1: And the Lord (Yehovah) spoke to Moses (see 1:1), saying,
2: "Speak to the sons of Israel, and take of every one of them a rod according to the house of their fathers, of all their princes according to the house of their fathers twelve rods: write you every man's name upon his rod.
3: And you shall write Aaron's name upon the rod of Levi: for one rod shall be for the head of the house of their fathers.
4: And you shall lay them up in the tent of the congregation before the arkof the covenant, where I will meet with you.

5: And it shall come to pass, that the man's rod, whom I shall choose, shall blossom: and I will make to cease from Me the murmurings of the sons of Israel, whereby they murmur against you."

6: And Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, and every one of their princes gave him a rod apiece, for each prince one, according to their fathers' houses, even twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron was among their rods.
7: And Moses laid up the rods (Korah's rebellion added 2 things to the tabernacle: Aaron's rod within, bronze plates outside [16:39,40]) before the Lord (Yehovah) in the tabernacle of witness (=the tent of [or containing] the testimony [i.e. the ark, and the 2 tables]).

8: And it came to pass, that on the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds.
9: And Moses brought out all the rods from before the Lord (Yehovah) to all the sons of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod.

10: And the Lord (Yehovah) said to Moses, "Bring Aaron's rod again before the ark of the covenant, to be kept for a token against the sons of rebellion (genitive of character = rebellious ones);

and you shall quite take away their murmurings from Me, that they not die."

11: And Moses did so: as the Lord (Yehovah) commanded him, so he did.

12: And the sons of Israel spoke to Moses, saying, "Behold, we die, we perish, we all perish (Fig., to enhance the alarm of the People).
13: Whosoever comes any thing near to the dwelling place of the Lord (Yehovah) shall die: shall we be consumed with dying? (Fig., to emphasise alarm)

1: And the Lord (Yehovah) said to Aaron (see 3:40), "You and your sons and your father's house with you shall bear the perveresness of the sanctuary: and you and your sons with you shall bear the perverseness of your priesthood.

2: And your brethren also of the tribe (=staff) of Levi, the staff of your father, you bring with you, that they may be joined to you, and minister to you: but you and your sons with you shall minister before the tent of the congregation.
3: And they shall keep your charge, and the charge of all the tent of the congregation: only they shall not come near the vessels of the sanctuary and the altar, that neither they, nor you also, die.
4: And they shall be joined to you, and keep the charge of the tent of the congregation, for all the service of the tent of the congregation: and a stranger shall not come near to you.

5: And you all shall keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar: that there be no wrath any more upon the sons of Israel.

6: And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the sons of Israel: to you they are given as a gift for Yehovah, to do the solemn service of the tent of the congregation.

7: Therefore you and you sons with you shall keep your priest's office for every thing of the altar, and within the vail; and you all shall serve: I have given your priest's office to you as a service of gift: and the stranger that cometh near shall be put to death."

8-19. Priests and the dues. Generally.

8: And the Lord (Yehovah) spoke to Aaron (see 1:1), "Behold, I also have given you the charge of My heave offerings of all the hallowed (=seperated, see Ex.3:5) things of the sons of Israel; to you have I given them by reason of the anointing (Fig., for the priesthood associated with it), and to your sons, by an ordinance for ever.
9: This shall be yours of the holy of holiest things, reserved from the fire: every approach offering of theirs, every meal offering of theirs, and every sin offering of theirs, and every trespass offering of theirs, which they shall render to Me, it shall be the holiest of holies for you and for your sons.
10: In the holiest of holies shall you eat it; every male shall eat it: it shall be set apart to thee.
11: And this is yours; the heave offering of their gift, with all the wave offerings of the sons of Israel: I have given them to you, and to you sons and to your daughters with you, by a statute for ever: every one that is clean in your house shall eat of it.
12: All the best of the oil, and all the best of the new wine (so called because it gets possesion of the brain), and of the wheat, the firstfruits of them which they shall offer to the Lord (Yehovah), them have I given you.
13: And whatsoever is first ripe in their land, which they shall bring to the Lord (Yehovah), shall be yours; every one that is clean in your house shall eat of it.
14: Every thing (see Lev.27:28) devoted (see Lev.27:1) in Israel shall be yours.
15: Every thing that opens the womb (see 3:13. Ex.13:2; 34:19. Lev.27:26) in all flesh, which they bring to Yehovah, whether it be of mankind or beasts, shall be yours: nevertheless the firstborn of mankind shall you surely ransom (see Ex.6:6), and the firstling of unclean beasts shall you ransom.
16: And those that are to be ransomed from a month old shall you ransom, according to your estimation, for the money of five shekels (aprox.2 oz.), after the shekel (weight) of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs ( oz.).
17: But the firstling of a cow, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat, you shall not redeem; they are set apart: you shall sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and shalt burn (as incense) their fat for an offering made by fire, for a sweet satisfaction to Yehovah (see Lev.1:9).
18: And the flesh of them shall be yours, as the wave breast and as the right shoulder are yours.
19: All the heave offerings of the set apart things, which the sons of Israel offer to the Lord (Yehovah), have I given to you, and your sons and your daughters with you, by a statute for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the Lord (Yehovah) to you and to your seed with you." (Heb. covenant = berth, from brh, to cut; hence to eat. As salt was scarce and precious, and used with all eating, so it was put by the Fig. Metonymy [of Adjunct], for eating, just as the breaking of bread was. See Isa.58:7 [A.V. "deal"]; Jer.16:7 [A.V. "bear"]. Lam.4:4. Ezek.18:7 {A.V. "given"]. Hence when wages were paid in kind, by finding the worker in food, "salt" was put for wage generally; so that a worker was spoken of as being worth, or not worth, his "salt". "A covenant of salt" was therefore a covenant made by sacrifice, which was first cut in two [Gen.15:10-18. Jer.34:18,19] and then eaten, thus solemnizing an inviolable covenant)

