Both the right and left ventricles are now completely filled, and a strong muscular contraction sends blood quickly out of the heart. The right ventricle sends the deoxygenated blood from the body to the lungs and the left ventricle sends oxygenated blood to the body. All four valves play an important role during this phase. The mitral and tricuspid valves prevent blood from flowing back into the atria during the contraction, and the pulmonic and aortic valves stop blood from traveling back into the heart once it is pumped out. As you can see, the heart is an amazing structure!
