HOW WIDE RATIO IS YOUR DIRT BIKE GEARBOX? FIND OUT BELOW
A wide ratio gear box is handy for dual sporting because you can have first gear set for tight trail use, yet still do the speed limit comfortably on the open highway. Overall gearing is set by the rear and countershaft sprockets but the gearbox "width is fixed". You can compare the "width of different bikes simply by dividing the first (low) gear ratio by the top (usually 5th) gear ratio. Below is a list comparing various dirt bikes. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
In first gear the motor is turning 2 to 4 times faster that it does in fifth.
If a 1998 CR250 (2.07) and a 2000 KTM 200 EXC(3.03)
were both geared down so that their first gears were the same overall ratio, at
the same RPM:
- The CR could do 45 mph in fifth gear
- The KTM200 could do 45*(3.033/2.07)= 66 mph in fifth gear
- A Honda XR250L (3.52) could ddo 77 mph in fifth gear at the same rpm!
45*(3.52/2.07) = 77.
Note some ironies. For example, the 2000 KTM 400EXC 6 speed transmission is closer spaced than the 2000 KTM 400 LC4 5-speed !
