The roads lead nowhere                                      (April 4, 2004)

The roads lead nowhere.
Drive them all you want,
open lanes and supple curves,
and they always bring you back,
right back to the parking space you left
hours ago, when getting away
seemed like something you needed to do.
Out there you hope to find
what eludes you,
but you come back empty every time.
Of course you understand the lesson:
theres nothing out there that isnt here.
You recognize this,
you even preach it to others,
yet youre always driving off,
trying a different route, looking,
searching, thinking.
The roads lead nowhere,
but here.
