| Why is that man
(January 16, 2005) Why is that man pushing his shopping cart at the side of the road while I am driving by in a warmed car on this overcast, blustery day? He is unshaven and likely unwashed, and he moves along beside the flow of traffic, where few pay him any notice. Its not unreasonable to assume that the man has some useful skills, able to make things or fix them, to use his hands in a constructive way. At the very least, he is able to survive in a city that gets quite cold in the winter, implying high degrees of toughness, resilience and adaptability. As for me, I cannot build or grow anything; I have no skills with my hands; I have angered many good friends; and I dont know where I am going. In my rearview mirror I see the man. He keeps moving with his load of cans. There but for the luck of randomness go I. |
