THE BIG BOSS
Director : Lo Wei
Producer : Raymond Chow

The Big Boss was Bruce
Lee's debut kung-fu film and was completed in 1971, starring
Bruce Lee, Maria Yi and James Tien.
Chen Chao-An (Bruce Lee) arrives in Taiwan to stay with his
cousins, and starts work on the local ice factory. Chen had
previously promised to his mother to never fight again, but when
two of the workers discover a stash of drugs in one of the
blocks, trouble soon begins. The two workers are disposed of
after refusing a large sum of money to join the scam, and frozen
in a block of ice. When Chen's cousin and his friend go to the
"Big Bosses" house to investigate their disappearance,
they too are killed and the family become suspicious. When they
are still not at work the next day, the workers refuse to work
and a fight breaks out. Chen steps in to save them, causing the
henchmen to run away, and breaking his promise. Chen is then
promoted to foremen in an attempt to calm the workers down, but
obviously the two still don't appear.
When a local prostitute who used to work at the ice factory tells
Chen that the bosses are up to no good, he decides that he shall
later investigate the factory. But when the bosses son realises
that Chen has found out, the henchmen visit the family home and
murder them all, whilst Chen investigates the factory, and finds
not only the drugs, but the remains of the two workers. The
bosses son and his gang enter the factory, and an excellent fight
scene takes place, in which Chen single-handedly defeats the lot
of them and kills the bosses son. When Chen returns home that
night, he discovers his cousins dead and decides to get revenge
on the boss. He visits the house, and kills the boss in an
absolutely superb fight scene to end the film with Chen being
arrested.
Rating : 9/10 Brilliant, one of my
favourite films. A good plot and although not much fighting due
to Chens promise, the end fight is brilliant.
