The column explanations below are taken from the introductions to
the STANDARD and the PRELIMINARY CHART catalogs.
*** THE STANDARD CHART CATALOG ***
Designation - This is the Harvard Designation. Note that + and - signs are used to indicate north or south declination.
An "R" preceding the designation indicates that reversed charts
are available.
Name - Name of the variable per IAU (an NSV number indicates a
suspected variable).
Range - Brightness of maximum and minimum magnitude. If no letter
or symbol follows the magnitude, then it is assumed that the
visual range is given. A "p" following range indicates
photographic magnitudes, which may be 1 or 2 magnitudes FAINTER
than visual (for red variables); V = photoelectric V magnitudes;
B = photoelectric B magnitudes. Also, < > = mean range; aavso =
visual range based on observations in the AAVSO International Database.
Type - Type of variation as follows (subclasses are not listed):
C = CEPHEID
CST = CONSTANT
E = ECLIPSING BINARY
I = IRREGULAR, ASSOCIATED WITH DIFFUSE NEBULA
L = IRREGULAR
N = NOVA
NL = NOVA-LIKE
NR = RECURRENT NOVA
QSO = QUASAR
RCB = R CORONAE BOREALIS TYPE
RR = RR LYRAE TYPE
RV = RV TAURI TYPE

Period - The period (parentheses indicate an approximation).
Spec. - The spectral class (if known).
Types of Charts - Scales, or types, of charts available. A number
after the chart type indicates that several variables are shown
on the same chart. An asterisk (*) preceding the chart type
indicates that this is the first star named on the chart, and
that the chart will be filed under this designation. A dash (-)
preceding the chart type indicates that the variable is marked on
the chart for identification or finding purposes only, and is not
to be observed with that chart, or is not to be included in
regular observing programs. For example, the variable may always
be too faint so that there are no suitable comparison stars on
this chart.
Finder - Number of the finder chart if there is one available.
Year - The chart date (or the latest revision date) of each chart
in the group.
*** PRELIMINARY CHART CATALOG ***
Designation. - The Harvard Desgination of the variable. An "R"
preceding the designation indicates that reversed charts are
available.
Name - The name of the variable per IAU (an NSV number
indicates a suspected variable).
Type - The type of variation exhibited by the variable. A list of
abbreviations taken from Kholopov et al. General Catalogue of
Variable Stars (GCVS), Fourth Edition, Moscow appears on page 2
(or refer to the list given in the introduction of the Standard
Chart Catalog).
Range - The magnitude range of the variable followed by a letter
as follows:
V - visual
P - photographic
B - photoelectric UBV blue
V - photoelectric UBV V
<...> - mean visual range
with rare exceptions, the listed ranges agree with those shown in the GCVS.
Type of Charts - Chart scales available. Intermediate scales such
as ab or cd, and also slight variations (+ or - signs) are
sometimes used where the original material was not to the scales
defined above.
Charts originating with organizations other than the AAVSO have
capital letters appended as follows:
F - Publications of the Association Francaise des Observateurs d'Etoiles Variables (AFOEV).
Z - Publications of the Variable Star Section, Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand (RASNZ).
Date - The date of the latest available chart issue or revision for each chart type.
Observers should consult these dates and update their files with latest new or revised chart.
