Excel Spreadsheets

If you are unfamiliar with any of the skills of Microsoft Excel, you can reference this page for the step-by-step instructions. If you need more information than is given here, please refer to the textbook used for this class (or any other good textbook that covers the basics of Microsoft Excel).

To Launch Microsoft Excel 97:

1. Click the START button
2. On the START menu, point to PROGRAMS
3. On the PROGRAMS menu, click MICROSOFT EXCEL

Entering and Saving Data in a Spreadsheet

1. Select the cell and type your label, value or formula
2. When you would like to save your work, save the file by:
3. Clicking FILE from the File pull-down menu
4. Click SAVE AS...
5. Type in a Filename
6. Select the drive and folder where the file should be saved in the Save in: box
7. Click the SAVE button

Changing and Deleting the contents of a cell:

1. To CHANGE the contents of a cell, click in the cell where you want the data to appear and type the new data
2. To DELETE text, select the cell and type the Delete Key on the keyboard

If you want to Copy the data in a spreadsheet:

1. Select the cell or cells you wish to copy
2. From the Edit pull-down menu, choose Copy
3. Choose the cell where you want the copied data to go
4. Choose PASTE from the Edit pull-down menu

To Move text:

1. Select the cells you wish to move
2. From the Edit pull-down menu, choose CUT
3. Choose the cell where you want the text to go
4. Choose PASTE from the Edit pull-down menu

To Insert a CHART into your document:

1. Select the data that contains the information for the chart
2. Click on the CHART WIZARD button on the Standard Toolbar
1. Place your insertion point where you want the TABLE to go
2. From the TABLE pull-down menu, choose INSERT TABLE
3. Specify the number of Rows and Columns
4. Click OK
5. Type your text into to cells, move to the next cell by pressing the TAB key

To Insert a Picture into your document:

1. Place your insertion point where you want the picture to appear
2. Choose PICTURE from the Insert pull-down menu
3. Specify if you want the picture from a file or from Clip Art, they choose the file or clip art image you want
4. Click the INSERT button

To Spell Check a Document:

1. Put your insertion point at the beginning of the document
2. From the TOOLS pull-down menu, choose SPELLING AND GRAMMAR
3. Make your choices as Word finds the words that are not in its dictionary

To PRINT a Document

1. Click FILE from the pull-down menu
2. Click PRINT
3. Click OK
