name of this theater. |
