The Hardwick Fair August 15 - 17, 2003
This sign was in the Hardwick Historical Society building. Greenwich only exists now as a memory, having been one of the four towns flooded to create the Quabbin Reservoir.
Three young people get their cows ready for judging.
A girl carries her entry, one of the biggest that I saw, in the frog jumping contest.
There were many categories of animals, produce, and crafts in the fair. Here is a blue-ribbon winner.
Ian and Amy, friends and co-workers of mine, watch the frog jumping contest. Ian, a local boy, once entered a cow named Toby in the fair.
Nothing says "country fair" like small children on large pieces of farm equipment.
This girl feels at home among the cattle.
Some of the entries in the flower categories.
The frog jumping contest is one of the highlights of the Hardwick Fair. People gather around the ring on the town green, and children parade out one by one with their entries. All around, other kids hold buckets and pails with their contestants. In the upper left, you can see the crowd gathered in anticipation. Above, a girl places her frog on the starting block and then to the left the contest officials use stakes to mark three of the frog's jumps. After that, the entries usually hop into the crowd, causing a bit of havoc.
