Dear Friends,

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Frances (Fran) Alleman-Luce, mother of our moderator, James Tendean-Luce (Jim).  A memorial service will be held at the church at 3 pm, Saturday, March 24 followed by a reception.  The church is located on Madison Avenue at 31st Street, New York City.

A native of Hingham, Massachusetts, Fran passed away at Lenox Hill Hospital on March 1, 2001. She had recently moved to Roosevelt Island from Brookline, Massachusetts. She was a child psychologist and passionate civil rights advocate.  Her ashes will be interred over the summer in the Dudley Alleman Memorial Garden of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hingham.

Fran is survived by Jim, and his Indonesian family, as well as her oldest son, Stanford (Boston), daughter Molly (Chicago) and Rick (Austin).  Please keep her son Rick in your prayers in his battle with cancer. He is a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Austin.

Questions concerning accommodations should be directed to Jim at (212) 755-7285 or e-mailed to [email protected].

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Frances D. Alleman-Luce Orphans Fund, in care of the Madison Avenue Baptist Church, 30 East 31st Street, New York, N.Y.  10016 (office: (212) 685-1377).  Checks should be made payable to "Madison Avenue Baptist Church" and memo'd "Alleman-Luce Orphans Fund."  This fund will be used to support the construction and maintenance of orphanages in Indonesia, Haiti and Guyana, as per Fran's wishes.

Please call our office at (212) 685-1377 if you have any questions or email to [email protected].

In Peace,

Michael B. Easterling, Pastor

On behalf of New York Theatre Ballet, we are making a $200 donation to the Alleman-Luce Orphans Fund in memory of your mother.  We are unable to attend the Memorial Service on the 24th but hope that this small tribute will help celebrate her memory and a cause she held dear.  Your loss is immense and you have our heartfelt sympathy.  May the words and deeds of your friends and colleagues bring you some measure of comfort in the coming weeks and months, and may you, in time, come to find relief and even pleasure in
remembering all the wonderful things you shared with her during your mother's lifetime.  I am sure she was a remarkable woman.

Sincerely,
Diana Byer, Artistic Director

Fran Luce was a vital part of the Oxford, Ohio Branch of the NAACP during the 1950s and 60s.  She headed many committees, such as one that pushed local barbershops to cut African-American hair, and another that fought to open our local private school to all children, regardless of race or religion.  These things happened because of the pressure of these committees.

I personally considered her my friend, as I was her friend.

P.E.O. Sisterhood
Massachusetts Chapter K

Memorial to Frances Alleman-Luce

We, as members of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, write this in remembrance of our dear sister, Frances Alleman-Luce.  The P.E.O. Sisterhood was founded by seven close friends in 1869 at Iowa Wesleyan College, in an era when college was not a part of most women's education.  It is a sisterhood based upon the principles of friendship and loyalty.  Its purposes are charitable and educational, and its outreach is worldwide.  The educational and philanthropic purposes of P.E.O. are accomplished through projects, including a college which the organization owns, as well as loans, grants, and scholarships to women pursuing various educational goals in other colleges and universities.  The cardinal virtues of P.E.O. are Faith, Love, Purity, Justice, and Truth.  Francis Alleman-Luce exemplified these virtues.

Today we pay loving tribute to her memory.  We grieve because her visible presence is no longer with us, but we are grateful for our association with her.  Her elegance, intellect, and wry humor as well as her dedication and service to our group will not be forgotten.  Though you cannot see the bird singing, if you listen with your heart, you always can hear her song.  With love to the memory of our sister, we are making a donation to our projects to further the education of more women.

Sincerely,
Marlys Saltzer

Dear Family and Loved Ones,

Although it is with great sadness on our part that  we receive the news of the death of Gods servant Frances, we rejoice in her great Christian witness among us and for Gods promises that she has  been raised with Christ.

During this time of Lent we are reminded of the  sacrifices and servanthood of Jesus.  Everything about Frances life witnessed to our call to follow in our Lords footsteps.  Our Baptismal Covenant asks the following: Will you  seek and serve Christ  in all persons?  Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?  Frances did all this and more.  She will be remembered in our prayers this week at St. Lukes, as will all of you.  God Bless.

Yours in Christ,
The Rev. Faith C. Perrizo
