518 – The Atomic Brain (aka Monstrosity) with Short:  What About Juvenile Delinquency?

ééé

Things I liked in the movie:

The girl with the cat brain.

The “interview” with the old lady where she pokes the girls like cattle.

The dual action glove compartment button.

Impressions

Overall this is a pleasant episode, but not inspiring.  The short is so short that it begs the question, “why bother?”  The host segments are cute, but flat.  The movie itself is creepy and definitely bad enough to deserve some mockery.  One of the more fun parts is the bad music serenading the actors as the walk up and down the stairs (we see a lot of that!).  Mike and the ‘Bots sing along to the music, ad-libbing funny little songs.  It’s a bad movie, don’t get me wrong.  The riffing is just a little slow.  But I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it, I just enjoyed it more slowly than usual.

Synopsis

Short

Some teenage thugs in Members Only jackets and jeans rolled up way too high beat up an older man.  The man’s son meets the thugs for some fun (totally unaware of what happened) and they tell him about the guy they just beat up.  He realizes it’s his father and angrily tears his flannel space patch from his jacket and leaves the gang.  Later, the city council meets to decide what to do with the town’s out of control teenagers.  The son of the victim defies his former gang and joins up with some seriously homely nerds from school to address the city council.  The thugs know about their plan to talk to city council so they plan to stop the nerds.  The nerds have to outrun the gang of thugs and barely beat them to the city council meeting.  Then, in a big dramatic finale, the city council allows them to talk.  They look confused and a big question mark appears.  The end.  This is a very short clip and there isn’t much time to get much riffing in.  It’s harmless, all things considered.

Movie

An rich, narcissistic old lady hires a scientist to transplant her brain into the body of a beautiful girl.  As part of his scientific program, he tries out the brain transplanting on some corpses he digs up from a nearby cemetery, including a large doofus that he fits with a shiny new dog brain and a cute young girl that wanders around essentially brainless.  She “entertains” me, he says.  After the old lady is satisfied that it’s going to work, she puts an ad in foreign papers advertising for a nursemaid.  Three girls answer the ad and are taken to the house.  Once there, they are poked and looked over like beef being chosen for a presidential dinner.  The old lady picks her favorite, the British girl with the bizarre accent, and sends her to the best room.  The other two are put in “runners-up” quarters.  Contestant #2 tries to call the police, but discovers that the phone is cut off.  The least attractive girl, Anita, is taken to the basement.  She disappears without explanation and the other two decide to look for her.  What they find is their erstwhile co-worker with a cat’s brain implanted.  She attacks the British girl and blinds her.  Then cat girl falls from the roof to her death.  That leaves only the Austrian girl, Nina (Nine-ah).  The old lady goes to her lawyer and changes her will to give everything to Nina in preparation for the brain transplant.  She even schedules a press release announcing that Nina is her heir.  The old lady dismisses her long time gigolo and he is angered by the betrayal.  Nina persuades him to help her escape but the old lady kills him with a knitting needle.  Having exhausted all attempts to escape, Nina has no choice but to be ethered and operated on.  The doctor puts Nina and the old lady out for surgery.  There are some clips of bubbling fluid and a thing flashing and then the operation is over.  Surprise!  The doctor didn’t hurt Nina.  He put the old lady’s brain in the cat’s old body instead!  He offers Nina a chance to live if she’ll use her new inheritance to support him.  While she’s thinking it over, he goes into the radiation chamber.  The “cat” pushes buttons and locks him in, causing his death and extremely rapid transformation into a skeleton.  The British girl regains sight in one eye, rescues Nina and fries herself on a transformer.  Only Nina is left alive.  She runs away as the house burns.  The old lady/cat follows her.

Host Segments

Segment one:  Mike invents . . . The Mads!  Crow is dressed like Dr. F and Tom is dressed like Frank.  They make fun of themselves and Clayton gets defensive.

Segment two:  Tom used a weather station kit to make himself into “Weather Servo 9.”  He wants to be put out into space to gather weather information even though Mike says there’s not much weather in space.  Its mainly cold cold cold,  and a meteor shower messes him up.

Segment three:  Mike shows the ‘Bots a chin puppet.  That’s a face on his chin with some clothes over his forehead so it looks like a mini-person when he turns his head upside down.  The ‘Bots don’t understand why that’s funny.  They tell him it’s disturbing.  He gives up and stands upright.  They start laughing and saying,  “He’s got an upside-down face on his chin!  Ha ha!”

Segment four: Magic voice is lonely.  The voice-over guy from the movie is there, too.  They use clips from the movie for his voice.  Magic voice is repelled.

Final:  Tom and Crow make a leap from Frank Kimball (the doctor in the movie) to Hank Kimball, the character on Green Acres.  Crow does that character for a while.  Mike and the ‘Bots read letters.  Tom gets a love letter.  Mike and Crow deflate him by saying the same girl wrote them, too.   Frank is “Dr. Frank” from the movie.  Clayton punches him in the face using a “Dr. Fist” prank.

Stinger:  Anita screams.

Funny Riffs

Short

The kid comes home and sees his dad on the couch all beat up.

Kid:  How’s dad?

Mother:  How did you know it was dad?

Mike as kid:  He’s always been my dad.

A large question mark appears on the screen.

Tom:  It’s Prince’s new name, isn’t it?

Movie

A wolfman like creature kills a guard at the cemetery and the music turns happy.

Tom:  It’s a delightfully whimsical murder!

Narrator:  This is one of the doctor’s mistakes.  A monstrosity.  An animal’s brain grafted into a human body.

Tom:  In retrospect, an obvious mistake.

Tom as monster:  Boss was I really a mistake like the man said?

Mike:  Oh no, you were a little miracle.

The doctor pushes the button that opens the glove compartment and the gate opens!

Crow:  Oh, a special dual-action glove box!

Narrator talking about the old lady:  Hadn’t everyone tried to cheat her?

She looks at the blind covered window.

Crow as old lady:  I don’t even trust those blinds.

The corpse is a young naked girl inside the “cyclotron” and the doctor observes through a window.  He steps away.

Mike: darn I need another quarter

At the airport a girl asks another one, “Can you tell me wheah ‘ollywood is frahm heah?”

Mike:  Can you tell me where my accent is from?

Crow:  When you get close to an accent, let us know.

One of the girls tries to make a phone call.  The phone looks weird.  She realizes it doesn’t work and hits it.

Crow:  This clock doesn’t work!

The camera takes a long look at the chamber where the victims are irradiated.  There’s some dry ice in a tub and flashing lights.  A smoke ring floats up from the dry ice.

Tom:  Hey!  Gandalf’s down there!

The graveyard girl with no brain walks barefoot across the lab.

Mike:  Hey, no shoes, no brain, no service, lady!

The Spanish girl has a cat’s brain.  She looks dull.

Crow:  El meow.

The graveyard girl walks blankly across the lawn.

Mike: I sort of think, therefore I sort of am.

The British girl is swaggering across the room trying to seduce the butler.

Mike:  She’s gonna pull a groin muscle!

The British girl is blinded.

Doctor: There’s nothing else I can do for her.

Tom:  Geez, they’re fusin’ species left and right and they can’t give her an eyeball?

During the credits:

Mike:  I’m going to be charitable and assume all these people were forced to do this movie at gunpoint.
