Light Tanks, Armoured Cars and Armoured Gun Carriers.
Combat attrition, strategic strikes on manufacturing facilities and lack of maintenance has almost annihilated the MBT fleets of the main powers in twilight 2000. This, coupled with warfare that has moved into areas of marginal access to normal manouevre forces, has brought a renaissance of the light armoured combat vehicle. These small vehicles are easily destroyed by the few disposable anti tank weapons left, but are invulnerable to small arms fire, and are capable of bringing heavy firepower to where the infantry needs it the most.

During the late 1970s, the Bundeswehr began to decommision it's Jagdpanzer Kanone 90mm tank destroyers (based on the Marder APC chassis) owing to the reality of shoulder launched missiles making the tank hunter concept somewhat obsolete, making a dedicated and ultimately vulnerable vehicle to do something that a squad member could do did not make military or economic sense. Most of the hulls were placed into storage for training purposes, apart for some that were modified into the Jaguar I (HOT missile) & II (TOW missile) missile vehicles phased out during the early 1990s, these vehicles were given an upgraded engine and improved bolt-on armour package before obsolescence forced them too into the storage sheds.
During the Twilight War, nuclear and strategic bombing strikes massively damaged the major German MBT production areas at FFG Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft in Flensburg and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH in Mnchen, but the Rheinmetall, Mauser and other military facilities at Unterl escaped damage by almost superhuman efforts on the part of the Luftwaffe. The Unterl facilities were only capable of constructing turrets, large calibre weapons and ammunition, but desperate repairs at the Mnchen and Flensburg facilities enabled the Bundeswehr to restart Marder production, but the Leopard I, II and III facilities were damaged beyond the capability of the engineers to immediately repair.
Immediately, Jagdpanzer Kanones and Jaguars were removed from storage and upfitted with the powerful Rheinmetall 120mm gun as well as up-armour kits and the more powerful Daimler Benz 8 cylinder diesel from the Jaguar II. The retrofit worked well, with modern vision and sighting equipment the old warhorses were capable of bringing direct fire 120mm AT rounds against enemy tanks when the missile drought really took hold after the second round nuclear exchanges.
Jaguar IIIs can be found in any German unit during the later stages of the Twilight War, their economical fuel requirements compared with MBTs usually see them employed in the manouevre stage of any action, the heavier armour and staying power of the Leopard IIs and IIIs are prefered for frontal assault and atrittional warfare.

Following the primary exchange, many Bundeswehr and TerrHeer units began asking for an armoured vehicle capable of going in with the troops and bringing heavy HE fire on strongholds, the premium on remaining MBTs making these units usually unavailable or too valuable for this duty. Even though the Jaguar III was being rushed into battle at this time, the decision was made to utilise some of these hulls and ex-East German 122mm howitzers as direct-fire bunker busters similiar to the WW2 Sturmgeschutz self-propelled guns. The vehicle was an immediate success, the relative abundance of it's ammunition coupled with it being the first example of it's type to re-emerge made the Jaguar IIIa very popular with the troops and similiar sorts of vehicle were soon fielded by nearly every combatant.
