| The Martians get it rough in Space 1889, they get slammed by the European Powers. Their weapons are no match for the space age devices of the Colonial troops, things like magazine rifles and breechloading cannon. There are some things that might be of interest though . . . Grenades An interesting peculiarity is that the Hand Grenade has fallen out of favour amongst the European armies but the Martians occupy a technogy-era similiar to when the Hand Grenade enjoyed wide popularity on Earth. Treat Grenades as "Black Bombs" as per the Throwing rules in the Ref's screen rules expansion. Grenade Launchers A very old idea. Essentially a flintlock with a stubby, bell mouthed muzzle in which a grenade was placed, (the best variety had the grenades wick placed so it would be lit by the discharge, if you pre-lit your grenade and the weapon misfired you ran around with a live grenade sputtering in the end of your weapon,) Martian GL shots 1 Mag - Reload 6 Wnd * Save * Range 50y Weight 10lbs * As Black Bomb. Blunderbuss They have to have these, even if just to even out the ridiculous advantage the rules give shotguns. Maybe players really will surrender now! Blunderbuss Shots 1 Mag - Reload 3 Wnd 1D Save 0 Range 15* Weight 7lb *As Scattergun, required strength: 3 Volley Gun Essentially a musket with 20 barrels. Mounted on a stand and used to repel boarders, a problem Martians seem prone to. The Martian equivalent of a machine gun. These come in two types, the first fires each barrel one after the other and the second shot them all at once. VG#1 Shots 1 Mag 20 Reload 45 Wnd 2 Save 3 Range 45 Weight 124lbs VG#2 Shots 2* Mag 2 Reload 45 Wnd 3 Save 1 Range 45 Weight 124lbs #2 is considered a one-shot machinegun and obeys the machinegun rules. Required strength is VG#1:3 and VG#2:5. Puckle Gun This is a bit beyond the Martians but two are on display at the Tower of London and the plans are at the Patents Office, so it's concievable a visiting Martian could be exposed to the weapon. This is an awesome weapon for the Martians, possibly swaying the outcome of an intercity conflict. Essentially a very early revolving cannon, the Puckle Gun was designed in 1717. It features a hand revolved chamber of six to twelve rounds and a single fixed barrel. You fired the the first chamber, unwound the breechlock, rotated another chamber up to the breech, wound up the breechlock and fired again. The weapon fired "One Large or Sixteen Musquete Balles", in other words, shot or grape. This weapon is either match or flintlock. | Partridge Mortar An interesting weapon, take a Lob Gun and surround the main chamber with up to thirteen smaller muzzles. These are loaded with grenades and are fired from the main charge of the weapon, saturating the target with grenades in addition to a big honking rock. The drawback is the abysmal loading time and as the grenades are fired from the main charge they Must be loaded to fire the gun. This was designed and used in 1717 in England. PM Lob Gun Weight 250 Pen 2+(-) DV 4+P ROF (4) Crew 5 Rng -/3 Cost 2,500 On a hit the target takes 1D/2 Pen -, DV P hits across the decks. Against a stationary target such as an emplacement this weapon reigns supreme, these targets take 1D+1 hits. Leather Guns Used to good effect by Gustavus Adolphus the Swedish warrior king, these weapons were invented around 1620 and make good sense for metal-poor Mars. A copper-lined reinforced iron barrel is bound with iron wire before being wrapped in canvas, wooden rings and finally leather. The net result is a gun that weighs half as much but wears out faster. Guns made using this technique must be replaced after 1D battles. If the weapon is used beyond this it may explode, doing it's damage to it's crew. To check if a gun needs replacing is a Difficult:Gunnery skill. The leather gun explodes on a to hit roll of 1 anytime after it's replacement time is exceeded. |
