The "Beagle"
a barque rigged privateer in the  service of the crown

Attached are a few sketches of the barque kite, the Beagle.

Maindeck
Mounted forward is the 4" (short) gun (1), ammunition is passed up the from the magazine below through a nearby hatch (not shown) and forward of this is the hatch to the rope locker. Further aft is a stairway guarded by a companion (small cabin, 2) leading to the gallery and forward crew accomodation. Beyond are the sponsons (3), each with a 24 pounder long cannon and it's own magazine below. Behind is the poop crowded with two more 24 pounder long cannons (4) and two Nordenfeldt five-barrelled machineguns (5) Note that the machineguns do not have thier own armoury, ammunition being run up from the armoury on the deck below. In the very centre of the kite is the helmsmans station (6), the compass and wheel is here as well as the ships bell. Further complicating the poop deck is the companion to the aft crew accomodation (7) and the two skylights illuminating the great cabin below. The rail is of heavy wood built in a frame in which their crew stack their folded hammocks to lessen injuries from wood splinters and ball during combat, they are generally covered by red canvas covers known as "quarter-clothes." The walkways to the two gun sponsons are actually ramps sloping away from the deck, the sponson gun-decks are level with the deck below.

Deck 1, Crew Accommodation
Forward is the Rope Locker (1) which is only accessible from, immediately aft of this is the Forward Magazine (2) for the forward 4" gun and lit from heavy sealed glass windows set high in the aft wall in which lanterns are set. (3) is the Martian Galley, known to the European crew as "The Pepper Caboose." The Martain Crew Quarters (4) is the home of the Martian deck crew and topmen, (in reality the same job just different watches.) opposite this is the Martian Mess (5), the Bosun's Cabin (6) opens onto his charges accomodation so he may be readily accessible. (7) and (8) are the companionways leading down to the Passengers Quarters and up to the Maindeck respectively.
The Gallery (9) is three yards wide and runs between the focs'le and the aft accomodation, along the gallery is a row of liftable shutters that can be raised to allow the circulation of air but during combat these shutters are dogged shut from within. The Armoury (10) which holds fifty cutlasses and the ammunition for the Nordenfeldt machineguns and the Weapons Locker (11) holding fifty Lee-Metford rifles and their equipment are off the Gallery, only the officer's have keys for them and a marine always stands guard in front of each door.
Looking out through the gallery shutters or through a scuttle on this deck the Sponson Gun-Decks (12) can be seen level with the observer.
Aft there is the poop 24 pounder cannon's Magazines (13), these are lit in a similiar fashion to the Forward Magazine to eliminate any chance of accidental explosions. Next to them is the Trimsman and Signallers Cabin (14) and the Quartermaster and Master Gunner's cabin (15), all of who mess in the Petty Officer's Mess (17). (16) is the double stair leading up onto the Maindeck and down to the Officer's Quarters. The Gunner's Quarters (18) and the Gunner's Mess (19) are on the starboard side, the "Tars" (Sailors) are none too pleased about having "Pongos" (soldiers) messing with them. A similiar situation is occuring on the portside, where the "Jollies" (marines) have to put up with the "Horse-Pongos" (Cavalrymen) in their Marines Quarters (20) and Marines Mess (21) but it has shown itself as only a good natured rivalry. Seperating the messes is the Crew Galley (22).
