House of Flowers City Center February 15, 2003 This Encores presentation originally appeared on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre (now Neil Simon) on December 30, 1954. This current production starred Tonya Pinkins, Armella McQueen, Maurice Hines and Roscoe Lee Browne with music by Harold Arlen, lyrics by Truman Capote and Harold Arlen and book by Truman Capote. The score is beautiful, but not theatrical. It's the type of thing I'd enjoy listening to rather than seeing performed. The actors as a whole were weak, epecially the two madames. The show could have used a little more humor. The best thing about the show was the choreography. I'm glad I saw it, but not one of the better Encores! shows. |
