This was the final installment of the 2003 Encores! series. This was the only show where Richard Rogers wrote both the lyrics and the music. It opened at the 54th St. Theatre on March 14, 1962 and starred Richard Kiley and Diahann Carroll. This production had James Naughton and Maya Days in the leading roles. The music is beautiful but the book is dated. The show takes place in Paris and evolves around the interracial relationship between the 2 leading characters. There were fine performances by the leads, as well as Emily Skinner, Marc Kudisch and Len Cariou but the show, overall, missed it's mark. If I were to seek out the CD for this show, I'd look for the original version. |
