Never Too Old To Play Truant
Part One
June and Jim were sitting in front of the TV on the couch cuddled up to one another. They had been married 2 weeks and had just come back from their honeymoon. This was their last night before they had to go back to work as Mr and Mrs Carver.

I cant believe weve been married 2 weeks, June said as she zapped through the channels and saw that A Wedding Story was on.
Its so weird being Mrs Carver. I thought I would stay June Ackland for the rest of my life. Mind you I didnt exactly expect to lose my spleen in order for you to propose, she laughed.

It doesnt matter how we got in this position. As long as its not a dream, Jim replied.

June got up, turned around to face Jim and kissed him.

What was that for?

If you know what just happened, then its not a dream! June told him laughing.

Jim looked at her lovingly and kissed her again. Nope, not a dream he said as he let out a giggle. That was too good to be a dream. I love you Sgt. Carver.

Aaahh. I need to get used to that quick. If everyone is going to call me Sgt Carver we might get a bit mixed up having two in the same nick.

Well Im not planning on transferring, thats for sure.

Me neither. Come on, bedtime, June said as she pulled Jim off of the couch and put the TV off. I think Ill have a shower first, she continued as she winked to her new husband.

You getting at something? Jim asked. He too couldnt believe that after 1 years he had finally managed to get the woman he had always loved ever since his first puppy walk with her in 1983. Oh, come on then. Ill warm up the bed while you go and have a shower!

Jim carried June upstairs and they both fell onto the bed laughing and kissing totally forgetting about the shower.

The next morning June got up before Jim and went downstairs to make the breakfast. Toto wandered in through the cat flap and meowed.

Oh, hello Toto. Where have you been all night? Just a minute and Ill get you some milk.

June went to the fridge, got some milk and poured some into Totos bowl. As she was looking in the fridge for the butter someone tapped her on the shoulder. She jumped and then realised that it was only Jim up to his old tricks again.

What was that for? You nearly made me jump through the ceiling, she shouted at him.

Sorry, whats wrong with you this morning? Youre not usually that grumpy in the morning.

Im sorry too. I shouldnt have shouted. I suppose Im just worried about what everyone will say when we go back to work. Its stupid really.

Jim looked at June and smiled. Oh come here, he said giving her a hug. Were married, theres no reason for you, or me even, to be embarrassed about anything. We havent done anything wrong.

Youre right. I suppose I was just worried after what happened last time we went public. They were talking about us behind our backs. June walked into the living room and sat down, Jim kneeled down in front of her.

Theres something else bothering you isnt there? Jim asked her. June? Just tell me please, he said as he sat down next to her and took her hand.

I had a phone call early this morning, she said as tears ran down her cheeks.

Who was it? Anyone we know? Jim was very concerned by this time as June was crying her eyes out. June? If anyones done something to hurt you

No, No Jim, nothing like that. It was the doctor. HeheIm she stuttered. Im

Its ok. Weve got all the time in the world. Work can wait. Ill phone in and tell them well be late.

Jim got up and reached for the phone. As he was dialling Insp. Golds number, June whispered something to him. He put the phone down again and walked over to her with a big grin on his face.

YouYou mean were Jim also started crying and began stuttering as bad as June. Wow, this is great. I dont know what to say.

Well thats a first! June laughed the first time that morning. Yes, Jim. ImWere having a baby. Oh I never thought Id ever say that.

Im going to be a dad? he pulled June up from the couch and gave her a huge hug. They both broke out in tears and stood there for at least 10 minutes until June realised what time it was.

Jim?

What?

We should have been at work over two hours ago. Insp. Gold will kill us.

Forget that. Lets just play truant, he said laughing.

Jim. Youre not at school anymore. You play truant in school, not at work! June also started laughing. Oh, who cares? One extra day off wont harm us.

Are you a sergeant or a school girl? Youre meant to be the one telling me to go to work, not stay at home!

Jim, as long as Im with you, I dont care who is a sergeant and who isnt! Because I love you and thats all that matters.

I love you too hon. Now, where should we go for the day then? How about a day at the beach?

Sounds good to me. Just let me get changed out of uniform and Ill be right there. Wont take long.

Na, just a couple of hours, Jim whispered under his breath.

Oi, watch it PC Carver, I heard that. And if you repeat it again, Ill report you to the inspector!

Yes, miss! Jim said following June upstairs to change into something more comfy.
