he was departing for home after a days work and injured his back. He never fully recovered from the fall and
was diagnosed with A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig Disease) in mid 1995 and lived
only a short while after the diagnosis.

Here's what I've been able to piece together on the Hayes side of the
family. Henry Jackson moved from Cleburne Co., Al. before 1900 to
Dekalb Co., Alabama, then to Marshall Co. in the Free Home area.
Henry's mother was a full-blooded Indian. We think she was Cherokee,
but could have been Creek or Choctaw. She was always called Granny
Burrell. After Henry's father died she married a Burrell, There is
a Starling Burrell in the 1870 census in Cleburne Co., his wife was
Nancy. They have a son listed as Henry b-1859 in Georgia. This could
be our Henry, and the census taker just did not make a distinction
between children from previous marriages. I've always been told that
Henry's father died during the Civil War. Samuel Buys Hayes was from
Georgia and died in Calhoun Co., Alabama, next to Cleburne Co., he had
a son Layfayett Hayes who died in the Civil War. I've never been able
to find any information on Layfayett Hayes that ties him to Henry.
I have a picture of Henry Jackson Hayes and his mother "Granny Burrell"
and they both have strong Indian features.

be our Henry, and the census taker just did not make a distinction
between children from previous marriages. I've always been told that
Henry's father died during the Civil War. Samuel Buys Hayes was from
Georgia and died in Calhoun Co., Alabama, next to Cleburne Co., he had
a son Layfayett Hayes who died in the Civil War. I've never been able
to find any information on Layfayett Hayes that ties him to Henry.
I have a picture of Henry Jackson Hayes and his mother "Granny Burrell"
and they both have strong Indian features.