21: And, behold, I have given the sons of Levi all the tenth in Israel instead of an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tent of the congregation.
22: Neither must the sons of Israel henceforth come near the tent of the congregation, lest they bear sin, and die.
23: But the Levites shall do the service of the tent of the congregation, and they shall bear their peverseness: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the sons of Israel they have no inheritance.
24: But the tithes of the sons of Israel, which they offer as an heave offering to the Lord (Yehovah), I have given to the Levites to inherit: therefore I have said to them, Among the sons of Israel they shall have no inheritance."
25: And Yehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
26: "Thus speak to the Levites, and say to them, 'When you all take of the sons of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you all shall offer up an heave offering of it for the Lord (Yehovah), even a tenth part of the tithe.
27: And this your heave offering shall be reckoned to you, as though it were the corn from the threshingfloor, and as the fullness of the winepress.
28: Thus you all also shall offer an heave offering to Yehovah of all your tithes, which you all receive of the children of Israel; and you all shall give thereof the Lord's (Yehovah's) heave offering to Aaron the priest.
29: Out of all your gifts you all shall offer every heave offering of Yehovah, of all the best thereof, even the seperated part thereof out of it.'
30: Therefore you shall say to them, 'When you have heaved the best thereof from it, then it shall be counted to the Levites as the increase of the threshingfloor, and as the increase of the winepress.
31: And you all shall eat it in every place, you all and your households: for it is your reward for your service in the tabernacle of the congregation.
32: And you all shall bear no sin by reason of it, when you all have heaved from it the best of it: neither shall you all pollute the set apart things of the sons of Israel, lest you all die.' "

4: And Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood directly before the tent of the congregation seven times:
5: And one shall burn (down. Heb. sraph) the heifer in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn:
6: And the priest shall take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.
7: Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even.
8: And he that burns her shall wash his clothes in water (cp. Lev.16:28), and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even.
9: And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up outside the camp in a clean place (cp. the antitype, Joseph of Arimathea. Matt.27:57-60. Luke 23:50-53. John 19:38-42), and it shall be kept for the congregation of the sons of Israel for a water of separation: it is a purification for sin.

13: Whosoever touches the dead body of any man that is dead, and purifies not himself, defiles the tabernacle (dwelling place) of the Lord (Yehovah); and that soul shall be cut off from Israel: because the water of separation was not sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.

14: This is the law, when a man dies in a tent: all that come into the tent, and all that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.
15: And every open vessel, which has no covering bound upon it, it is unclean.
16: And whosoever touches one that is slain with a sword in the open fields, or a dead body (Heb. bemth, no word for body = one dead, as in v.18, not vv.11 and 13), or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.
17: And for an unclean person they shall take of the ashes (=dust) of the burnt (down) heifer of purification for sin, and running water (=living water, i.e. not stagnant) shall be put thereto in a vessel:
18: And a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons (=souls) that were there, and upon him that touched a bone, or one slain, or one dead, or a grave:
19: And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall purify himself, and wash his clothes (the common rite, see Lev.11:25; 14:8,9, &c.), and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even.
20: But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul (Heb. nepesh, used of "living souls" and "dead souls". Cp. vv.11,13 where it is rendered "any" and "body" respectively) shall be cut off from among the congregation, because he has defiled the sanctuary of the Lord (Yehovah): the water of separation has not been sprinkled upon him; he is unclean.

21: And it shall be a perpetual statute to them, that he that sprinkles the water of separation shall wash his clothes; and he that touches the water of separation shall be unclean until evening.
22: And whatsoever the unclean person touches shall be unclean; and the soul that touches it shall be unclean until evening.

6: And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the Lord (Yehovah) appeared to them.

7: And the Lord (Yehovah) spoke to Moses, saying,
8: Take the rod, and gather you the assembly together, you, and Aaron your brother, and you speak to the rock before their eyes (not "smite" as in v.11. The rock = Jacob's pillar [stone of Scone, or stone of destiny]. They had it with them. See Deut.8:15. It is the type and forshadow of Christ); and it shall give forth his water, and you shall bring forth to them water out of the rock: so you shall give the congregation and their beasts drink.

9: And Moses took the rod from before the Lord (Yehovah), as He commanded him.
10: And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said to them (he spoke to the People instead of the rock), Hear now, all you rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?
11: And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod (i.e. his tribal rod, cp. v.8) he smote (instead of speaking) the rock twice (showing the heat of his feelings): and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank (cp. 1 Cor.10:4), and their beasts also.

12: And the Lord (Yehovah) spoke to Moses and Aaron, Because you believed me not (so Moses entered not in, because of unbelief), to sanctify Me in the eyes of the sons of Israel (hence called "rebellion in v.24 and 27:14. Cp. Deut.32:51. Cp. "we" in v.10. His complaint in 11:21-23 was not public), therefore you shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

16: And when we cried to the Lord (Yehovah), He heard our voice, and sent an Angel, and has brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of your border:
