816 – Prince of Space (aka Yusei Oji)

ééééé

Things I liked in the movie:

Phantom’s laugh.

Boot blacking.

The Krankorian habit of wearing hangers on their heads.

The overweight giant used solely for showing off.

Impressions

I’m not sure why I like this episode so much.  Perhaps it’s the movie’s innate silliness combined with the riffing, which is playful and goofy as opposed to Mike’s sometimes savage attacks.  The Phantom of Krankor, a silly-looking guy with a mustache, garish eye makeup and with an antenna on his head, has a strangely imitable laugh.  He laughs one “heh” at a time, loudly and slowly and his tone drops gradually until he seems to tire.  By the end of the movie, you find yourself imitating it.

Synopsis

A handsome young Japanese boy who spends grueling hours every day polishing boots is secretly a super hero and extremely gifted chemist.  He is mentoring some pathetic orphans on the art of boot-blacking when a space ship comes to Earth to take over and he has to go fight.  The leader of the invasion is a hilariously goofy man with a villain mustache who laughs a long, strange, monotone laugh.  The good guy wins after a really bad air battle.

Host Segments

Opening: Crow goes on and on about their dog and bear game that got carried away and his entrails are now hanging out.  Mike encourages them to play a nice game.

Intro: They’re playing sea lion and squirrel, which is nicer.  Bobo does a space walk from Pearl’s van and gets stuck in a wormhole.  Pearl insists that Brain guy goes to get him otherwise slot machines will never be invented.  They get dragged into the wormhole and finally drag the SOL in with them.

Host segment 1:  Mike and the ‘Bots have a conversation that’s all out of time order.  It’s clever and hard to follow. Tom answers Mike’s questions before he answers.

Host segment 2: Mike is transformed into a small robot and spouts gibberish about turning into potentialities.  Mike finds a solution to get them back to normal, but the ‘Bots won’t do it because Mike’s so cute, they want to keep looking at him like that.

Host segment 3: The wormhole deposits M&TB in a rather lovely sylvan glen.  Tom gets allergies.

End: They are back to normal, except Krankor is on the ship.  They are orbiting Earth in Roman times.   I’m sad to say this results in the lamest series of boring host segments imaginable for several episodes.

Stinger: The Phantom says: "Hah! Hah! Hah! Hah! Hah! Hah! Hah!"

Funny Riffs

The special effects of lasers are apparently done by doctoring the film.

Mike: An exchange of deadly negative scratches.

Phantom shows his monster on a views creen. It’s just a big fat guy bumbling around on a cheap set.

Phantom of Krankor: A monster which I have created. He obeys my slightest command. Crow: Like, 'Wander around aimlessly' and 'Gain weight.’

Mike: Oh the inanity!

Crow: Oh the Japanity!

Crow: Your guns are useless, but scare the crap out of me anyway.

Mike: An alien race too proud to ask for directions.

Mike: No one can resist my... um... things...

Crow regarding POS:  His power apparently lies in his choosing incompetent enemies.

Crow, as the Prince of Space: Allow me to reference my earlier codicil on how your weapons are ineffective! Ha ha!

Phantom of Krakor: Do not be alarmed! Stand by for an important message! Stand by for an important message!

Servo as TV announcer: Veterans cannot be turned down!

A Japanese Air Force pilot reports to his boss.

Boss: Ah, Captain Manikata. Come in, please.

Mike as Boss: I understand you're stuffed with cheese.

The chicken-men's spaceship, which looks rather chicken-ey itself, flies about, terrorizing the people in the street.

Crow as Phantom: Set whole fryers to stun!

Servo as Citizen: Oh! A giant roast chicken!

Crow as Citizen: It is brown on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside!

Mike as Citizen: It is not fermented, pickled, or raw! Run!
