MAN OF LA MANCHA Martin Beck Theatre June 12, 2003
I have always loved this musical. The first time I saw it was back in the 70's at a dinner theater on Long Island with Richard Kiley, it's original star. This production has Brian Stokes Mitchell leading the helm with Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (what is it with "Marys with 3 names"?) as Aldonza and Ernie Sabella as Don Quixote's side kick. The musical is a fusion of the life of Spanish writer, Cervantes, and his master work, El Quijote. It is about a man who is blinded by his ongoing quest for peace and goodness and his war against the evils of society. People think he's crazy but placate his whims, however, his virtues touched the heart of one person, Aldonza. This incredible cast is joined by Mark Jacoby, Stephen Bogardus and Don Mayo. The semi-circular set creates the perfect mood and is used in a magical fashion. Both Ms. Mastrantonio and Mr. Mitchell's subtle nuances to their characters is so moving that if they don't strike an emotional chord in you, nothing will. |
