Roadside                                              February 24, 2000

Roadside.
Stuffed polar bear now soggy and browning.
Flowers, shriveled and colorless, still tied to the fence with wire.
A message written on cardboard in tatters on the ground.

For a time days and, for some, weeks cars
slowed as they passed the scene of the accident.
But now drivers press on, the exhaust of their vehicles
adding to the grime which covers everything.
